This is a great midlayer. I have two and they're both in heavy rotation from fall to spring. Shines as a midlayer skiing or mountain/fat biking as well as a casual wear. I'm a ski patroller and it keeps me warm when I need it to and also sheds heat after a call. Breathes yet insulates like a fleece twice its weight. The fit is true to size; be aware that it's more on the trim side rather than loose. Zips work well and sleeves are a perfect length. I'm a huge fan of two tone color schemes and encourage Patagonia to include more of these in future offerings. Highly recommended.

Exactly as all other reviews go, this is a phenomenal fleece for activewear. It is incredibly good at temperature regulating. I feel comfortable inside a warm house and outside on a 10 degree day (or maybe I’m just used to Winter? Who knows). It has better wind resistance than I anticipated, but it’s still not designed for any resistance.Runs slightly tighter than standard clothing (as they designed). I’m a male 5’-8”, 160 lbs with wide shoulders and the M fits me. Runs slightly tight in the shoulder area but it’s flexible material makes me not care. I wouldn’t want to upgrade to L.

I purchased this pullover for early morning hikes. I'm in Arizona and it's in the 40's in the morning right now. A bit too chilly for just a performance t-shirt. That's where this pullover works perfectly. But where it REALLY shines is its moisture wicking capability. I sweat like crazy and this does an amazzzzing job at keeping me warm AND dry. Patagonia knocked this one outta the park. Not exactly inexpensive as far as pullovers are concerned, but well worth its weight. Highly recommended!

I was excited to upgrade from the original R1 grid fleece to the R1 Air. After a few months of use I wished I repurchased the original. My main complaint, The R1 Air is tight and inflexible.I used to enjoy wearing my R1 for casual use but the fabric of the R1 Air is tight and doesn't stretch like the original. I find myself grabbing other layers over this fleece and I am disappointed.Other than that, it does serve well as a midweight layer when pair with a shell. For skiing and winter sports it will work, but on it's own for climbing, I have found that it doesn't move like the original.
There was a lot of time spent researching which layer and brand to go with for a layer top like this and the R1 Air 1/2 zip fleece has totally exceeded any and all expectations. I don't think my wife has seen me around the house, or running errands, without it on. I bought this to complete my kit for sport climbing this season and I didn't take it off the entire weekend on a recent trip to New Jack City and wear it to the climbing gym every night. The close, athletic fit was precisely what I was looking for to put over a shirt and under a light puff jacket. It is well insulated, but breathes too. The half zip lets you dump heat and the high neck keeps you snug and warm on a route when fully zipped up. You will not regret this purchase.
It's not too often I try something on and am blown away by how awesome it is all around, but this is one of those items for me. I love the colors, the materials, the texture, the warmth, the breathe-ability, and the diverse applications. I'm 5'7" 145 lbs and normally wear a small, but I went with the medium and it fits great. I could see getting a small if you were wearing it purely as a base layer (it would be next-to-skin), but I like throwing a t-shirt on under it and wearing it as a casual daily-wear piece. But when I'm exerting a bunch of energy outside, it breathes really well and dumps all the heat. When there's wind, just throw a shell on over it and it's perfect. It's weird to talk about a piece of clothing like this, but it really is that good!
First of all, size up to be comfy. I am 5.9’ with 165lb and first ordered a M. It was snug and I was upset thinking that’s how it should be and didn’t like the product. I returned and order a Large. The moment I put it on it was Wow I love it. Now… the functionality and the tip that is worth money. I’ve been using it with my Arcteryx Atom LT. People of the world! Eureka! I can use it on a windy 32° in NY while everybody around me is using heavy jackets, scarf, hoodie and puffy jackets. I’m sleek, light and amazingly comfortable. Oh with a very thin technical T-shirt as baselayer. I did it two days in a row before writing this review. Thank you REI because I decided to return a smartwool hoodie 250g with almost a year bought and never used. I did it because I decided ... MoreFirst of all, size up to be comfy. I typically love Patagonia products, but this one was a genuine miss for me. My build: 6’2, 185 lbs, chest 41”. Wear a M in all of my other fleeces. They fit comfortably (not tight) over a T. On the advice of others, I bought this one in L. It fits glove tight, uncomfortable and surprising. I would exchange for a larger size to get some breathing room, but then the sleeves would be far too long. Also, while the actual weight (in ounces) of the fleece is indeed lightweight, this is not a light fleece relative to warmth. Far too warm to wear indoors and I don't carry much body fat. Would call it medium and that’s due to the texture of the weave which is like a waffle effect trapping body heat. Too warm for indoors and not what i wanted. I’ll be returning.
The good: yes, its toasty warm. Sizing: as many others have stated, it runs a bit small. I can go with either a medium or large depending on the cut and for this garment, the Large is a good slim fit without being snug on me.Pocket: I can fit an iphone SE 2020 (iphone 6 form factor) into it but its a tight fit and getting it out requires a tighter squeeze through the zipper than seems advisable... but you can do it. Any bigger phone is a no-go.The not-so-good: The zig-zag pattern in the fabric is made by having fleece in that pattern with spaces in between. The 'spaces' are nothing but the fine mesh substrate that the fleece is connected to. Hold it up to the light and you can see through the mesh like gauze. After 3 wearings - the fleece is pilling badly where it ... MoreThe good: yes, its toasty warm. Sizing: as many others have stated, it runs a bit small. After 3 wearings - the fleece is pilling badly where it rubs against itself like the sides of the torso and undersides of the sleeves. It already looks a year old after having it 6 days. I'll be returning it - perhaps the pilling would stop where it is, I don't know, but the fabric design just seems too fragile to last years like most Patagonia products.
I'm confused by the R1 Air and haven't decided the best use or combination for me yet. Patagonia lists it as a baselayer to midlayer. Wearing it as a baselayer, I felt it did not wick sufficiently to be a baselayer. I felt the between areas of the zig-zag weaving where it breathes was fine, but sweat was accumulating at the zig-zag weave so it wasn't wicking sufficiently to wear as a baselayer. One person's breathability is another person's wind penetration, which makes it a cold midlayer without a wind resistant/proof outer layer. Most recently I wore lightweight baselayer, the R1 Air zip neck, and R1 techface on a hike in 18F-20F temp, and felt it was comfortable with exertion. above 20F I had to take off the R1 Air and just wore the lightweight baselayer and R1 ... MoreI'm confused by the R1 Air and haven't decided the best use or combination for me yet. I also tried another hike in same temp range wearing just the R1 Air zip neck under a Nano-Air hoody and that was too warm and the R1 Air zip neck wasn't working well as a base layer. I feel it is on the bulky side for packing. I'm not sure how I will use it given its air permiability/breathability and its packing bulkiness. It's sort of like The North Face's 50/50 line, which I also find perplexing. On one hand its breathable because of the gaps, on the other hand it is cold because of the gaps. Conversely, it can get too warm where there aren't any gaps. Last, I wish there were thumb loops.
