I purchased this jacket to replace an older Triolet. My last one is 3-4 years old and I used it year round in Alaska. Very durable and well made, I loved the old model it is just tattered now. This one appears of the same breed but it seems a little bigger and baggier except between the shoulders. Every time I put my pack on the ground and bend over to reach in it I have restriction and it gets tight. A little frustrating since the jacket seems to be a bit bigger than my last but the last one fit like a dream. Test your jacket in all regards before wearing it outside as I likely can't return this since I wore it out skiing and have to sell it locally. The restriction happened with light base layer and wool mid layer. Even more restriction with a puffy underneath. Bomber Jacket but sizing is off and continues to be Patagonia's issue especially with snow pants. Previous Jacket was XL Triolet and this one is same size but different fit Triolet XL.

Excellent quality, ok fit.

This jacket is 4 stars for fit alone. Otherwise it would be an easy 5 stars for me. And theres a lot of poor reviews about fitment. With that said, I didn't find it to be particularly boxy in the body like some reviewers have stated. I don't know if people buying these jackets are all skinny to an unhealthy degree, but I am not a big guy by any means, only 5'9" 170lbs and the medium is good for me in this area. It's not quite as trim as say an Arcteryx fit, but I still found it to be what I would consider a trim fit. With that said we will get into the cons. It is LONG! Overly long. And I feel like this can contribute to the "boxy fit" many people complain about. As someone who works in law enforcement and needs a good hardshell for training in inclement weather, all the unnecessary length makes it difficult for get this jacket to not get in the way too much while running a duty belt. I know this is kind of a niche problem but I own other jackets that I can just roll and tuck up at the waist to clear my gear without issue. This one has so much excess that it doesn't do that as well. As for the sleeves, again, LONG. Like way long. Why Patagonia? This doesn't bother me as much as the excess length in the body but I still just don't understand the purpose behind this. We just want proportionate sizes! This extra material also adds unnecessary weight and reduces packability, which the jacket doesn't pack up very well as it is.So those are the negatives. Now for the pros. The overall quality of this jacket is excellent despite my fitment complaints. Zipper quality is excellent. Weather resistance is amazing and 3L Goretex does its job. I find the jacket to be extremely comfortable (so long as I'm not wearing my work gear as mentioned above). Face fabric has been durable. Hood works fine for me. It breathes relatively well. It just flat out looks good. It pretty much checks all the boxes of what a high quality hardshell is supposed to do in terms of pure functionality and performance.I also got this jacket at a discount from an online retailer so I feel the value is good for what I paid. If I paid full price+tax I might have gone down to 3 stars for my fitment woes as there should not be so much negative feedback about lack of proper fitment with a $400 jacket that has been on the market for a number of years now so Patagonia has had a lot of time to listen to the end users, get it right, and stick with it. There's really no excuse. But fitment aside the jacket really is fantastic by every other metric.

Comfortable, durable, and cuts the wind like butter. I’ve worn the Triolet from -15C to plus 15 and been comfortable with varying levels of layering. It’s a bit roomy in terms of fit but that accommodates layering and the jacket is long in the sleeves and body to cut out the wind. An excellent purchase (especially on sale) that I expect to be an outdoor mainstay for years to come.

Great jacket, couple of imrovements to be a true 'jack of all things alpine'
13 April 2020

First off, I love the jacket, the pockets, joint articulation, waterproofness (if thats a word), and Id recommend it to anyone, especially because of Patagonia's mission statement.I do however have two issues with the jacket, my last jacket hada second stash pocket on the left breast as well as the right, and I never realised how much I used it till I didnt have one, super useful for everything from gloves, to biners and food. Second, the loop designed to attatch to the pants is way too low on the jacket, meaning the jacket rises up a fair pit before the loop stop it, and I'm 6ft, so not short.I have two other suggestions which I assume were not put in due to weight considerations, but I think both would sincerely add to the jackets 'jack of all things alpine' ... MoreFirst off, I love the jacket, the pockets, joint articulation, waterproofness (if thats a word), and Id recommend it to anyone, especially because of Patagonia's mission statement.I do however have two issues with the jacket, my last jacket hada second stash pocket on the left breast as well as the right, and I never realised how much I used it till I didnt have one, super useful for everything from gloves, to biners and food. Second, I think the jacket should have a removable snowskirt. I'm east coast, so really not vital, but I'd like the option to put one in, and then take it out when I go hiking or climbing

Just bought a second one
29 September 2023

Love this jacket so much I just bought a second one. Surprised by the prior 4/5 star reviews. Run's a little large but I primarily use it as a shell and like to layer based on weather conditions so works great. This is what I wore all ski season last year. The gore-tex is excellent and kept me warm and dry canoeing on an expedition in Northern Maine early spring in the pouring rain. The length is great for skiing and paddling keeping the snow and rain off the back side. My last one was grey'ish blue but I got the yellowish green this time which is a little easier to see / stand out when skiing with a group. Cheers!

Looks great, feels comfy
25 October 2023

I have yet to use it while skiing (hasnt snowed yet). The jacket looks great, fits well and feels comfy. For size reference, the Small fits me well with enough room for layering. I am 5 ft 9 in tall and weight 160 lbs. The only thing lacking is Pockets !! This needs at have least 1 if not 2 inside chest pockets to be able to stash a phone and some cards/cash.

Needed a rain shell
5 March 2021

The Triolet is an amazing jacket! I love it. I bought it because I live in the PNW and needed a shell to keep me dry while out in long days of rain. The triple layer Goretex is perfect and the pocket design and zippers keep me dry while spending long days in heavy rain. The pit zips help regulate my body temp when doing more rigorous activities like hiking, playing in the snow, and on those warmer days.I rated this 4-stars for one reason... the hood is designed for a helmet, therefore is usually very big and loose and difficult to adjust to find the right snugness when I need it more fitted. I realize this isn't a design flaw but is something that doesn't fit my activities. I just wish the hood would fit better around those who don't wear helmets.Otherwise, the ... MoreThe Triolet is an amazing jacket! I love it. I have no regrets. Haven't gotten wet once! Which I cannot say about previous jackets in the rains I endure! The jacket does seem to run a little "big" with extra room to spare, but that doesn't bother me.

Size down!!!
2 September 2023

I received this jacket as an exchange for my older Gore-Tex Pro Pluma shell that no longer offered proper protection from the elements. I was given a new Triolet, at Patagonia Portland, right on the spot. Awesome warranty on these products. However, upon trying this on, in size Medium, I realized this jacket is ABSOLUTELY HUGE compared to my old shell. For reference, I am 5ft 11, 160 pounds. I was told that I cannot have a size that actually fits properly by store staff (a Small in this case), even though its right there in front of me on the store rack, and I tried it on and it fits exactly like the one I returned. I guess I will just donate it, and wear my Mountain Hardwear shell this season, because it fits properly. I can literally fit a down sweater jacket AND a better sweater on underneath this shell and still have room.

The best jacket
9 November 2023

I use this jacket for EVERYTHING! I bought it for skiing. As it turns out, I use it for resort skiing, touring, hiking, climbing, sailing, walking in the rain and pretty much any other reason to pull on a jacket. I like everything about this one. It works well with a thin puffy underneath or a big one one top if needed. Thanks for the great design! - Lars

excellent shell

A great piece in terms of build quality, materials, waterproof/breathable function and looks. I have a few issues: the fabric is quite stiff and has a slightly awkward drape, especially around the neck; despite other review comments about a boxy fit, for my stocky build the jacket seems somewhat overly svelte and " athletic" and presents reduced layering opportunities when compared to my old " Nitro II" shell. Minor criticisms- this is a very fine garment.
