This is an amazing hoody, and I do love it. I wear it for everything in the sun from SUP to climbing, however, be aware, the sizing is not accurate. I am a big person, 6ft 197 lbs. I initially ordered the Xl, it was like a tent. I exchanged it for a L. I have the Men's Capilene Cool Daily Graphic Hoody in L which is an ideal fit, but the large in the tropic hoody was larger. I exchanged the tropic for a M and it is perfect. I do need to praise and thank the outstanding customer service of Patagonia, they were patient with me and exchanged the items without question!!The hoody is wonderful, but just be aware the sizing is way off.

Love this thing. The looser fit and material make it so comfortable and the large buttoned hood and top notch thumb holes provide excellent coverage for mild to moderate days in the sun. That said, this is not something I want for blazing heat or fishing. It is too thick and absorbs water too easily. I prefer the cool daily for those days. For everything else, I'm in this thing. 1 star off because I think it's marketed wrong and it does stain easier than it should. Buy a dark color.

The Men's Tropic Comfort Natural Hoody is good product for sun protection. I now own four of them. The hood is large enough to fit over a bike helmet, and the button fastener for the hood keeps the hood on while riding fast. These are excellent features. I would pay $10 extra for a chest pocket with a zipper, large enough for a larger phone. The Men's Sunshade Technical Hoody from two year ago had this feature. If Patagonia edited this feature to keep the retail under $100 it was a mistake for my preferences. Overall a good product.

The no longer made Sunshade Technical Hoody is essentially the Tropic Comfort Hoody, but with a zipper chest pocket... consider this review interchangeable for both of these products. This is my absolute favorite sun hoody. I have tried and own many others: Capilene Cool Daily Hoody, Black Diamond Alpenglow Hoody, Outdoor Research Echo Sun Hoody, NW Alpine Sun Hoody, etc...The reasons I prefer this hoody over all the others I have tried:* The hood fits well over a simple hat and does not tend to flop back when trail running.* The button can be used to secure the hood over a hat tightly if you are on a ridge line and it is extraordinarily windy so you don't lose the hat.* The chest pocket is perfect for a paper towel tissue, few snack bars, or to hold your watch ... MoreThe no longer made Sunshade Technical Hoody is essentially the Tropic Comfort Hoody, but with a zipper chest pocket... consider this review interchangeable for both of these products. This is my absolute favorite sun hoody. (like long long hikes, trail runs, and multipitch climbs)* The wrists and forearms are loose and not restrictive (BD Alpenglow)I must own 5-6 of the Sunshade Technical Hoodies, so I'm glad I stocked up. I hope Patagonia will re-release it, or something similar in the future... else I'll just get the Tropic Comfort. If its pure cooling performance you want in hot and sunny environments and night time cold weather performance is not part of the goal, the Capilene Cool Daily Hoody is probably what you want instead.I really appreciate that the Patagonia layers all have little sewn in hang loops. A lot of other brands miss this detail. I personally care enough that I will tend to sew on my own hang loops for other brands jackets and sun hoodies when I find that they don't come with them.
Sooo happy with Tropic Comfort Natural! I see some people's review are unhappy with the new version compared to the last, but I think it's fantastic. The fit is perfect - love the longer length, sleeves, and cut. The material is great - it's super soft and stretchy, feels substantial for a touch of warmth yet does the job breathing enough to keep reasonably cool. There are other materials that are thinner and more breathable but this feels & fits amazing. It's become a mainstay for me fly fishing, hiking or just sitting on the beach. Would love to see a version with a zipped chest pocket too!
I never write bad reviews... But I was so excited to see these come back in stock as the previous generation TCH were almost the perfect sunshirt for long fishing days on the water with my clients. I still use my old ones, holes and all.. However the new fabric on these shirts are a steep downgrade, kind of a thicker, cheaper, fake cotton like polyester feel, which I feel I overheated faster while casting big Musky baits all day.. Such a disappointment! Waiting all this time to only see deterioration in product quality from what was, one of my favourite brands.... I ended up returning the 4 I bought and picked up the SIMMS Solarflex Guide shirts. Far superior product in every single way. Team Patagonia, I hope you try again on this one and bring back that quality ... MoreI never write bad reviews... The new "natural" material isn't fit for purpose. It breathes poorly, drys slowly, and is far too fragile for how heavy and bulky it is. Better alternatives are available from other brands.I have one of the old discontinued "Tropic Comfort II" hoodies that I've used for over 5 years and it has been absolutely fantastic. When I saw the new "Tropic Comfort Natural" I bought one immediately so that I'd have a spare, and since I've dropped a size in those 5 years. Unfortunately the new model is a huge disappointment and does not compare favorably to the old one - or to similar sun hoodies made by other clothing brands that I've used - in any way. It's uncomfortably to wear in any temperature above around 20c/70F, whereas I've taken the old model up to 40c/100F without ... MoreThe new "natural" material isn't fit for purpose. Unfortunately the new model is a huge disappointment and does not compare favorably to the old one - or to similar sun hoodies made by other clothing brands that I've used - in any way. It's uncomfortably to wear in any temperature above around 20c/70F, whereas I've taken the old model up to 40c/100F without issue. If it gets wet with sweat, rain, or spray then it will take far too long to dry out. My other outdoor clothes - including my Patagonia pants - will easily dry out overnight, but the TC Natural can stay damp for days. After a few weeks of use it has developed tears around some of the seams, whereas the old model has stood up to years of use with only cosmetic damage. Worst of all, Patagonia don't seem to have made any improvements to the old design. Why on earth does the new model retain the useless button closure rather than using a zipper?I'm not really sure what the designers were thinking, and I'd recommend that anyone considering the TC Natural look elsewhere for a sun hoody.
The material on this item is very soft and comfortable, no complaints there. For me, the issue lies with the hood. I have an older generation of this item and the hood on that one is ample big and fits very well over a baseball hat; it provides excellent coverage of both face and neck, and the hood is a loose fit which is ideal. With this new generation, the hood is kind of tapered - leaving your cheeks and face exposed to the sun (depending where in the sky the sun is). If the old style hood was in play here, this would be 5 stars for me. But in my situation, face and neck coverage is very important.
I typically wears medium or small size, it all depends on the cut, ie. slim, regular or loose fit. Perfect for sunny and hot days of fishing. I bought it because I can put the hood over the ball cap to protect my neck and the sides of my face from the sun. The material could be a tad lighter for those really hot days. The button is useful so that the hood is fitted tighter to the ball cap on windy days. Unlike similar hoodies without button from Patagonia, which I also own, the hoody came off on windy days. Overall great product for fishing.
I've had one of these for several years now, and have worn it practically to death = just kidding! The fabric is a little heavier than Patagonia's Capilene Cool; but it still functions perfectly in sun and heat. I think flats fishermen would especially like it; all fishermen, actually, as a little added protection from rays reflecting off the water. I dinged it one star because when you deploy the button under your chin, the hood hem on either side gaps a little bit. Some people might not exactly like that discrepancy; but it doesn't faze me and doesn't detract from the overall appearance of the garment. In summation, if you want a sun hoody that's a tad "heavier" than Capilene Cool, this one's the ticket!
