This will be a lengthy review from my specific use case after purchasing three pairs of 2021 Baggies. I realize these are different from the 2022 Baggies in terms of materials, but I feel as though this is a necessary review because the design of the new Baggies looks similar or identical to the older generation. This is my use case and following review.I am a 21-year-old college student in Arizona, and I purchased three pairs of Patagonia Baggies in the late spring/early summer of 2021 to be my do-it-all shorts for year-round use here in Arizona. I weighed around 170 lbs. at a height of 6'2" at the time. I purchased the Baggies after reading many reviews about the durability and the legendary lifespan of the all-nylon construction. I got to college and started wearing the Baggies to class, the pool, social events, hiking, and filming short films in the desert around Phoenix. These Baggies came to the gym with me off and on as well. I wore these shorts all the time, and I generally wore the Baggies with your normal everyday carry items: my phone, wallet, and car keys. Below are details about the Baggies I purchased.Fire Red:This pair of baggies has held up the best out of the three, maybe because I don't wear them as much. I don't have many shirts to go with them, so they tend to be on the back burner compared to the other two colors. I've taken this pair with me on hikes and a couple fly-fishing day trips. Overall, this pair held up great and is still holding up to my expectations.Stone Blue:This pair has the most versatility to me because of the color, so I think I might have worn these the most overall. And honestly, they've held up well. Again, this pair has been to the gym numerous times, hiking and camping trips, etc. I learned to skateboard this year and they've even held up against a few decently hard crashes where my thighs are bruised and cut but the Baggies are fine. However, the stitching around the pockets is where I find Baggies have fallen short for me, and it's disappointing to see in these shorts. The blue Baggies aren't the worst offender, but Ill explain. Since Baggies are made so minimally, there isn't much stitching on the shorts overall. That means that if a single piece of stitching comes loose, it could cost the functionality of your Baggies. For the blue shorts, the stitching on the left pocket at the base of the shorts came loose and unraveled in a small 2-inch section around the drainage mesh. This is a problem when carrying things in the shorts like keys, because any item small enough will fall out of the shorts. I understand some people may be able to stitch the section back together and fix the issue, but I'm in college and cant easily repair myself, nor will Patagonia accept a repair for men's Baggies because the liner qualifies Baggies as undergarments and makes them un-repairable for obvious reasons. So, until I can replace the weak stitching, I'll have to make sure nothing small or valuable ever goes in my left pocket, including my car keys. Kind of un-ideal for normal use.Mango:These were by far my favorite pair of Baggies because of the color. I wore these probably 3/4 as much as the Stone Blue flavor, and they looked great and worked well. You could really keep track of me in a crowd when wearing them. Again, I did nothing in these Baggies that I didn't do in the others. However, I was in the gym one night and looked down at my Baggies to realize that the stitching on the inside of the right pocket was missing in a 3-inch section. I had no indication of a tear or a cut on the shorts, nor any event that I had thought would have caused the stitching to break. I didn't think much of the missing stitching, as it was the first time it had happened on any of my Baggies, until my phone fell out of my right pocket a few days later. Again, one line of stitching with no reinforcement on the pockets makes a big weak point in design. I kept wearing these Baggies carefully until another skateboard crash ended their life, tearing holes into the pockets around the base and destroying the stitching at the leg opening on the right side of the shorts. RIP Mango Baggies. I didn't expect the Baggies to survive that, but the Stone Blue ones had in the past.Verdict:For the overall advertised uses of Patagonia Baggies, the stitching and lack of reinforcement or repairability (around the pockets specifically) really makes me question the design of the shorts. I am disappointed with the durability after reading so many reviews online claiming 5+ years of constant use. That being said, I thoroughly enjoy the functionality of the shorts. While mine lasted, they were excellent and I will probably buy more pairs in the future. I hope that this review can shed some light on the product after months of constant use and abuse for a very specific case of wear and tear.

I purchased two pairs of the 5" Baggie Shorts. As a runner and swimmer I was super excited to have a do it all short for the summer. I tried on the Dark Ash color and went for a quick dip in my local pool to see how they worked when wet. As soon as I got out they were a washed out grey!! (I believe the standard grey color you can buy these as). The chlorine levels of this pool aren't very high (my girlfriends new suit was totally fine) Lesson learned, but I was hoping to be sent a new pair from Patagonia. I was told that I would need to return my current pair to be recycled for a new pair would be sent. I appreciate the material recyclability, but it would be more environmentally friendly to not have to ship two pairs of shorts instead of one and just be more ... MoreI purchased two pairs of the 5" Baggie Shorts. Would help if Patagonia disclosed how sensitive the dye can be.

