Good, but lack of drawstring big misstep

I've owned 3-4 pairs of the previous version (Stretch Wavefarer Walk Shorts?) and absolutely loved them. Best shorts on the market. Ordered two pairs of these new versions from another online retailer, and they are generally just as good. Great for everything from dinners out with a polo shirt to hiking to swimming. BUT...why in the world Patagonia got rid of the internal drawstring is perplexing. Essentially requires the use of a nylon belt now for anything less than super casual, around-the-house wear, and can no longer easily use these as swim trunks. Big disappointment. I guess I'll keep these two new pairs, but definitely a downgrade from the previous version.

Light, stylish

Absolutely no regrets. I have become an enthusiastic Patagonia fan based on the stylishness, quality of the products, and social awareness. In my books, their products are considered as "Top Shelf" stuff. These shorts will be great for summer wear.Binary opinion to recommend? Certainly a YES.

Lighter than expected, maybe not for me.

For the right situations, these shorts are great. They are incredibly lightweight (think sun shirt fabric) so I'm sure that they dry quickly and travel well. The trade off is that they are relatively unstructured and don't seem very durable. I do a lot of wet wading and then might stop somewhere for lunch afterward, so I bought them for those types of days hoping that they could also be for daily wear. For my preference, they are good for the former, but too lightweight for the latter, if that makes sense.

Lightweight, versatile shorts!
17 August 2022

These are some of my favourite shorts to wear in hot weather. I've spent a lot of time travelling through Southeast Asia with a minimal wardrobe, and this style of short is extremely comfortable, cooling, and versatile. The stretchiness is good for many activities for all day. The fact you can also swim in them is a huge bonus. They are lightweight and don't take up much space in a bag.I've worn this style of short from Patagonia for many years. The only problem is I wear them so much that they eventually wear out! I'd recommend having a second pair. Perhaps a hemp pair which may be more durable. The fabric is lightweight, which also means it's more risk of getting snagged and torn. Love the Fit and Feel but Ripped on first wear!
11 April 2023

I bought these to class up my act on summery days and was excited to try them out right after purchase on a vacation to Mexico.Fit perfectly with great stretch when on the move. I prefer a snug fit with enough play in the fabric to not pinch if the situation calls for action. The waist fit firm but not overly tight. I could wear with or without a belt. Plenary of room in my pockets for phone and wallet without being too baggy or too tight to the thigh. Love the fit.Wore all day with no problem. They were light and airy. Temps were 80F and humid. Shorts were breathable and comfortable all day.Unfortunately the same fabric that was light and breathable ended up ripping the first time I sat down for the night on a chair. Right in the seat! So now my shorts that were my so called dressy shorts have a big embarrassing hole. I could stitch them but then they cant be used any where but for fun activities. Bummer! But I will still wear these, just not as intended.

No zipper?
28 February 2024

As shorts they are fine, lightweight and stretchy however go for a spontaneous dip and your hotel card key even with the back pocket buttoned has a good chance of swimming off along with any cash that might be stored there as well. Front pockets are nice and big for storing sand. So yes, great summer short for those hot humid days when your going commando but please add a zipper on one of the back pockets. Would get 4-stars for an extra inch as at 19 inches exposed knobby knees went out of fashion with knee high socks.

Shorts good for city walking or swimming...
20 June 2023

I wear these shots often on long walks in the city (Seattle, primarily). By long walks, I mean walks of 13K steps or about 6 miles. I'll likely wear them on summer hikes to Rainier and the North Cascades as well. They have a slightly stretchy fabric which I like. Plenty of pockets as well. For me a size 36 fits just about right for a 6-foot / 180 lb frame. The length is about perfect not too short (most important to me); nor too long. My older pair had a drawstring around the waist which I liked; frankly, I haven't opened the new pair, so I don't know if that remains. The finish is flat, not shiny. Flat is what I like. I don't swim much any longer but if I did, they could be used to swim in, especially if you were wearing a pair of quick-dry undies underneath.I ... MoreI wear these shots often on long walks in the city (Seattle, primarily). Watch out. These stain really really easily
26 July 2024

I bought a pair in April. Lived in them a bit, went outside with them, went camping. Now they look horrible because anything oily that every touched them has left a permanent stain. This is not normal. I am 41 and from FL. I have worn many pairs of shorts from many brands and probably spilled some food on all of them. None have every been completely covered in stains like this. And after just 2mos. Patagonia tries to make clothes that will really last for a long time. They may want to discontinue this fabric.

World Travel Essential
28 March 2024

I am currently on a solo world tour that as of today lasted 11.75 months I own five pairs of the shorts. I brought four pair of the shorts on my trip with me. I sent one pair home because of weight saving and wear three pairs in my daily rotation, the shorts are lightweight and extremely easy to care for, I have washed them in sinks and showers and buckets all across the world and they clean really easily and dry quickly. They have a nice finish and are very comfortable to wear. They can pass for dress shorts when necessary but perform on tarmac or trail. I highly recommend this product to anyone doing extend travel or weekend getaways as their versatility make them a travel essential.

a favorite shorts...
22 August 2024

My favorite pair of walking shorts. And work shorts. And hanging out in the city shorts. I walk, on average 12-13 miles per day, not counting the steps I take when not taking purposeful walks. The shorts are comfortable the whole walk. Ample pockets for storing a phone; house keys; wallet, and yellow bandana (nose blowing). I like the stretchy fabric.I do agree with another reviewer who mentioned they missed the drawstring on the newer versions. I haven't tried this, but I suspect with quick-dry underwear as a base layer, you could walk right into water with these and take a swim. I'd suspect they'd dry out quickly. This is where the drawstrings would help. A belt might inhibit this spontaneity. I wish they'd bring the drawstrings. back. I sometimes wear a belt but ... MoreMy favorite pair of walking shorts. I also wished Patagonia would make a full-leg pant version based on these, with set inseams (i.e. 30; 32; etc). For the record: I'm 6'0 and 175 lbs. My weight varies between 172-180 and size 36 work great. A little loose at the low end; about right at the high.
