I will admit I bought this jacket on-line and was disappointed when it arrived. First of all the color is the unusual shade of blue that Patagonia seems to favor. Looks like it has some purple in it to me. The boxy cut of the jacket runs large, but would provide more than ample volume for layering. What surprised me the most was the material of the jacket. I have a similar Patagonia jacket made using their H2NO technology. I was hoping this Gore-Tex jacket would be smoother, quieter (less crinkling noises) and more pliant. It isnt. I am confident this three layer Gore-Tex jacket is well made and would be rugged, but I was hoping for the added cost of this jacket compared to its H2NO brother it would have the look and feel of what I will call a traditional Gore-Tex ... MoreI will admit I bought this jacket on-line and was disappointed when it arrived. The fit of the jacket is true to size. I bought a size small and it’s snug. I can also wear two base layers underneath and still zip up the jacket comfortably. In terms of the fabric, the Gortex is waterproof and windproof, and feels like being shielded from the weather despite the jacket being so light and comfortable. I hope the Patagonia letter can be of a brighter colour so it makes better contrast with the jacket. I recommend the jacket to those seeking alternatives to Arcteryx Alpha or Beta AR jacket. One issue or flaw that applied to my case though, is that I ordered through Patagonia’s website, and when the jacket arrived I found it to be used, with smell of cologne. This jacket is 4 stars for fit alone. Otherwise it would be an easy 5 stars for me. And theres a lot of poor reviews about fitment. With that said, I didn't find it to be particularly boxy in the body like some reviewers have stated. I don't know if people buying these jackets are all skinny to an unhealthy degree, but I am not a big guy by any means, only 5'9" 170lbs and the medium is good for me in this area. It's not quite as trim as say an Arcteryx fit, but I still found it to be what I would consider a trim fit. With that said we will get into the cons. It is LONG! Overly long. As someone who works in law enforcement and needs a good hardshell for training in inclement weather, all the unnecessary length makes it difficult for get this jacket to not get in the way too much while running a duty belt. I know this is kind of a niche problem but I own other jackets that I can just roll and tuck up at the waist to clear my gear without issue. This one has so much excess that it doesn't do that as well. As for the sleeves, again, LONG. Like way long. Why Patagonia? This doesn't bother me as much as the excess length in the body but I still just don't understand the purpose behind this. We just want proportionate sizes! This extra material also adds unnecessary weight and reduces packability, which the jacket doesn't pack up very well as it is.So those are the negatives. Now for the pros. The overall quality of this jacket is excellent despite my fitment complaints. Zipper quality is excellent. Weather resistance is amazing and 3L Goretex does its job. I find the jacket to be extremely comfortable (so long as I'm not wearing my work gear as mentioned above). Face fabric has been durable. Hood works fine for me. It breathes relatively well. It just flat out looks good. It pretty much checks all the boxes of what a high quality hardshell is supposed to do in terms of pure functionality and performance.I also got this jacket at a discount from an online retailer so I feel the value is good for what I paid. If I paid full price+tax I might have gone down to 3 stars for my fitment woes as there should not be so much negative feedback about lack of proper fitment with a $400 jacket that has been on the market for a number of years now so Patagonia has had a lot of time to listen to the end users, get it right, and stick with it. There's really no excuse. But fitment aside the jacket really is fantastic by every other metric.

If I lived in a pineapple under the sea, this would be the fit for me. When did things get so square?! In reality, I'm a large long, but to get the necessary length I end up in an XL. Regardless, this is a well conceived layer, but has some short comings beyond its strangely square fit. The material lost waterproofness by the end of season 2. The shoulders and entire left sleeve started seeping water.... quickly. After that the main sipper got caught and lost a tooth. It's a super fine zipper, good for keeping water out, bad for durability. I expect this is a common fail point. The hood and synch clasps are great, the cinches do get weaker and slip over time. The pocket placements are spot on. I do miss the rubber gasket on the cuffs of my previous super alpinist ... MoreIf I lived in a pineapple under the sea, this would be the fit for me. All that to say, I'm on my second one and not really disappointed about it.
Purchased this jacket for hiking in the White Mountains of NH in adverse conditions. So far it has shown itself to be completely water and wind proof. I really like that it has hand pockets, chest pockets, and an interior stash pocket..... things not every jacket has. The jacket is well made and durable and I have no reservations that it will protect me from the elements for years to come. There is a fair amount of room inside to do some layering, as you would expect. I had to knock a star off the rating for two reasons. 1) The cut is a little tight across the back of my shoulders when reaching forward (as you would do scrambling). Not terrible, but not something I feel with my Patagonia Granite Crest jacket. 2) The description claims there is an attachment point in ... MorePurchased this jacket for hiking in the White Mountains of NH in adverse conditions. I was a little hesitant just because of how the reviews were all over the place. I purchased a size small as a like a little bit bigger of a fit to layer underneath. This coat is awesome! It keeps me perfectly warm and it holds up for sure. It is great in the wyoming wind! I plan to use it for skiing as well because it has been amazing for me in the chilly autumn weather. I never want to take it off!! It is a little bit longer than Im used to, but I don't feel like it restricts my movement at all. The jacket is super comfortable, I saw a lot of reviews saying the material was too stiff, but I did not have that problem. I have worn it for a few days, and I think it helped to break it in for sure. I love the color too! Good job Patagonia!!!
