Last year, a 3rd party review said R1 Air offered the best thermoregulation of any fleece on the market, and I would not quibble with that assessment. You will feel comfortable indoors if it's a little chilly and yet - magically - nice and warm down into the 30s outdoors. I guess people use these R1 Air garments for exercise, since they are SO breathable; I live in Northern Florida so I do not have such a situation, so I can't comment. All I can say is: I have R1, R1 Techface and R1 Air in my closet, and this is the BEST iteration of R1 in Patagonia's lineup - full stop. This fleece crew makes an excellent mid layer or is even comfortable as a base layer. The fit is really nice, slim but not tight anywhere (unlike the regular R1 which I find a bit tight in places, even though I’m pretty slim). It seems nice and easy to move in. And the R1 air material is very soft and comfortable - near instant-warmth, but very breathable. And the crater blue colour is quite rich and looks good. This fleece should be excellent for sweaty pursuits in the cold.

Got this for a trip to Japan. Knew the weather was going to swing from really cool to warm and wanted something versatile. I was going to be active so needed something that would be warm but as I trekked I wouldn’t overheat. Not sure how the collar will wear long term. If the wind is really blowing the shirt doesn’t protect much but it doesn’t claim to. I am a medium normally but the fit is a little odd so I went to a large.

I have the hooded jacket version of this piece which i absolutely love for high aerobic output sports like cross-country skiing and fall mountain biking. Happy to report the the crew version is just as good as the jacket. I literally could wear this everyday. I did note that the crew version feels a bit more fitted than the jacket but fortunately the material is pretty stretchy so it isn’t a big deal. Finally, I have gotten quite a few compliments when I worn it around town. Highly recommended!
I got this sweatshirt for a mix of both cool city walking and a base layer for skiing. Definitely feels nicely built and does a great job keeping me warm. It's super lightweight to pack into a bag. It very breathable and wouldn't hold up in wind, however, and I haven't washed it enough to know if it will hold up just fine long term. At 6'3 and 180lbs, a large was a good fit, but even a tad tight.
Patagonia R1 Air fleece has been praised as having the best thermoregulation of ANY fleece on the market; meaning it's comfortable across a wide range of temperatures. The fit of this crewneck is kinda trim. I have one in XL and it fits me very, very well. As the other poster reported, you get lots of compliments on the appearance. But now, I want one of these for just lazying around the house; and maybe tossing on a t-shirt underneath. So I am deliberately going with an XXL; knowing it's going to be loose and "slubby". Heck, you can even sleep in this crewneck, it's THAT cozy.
I wasn’t sure about this but heard a lot of great feedback on the R1 line so decided to get one. This crew neck is sweet because you can just wear it as a shirt and it looks rad. It’s been cold in Squamish the last few days and this has kept me warm and cozy. The medium fits great and i can wear a t-shirt under it with a bit of room. I’m 150lbs and 5’11. Get off your wallet and get one of these. Go enjoy nature, stay warm and hug a tree.
Got this for backpacking and it's been a great addition to my pack. Very light for the amount of warmth it provides, had this along with a capilene cool trail long sleeve and I would probably be comfortable sitting down to around 55F or so. If you're moving I think it would be overkill in anything over 30-40F.Super soft and comfy too. Chest pocket is nice for a small swiss army knife or something, but I wouldn't put anything over a few ounces in there. Fit is pretty slim but not as slim as I was expecting based on other reviews. I'm 5'11'' 170 lbs and the medium fits well. I can fit a base layer under it but not much else.
My second favorite piece - only after the zip-neck version of the same thing. I ordered both with the intentions of returning one but I liked them both so much that I kept them both.This is always in my bag for ski trips. I'll wear it all day under my ski shell, and keep it on for apres skis / dinner that night. Great technical piece and looks great wearing casually too. I would wear it even more often but I often refrain unless i really think I NEED it in order to make it last longer (i.e. if I'm going for an easy local hike I may through on a cheaper piece). That 's the only thing - I'm not sure how many years I will get out of this. Time will tell!
Patagonia R1 sweater, great purchase. I thought it ran a tad bit small when compared to Synchilla sweater. Sweater is super warm and great for hiking or even just wearing around the house.