I bought two pairs of Patagonia baggies (5 inches). I used the blue ones in a pool 5-6 times (hand washed them each time after that). They are completely faded, look stained. They don't look like the same product anymore. They also lo longer dry fast. They're unusable from both a "looks" perspective (look like garbage now) and from a usability perspective (they don't serve the purpose of being swim trunks anymore). When I first got them, they looked great and dried fairly quickly. The other pair (orange) faded somewhat after one use in the pool so I stopped wearing them altogether. I suspect they would turn into white shorts after a few swims as well. I've never seen this in my life for any piece of clothing, and certainly didn't expect it from $80 shorts. ... MoreI bought two pairs of Patagonia baggies (5 inches). Shorts are made with great fabric and feel right when its scorching hot. Liner is also 5/5 solid for what its meant to do. Popped the top stitch on the pockets in both pairs I bought pretty quickly, odd considering the pocket design. The pockets are angled as such that it requires you to put your whole hand in it to retrieve items; or push them out through the bottom of the hem. So far a minor gripe as it hasnt had a domino effect yet on the other stitches. I do like the pocket design regardless of my sniveling about the narrowness, with the depth its easy to keep things in place while running.Sumac Red is 100% coral pink, big big color difference with whats shown online and whats delivered.Overall these shorts are pretty true to the brand and are very livable for ... MoreShorts are made with great fabric and feel right when its scorching hot. Patagonia Baggies are a great product, one whose designers continue to thoughtfully evolve. I have been wearing them since the mid-80s.They are comfortable, with wide cut legs for climbing and hiking. They are made of durable fabric that withstands the coarseness of stone and the downright scratchiness of the briar patch. They are available in fun, jazzy colors (happily that Patagonia changes each year) as well as the more formal black and grey. To certain eyes, Baggies are stylish. The mesh liner is great - underwear be gone! The oh-so-deep pickets are utterly functional - the iPhone fits very well, sideways, into the rear pocket, and a respectful nod to the right front pocket key loop.A hearty Thank You to Patagonia for crafting the Baggies! I bought the Patagonia Men's shorts because I wanted a durable pair of workout shorts. Mainly to squat and lunge with. The shorts seem to be made well, and the material feels good and sturdy. However, as you squat, the shorts slide down. If you have a cell phone in your pocket, they kinda slide down. When you're active, they slide down and don't stay on in tact. You might say I got a size too big, I originally bought a medium and the problem was worse. I love Patagonia as a company, love their shirts. But, I called and asked which shorts I should get for lifting and they suggested these. I'm disappointed. While these might work for someone else that's not as active, maybe great for walking shorts, for me, they don't work so well. I don't like to leave a bad review for Patagonia since I do really like the company, but, after getting emails about my feedback, I thought this would help improve the quality of the shorts going forward.
I am 5'10" 165lbs with a somewhat muscular lower body and a 30in waist. I got these in a medium and they fit well for an outdoor pair of shorts but the drawstring must be tied or the waist even with the elastic is too large. The liner is supportive enough for wear in and out of the water and plenty breathable. Wearing underwear with the liner still in them they feel slightly more restrictive for me, but I have not removed the liner yet because I like to have them as water shorts also. They are baggy and not very restrictive, but they are less baggy and more restrictive than older baggies that I have. They are a good length, just long enough to be worn under a climbing harness but can get pulled into the leg loops sometimes. Definitely longer than older 5" baggies ... MoreI am 5'10" 165lbs with a somewhat muscular lower body and a 30in waist. They are a good length, just long enough to be worn under a climbing harness but can get pulled into the leg loops sometimes. Definitely longer than older 5" baggies that I have which I prefer not to climb in. They are great shorts and look great hiking, climbing or for casual wear, however, they are not the same as older model baggies I own... The waist is much larger, the material is thicker, and they are not as baggy making them feel more restrictive. I have a few pairs of older models of unknown year in a size large and medium that are much more generously cut and the waist is more elastic even after 5+ years of use. The current models in a size large have far too large of a waist, even with the drawstring, to justify the more generous cut. I am sure there are reasons for these changes such as using recycled materials, sizing issues others have had, or other sustainability reasons regarding material choice. The old baggies are a goldilocks short for me with a small waist and large legs and I will continue to buy previous models used over new when available.