Years ago I thought Pacific Trails made awesome jackets. Then I found out about layering and how the various layers work. I got hooked on TAD Gear and owned several jackets from them that I really loved. I had a Stealth Hoodie LT fully taped shell that was the bomb. It was a thicker than average shell with a cool Schoeller membrane, but after years of faithful service, that jacket has failed. Seams are delaminating as is the hood fabric, so time for a new shell. After a lot of research and visits to several retail stores, I settled on the Patagonia Triolet. Im super happy with this shell. The 70D shell is a bit tougher than a lot of shells offered these days, which is good for me as I live a full contact life. Its roomy enough that a light North Face fleece jacket mid layer leaves room for some sort of puffer I haven't needed. The Fleece jacket and Triolet worked well in So Cal Rain storms in the 50s last week. Swapping out the North Face fleece jacket for a heavier TAD Gear fleece hoodie under the shell was still comfortable and didn't Impact flexibility.I really like my Triolet. I wish I could have found one in Black, but mine looks pretty good in Blue.My only complaint is that the material is loud if you are in a quiet environment like a forest. Maybe that will improve as I wear the jacket more and break it in?
As a lifelong P customer and outdoor professional who works outside and shops online the vagueness of sizing and fit with Patagonia products has become increasingly frustrating. In the past, I would find a product that I liked for form, fashion and fit. I would repeatedly purchase the same product and could expect a similar fit. As many P users will note, this is no longer true.Reading reviews describing fit is as misleading as reading the news and determining the truth in daily events. One reviewer is from Fox and describes a jacket as too short in the arms and too baggy in the belly while another is from CNN and describes the jacket as too long in the sleeves, too tight in the belly and unzippable over the neck.A picture is worth a thousand words. One reviewer is from Fox and describes a jacket as too short in the arms and too baggy in the belly while another is from CNN and describes the jacket as too long in the sleeves, too tight in the belly and unzippable over the neck.A picture is worth a thousand words. As the womens lingerie market has discovered, promoting products that are only represented and displayed on the bodies of so called, Angels, creates a customer relationship that is tenuous at best. When females began to steal Vickis Secret and started to market products from real women to real women the effect was instantaneous! The reward for visually displaying the product on diverse models, representing the real customer, was met with obvious success. My passionate plea to P is to visually display the fit of your products on diverse models. The P Team has been inclusive with respect to ethnic diversity in promotional material and is displaying products on models of many colors but unfortunately they are all the same size!!!!!Im not suggesting you fire the 61 , 155lb male model who displays a medium jacket that hangs off nonexistent shoulders.I want to know and see your products visually represented on people like me, my group of professional colleagues and the assorted dirt bags that I am with as we hunt unicorns under the double rainbows.I dont want the P Team to redesign a jacket or pant to fit my hobbit like body but its not too much to ask in 2022 to see some short models, some round models, some tall models, some skinny models.....for Gods sake.....just some real outdoor athletes that represent your customer base. While this change is likely difficult to implement due to some seemingly insurmountable obstacle, I plead with the P Team to create a pathway for your customers to visually understand how your wonderfully crafted goods might look on our bodies prior to purchasing, shipping, inspecting, returning, restocking, refunding, repurchasing, reshipping....and so forth. The manner in which you display your product has the potential to create a better informed consumer that will make more appropriate purchases and that,my friends, will reduce the drudgery and wastefulness of all the returns that occur because customers dont know what to expect!Im no statistician, but the number of clothing reviews that I read that mention an ill fitting garment is astounding. Is there a solution? Probably not a single golden arrow that fixes the fit but you have to believe in incrementalism. Little by little we change for the better or we slip away into the void. Lets put our foot forward and move together towards a better understanding in this relationship that I hope continues well into the future. This is from the heart and I hope it reaches some ears that are listening!Love,The Hobbit
I bought this as my main ski shell to replace an older H2No shell. I don't like powder skirts or need some of the flashier features on dedicated "ski" shells, and this jacket fits the bill for simplicity. The fabric is bomber. The fit is nice and loose in the shoulders for mobility, but trimmer through the waist so it doesn't billow too badly under a pack or harness. The inside mesh pocket easily fits skins, even for the fattest powder skis.I especially appreciate the wide and high collar that doesn't feel constricting when you zip it all the way up over a bunch of layers. My one gripe is with the hood shape. It is cut too specifically for high domed climbing helmets, so the brim doesn't extend far enough forward to fit over a ski helmet. When you cinch the hood down to wear it without a helmet in the rain, the brim is so short that rain drips inside of the collar!Overall, a great jacket that gets a lot of use. The hood is the only thing holding it back from being a much more versatile shell for all kinds of activities in nasty weather.
I'm not a big guy but I have long arms. I bought an XL but didn't like the fit when I extended my arms, way too tight across the back. So I gave that jacket to my son and got myself an XXL. Much more comfortable. I am surprised by how light this jacket is. I wear it skiing but it may even make it into my backpacking gear. The protection it offers for the weight is exceptional. I've already worn it a couple days in California's version of a snow storm: 34 degrees with miserable moisture falling from the sky. I stayed completely dry. The hood might cover a climbing helmet but it doesn't cover my ski helmet, just in case that matters to you. I've never had a ski jacket that didn't have pockets deeper than the zippers. Seems like this would matter in climbing as well. I have already lost a pocket knife. Now I am careful not to unzip the pockets more than a few inches. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding jacket.
