I deliberately got the new Salt color one size larger than usual for 3 reasons: First, it's a trim fit, but I wanted it a little floppy for just slubbing around. Second, I wanted to be able to toss it in over a t-shirt. Third, i wanted to use it as an outer-grament, not a base layer. The Salt color with Yellow trim is a nice, casual scheme for Summer; and in real life, it's FAR more attractive than in the pictures here. I fully intend to get this garment in a darker color for the Fall & Winter. It's cozy across a wide range of temperatures; and you can even sleep in it - "been there/done that" LOL.

58 141. Small in all Patagonia items. The R1air is heavier and warmer than the wool/capilene regular air. It breaths well for its weight but its not as breathable as the regular air. It does block more wind than the regular air. It is looser and has more of a sweater fit than baselayer fit, I prefer the looser fit as it does not ride up on you, It is not so loose that it bunches up under my pack straps.I can tuck it in or leave it untucked. Its very comfortable next to skin. I dont feel any seams or extra material.I have not worn it 5 days in a row, so the stink factor has yet to be tested, The regular air can go weeks without smelling,My only concern is that it does not stretch a ton and this might be a long term issue with durability at the seams. I have 3 other R1 Air pieces, the Full Zip Hoody and 2 Half Zip Pullovers; and wanted at least one of these for the cusp between indoors & outdoors. Last year, a 3rd party review said R1 Air offered the best thermoregulation of any fleece on the market, and I would not quibble with that assessment. You will feel comfortable indoors if it's a little chilly and yet - magically - nice and warm down into the 30s outdoors. I guess people use these R1 Air garments for exercise, since they are SO breathable; I live in Northern Florida so I do not have such a situation, so I can't comment. All I can say is: I have R1, R1 Techface and R1 Air in my closet, and this is the BEST iteration of R1 in Patagonia's lineup - full stop. Be forewarned: if you get one R1 Air, it won't be ... MoreI have 3 other R1 Air pieces, the Full Zip Hoody and 2 Half Zip Pullovers; and wanted at least one of these for the cusp between indoors & outdoors. I was looking for a fleece layer that was warmer than mid weight, was light and warm with no zipper or collar. Warmth to weight is great, hence the name Air. No collar or zipper stacking when layering. Small functional L breast zippered pocket. Other reviews said runs small so I sized up to XL for wearing over another layer. That worked out good for me at 195 lbs with decent shoulders and chest. Used it skiing under a hard shell, fishing with an SST, on the airplane and just lounging. Not excited about the contrasting pocket colors, so I got black which is my go to anyway. Very happy
Patagonia R1 Air fleece has been praised as having the best thermoregulation of ANY fleece on the market; meaning it's comfortable across a wide range of temperatures. The fit of this crewneck is kinda trim. I have one in XL and it fits me very, very well. As the other poster reported, you get lots of compliments on the appearance. But now, I want one of these for just lazying around the house; and maybe tossing on a t-shirt underneath. So I am deliberately going with an XXL; knowing it's going to be loose and "slubby". Heck, you can even sleep in this crewneck, it's THAT cozy.
My second favorite piece - only after the zip-neck version of the same thing. I ordered both with the intentions of returning one but I liked them both so much that I kept them both. This is always in my bag for ski trips. I'll wear it all day under my ski shell, and keep it on for apres skis / dinner that night. Great technical piece and looks great wearing casually too. I would wear it even more often but I often refrain unless i really think I NEED it in order to make it last longer (i.e. if I'm going for an easy local hike I may through on a cheaper piece). That 's the only thing - I'm not sure how many years I will get out of this. Time will tell!
Ordered a size up for hubs who has a dad bod physique; that was the correct choice for both comfort and layering. He has worn it several times for outdoor cold weather work like shoveling/snow blowing in comfort in the North as well as casual/work wear and gotten many compliments on it. He was very pleased with the length in both the body and sleeves which tend to be trouble spots for him given his long torso and ape arms.If you're more slender, I would suggesting ordering your usual size.
The issue I have with this product is it does not stretch much at all. Since I am between sizes I had to get a large to fit over my belly and because the material doesn't stretch. It is too baggy to make a good mid layer with my other layers so the material bunches. If you are looking for a mid layer look at the R1 and R2 Techface. I just got the R2 Techface and it nails the technical fleece mid layer role. A medium also fits me perfectly. The R1 Air is super comfortable and wears like a sweater. For this I like it. The material is warm and breathable and also fashionable. With a pair of jeans it hits smart casual perfectly.Product request: Patagonia, if you're reading this, make an R1 Air tech full zip jacket without a hood, but use stretch panels on the flanks. ... MoreThe issue I have with this product is it does not stretch much at all. You guys used to make a shaggy R1 like this. The stretch panels would allow for a more trim fit and unrestricted movement. It would breath really well and make a great mid layer. Don't put any pockets on it at all, so it can breath as well as possible. We need more super breathable and warm mid layers. I love Polartec Alpha, but it is not very durable. We need more options like this. and we don't pockets on top of pockets. Sometimes I end up with around 20 pockets when I am all layered up. If you end up making it you should send me one for free and if you're listening I have several product ideas. I used to work for Bomber Gear and I love design.
When I got this I didn't really think it was going to be warm, but I was very happy to see that I was wrong. The R1 is one of the warmest pieces of clothing I have, I love that I can just wear it as is or layer something over it. I have used it or everyday use, hiking, and working out and the holds up very well. If you are a muscular person, the R1 will accentuate your muscle which is pretty rad. My only knit pick is that the front pocket not that great due to its small size, but its better than nothing!
Im 6 foot and athletic build (garage CrossFit non-Kool aide guy here) & surf build. I had an issue initially with the original M fitting tight around shoulders and upper arms. But I exchanged for another M that fit perfectly (weird) and was able to fit a t-shirt comfortably underneath. Its working well for Socal and gets toasty when hiking in 50s. Its a dope purchase. Also have the hoodie but tha one fit excellently in M