Part of what I love about these shorts is how simple they are as well as how they are so environmentally friendly.Elastic waist with drawstring is solid. Material could be more lightweight and breathable but feels absolutely indestructable and I know these will last a long time and serve me well. Rear pocket with button is solid. My least favorite part about these shorts by far would be the gigantic two side pockets. They are way too big and they are a nuisance because anything phone-sized or smaller falls all the way down and is tricky to get out. If these shorts had pockets that were a bit smaller they would be an 11/10!

I am a 21-year-old college student in Arizona, and I purchased three pairs of Patagonia Baggies in the late spring/early summer of 2021 to be my do-it-all shorts for year-round use here in Arizona. I weighed around 170 lbs. at a height of 6'2" at the time. I purchased the Baggies after reading many rave reviews about the durability and the legendary lifespan of the all-nylon construction. Buying three pairs of baggies was also a sizable investment for a college student to put towards one brand of clothing. I began wearing the Baggies consistently during the fall after I arrived at school. I arrived at school and started wearing the Baggies to class, the pool, social events, hiking, and filming student short films in the desert surrounding Phoenix. These Baggies came to the gym with me off and on as well. I wore these shorts all the time and cycled through them, washing them after sweating in them for a day in the Phoenix heat. I generally wore the baggies with your normal everyday carry items: my phone, fabric wallet and car keys. They looked great, went with outfits, and I did get compliments here and there on the colors and style of the Baggies overall. Now I'll talk about the separate pairs, where I begin the meat of my review. Fire Red: This pair of baggies has held up the best out of the three, maybe because I don't wear them as much. I don't have many shirts to go with them, so they tend to be on the back burner compared to the other two colors. I've taken this pair with me on hikes and multiple fly-fishing day trips with my brother. The only complaint I have with this pair is a few black stains that I was not able to remove, but overall, this pair held up great and is still holding up to my expectations. Stone Blue: This pair has the most versatility to me because of the color, so I think I might have worn these the most overall. And honestly, they've held up decently. Again, this pair has been to the gym numerous times, hiking and camping trips, etc. I learned to skateboard this year and they've even held up against a few decently hard crashes where my thighs are bruised and cut but the Baggies are fine. However, the stitching is where I find Baggies have fallen short for me, and it's disappointing to see in expensive shorts. The blue Baggies aren't the worst offender, but hear me out. Since Baggies are made so minimally, there isn't that much stitching on the shorts overall. So that means if a single piece of stitching comes loose and a section of it is lost during your day-to-day, it could cost the functionality of your Baggies. For the blue shorts, the stitching on the left pocket at the base of the shorts came loose and unraveled the bottom of shorts in a small 2-inch section around the drainage mesh. This is a problem when carrying small items in the shorts like keys or rings or bracelets, because any item small enough will fall out of the shorts. And now some people may be able to stitch the section back together and fix the issue, but I'm in college and can't do that myself, nor will Patagonia accept a repair for men's Baggies because the liner qualifies Baggies as undergarments and makes them un-repairable for obvious reasons. So, until I am able to replace the weak stitching, I'll have to make sure nothing small and valuable ever goes in my left pocket, including my car keys. Kind of un-ideal for the price of these shorts. Mango: These were by far my favorite pair of Baggies because of the color, and you can barely find any in a medium size anywhere online today. I wore these probably 3/4 as much as the Stone Blue flavor, and they were a great fashion statement. You could really keep track of me in a crowd when wearing them, and that part was nice. Again, I did nothing in these Baggies that I didn't do in the others. However, I was in the gym one night doing crunches and looked down at my Baggies to realize to my surprise that the stitching on the inside of the right pocket was just gone in a 3-inch section. I had no indication of a tear or a cut on the shorts, nor any event that I had thought would have caused the stitching to break. I didn't think much of the missing stitching, as it was the first time it had happened on any of my Baggies, until my phone fell out of my right pocket a few days later. Again, one line of stitching with no reinforcement makes the Baggie's stitching very weak. I kept wearing these Baggies carefully until another skateboard crash ended their life, tearing holes into the pockets around the base an
Ive been wearing Patagonia Baggies since the mid-1980s. During the summer they are my daily wear. Nothing else has ever come close to the comfort and wearability that Baggies offer. Ive worn them in the winter to hot springs (w/unknown folk) and pools. I wore them on raft trips down the Colorado, Payette, Salmon, Green and Clearwater Rivers. I wore them when I biked from Spokane to Glacier, to Yellowstone to McCall and back to Spokane. There is nothing I have t done in my baggies. Now in my 70s I wear them to do chores and other outdoor activities. They are the absolute best attire for fun and have to do chores.Thank you.Scott Brooks-Miller
