Love this thing. The looser fit and material make it so comfortable and the large buttoned hood and top notch thumb holes provide excellent coverage for mild to moderate days in the sun. That said, this is not something I want for blazing heat or fishing. It is too thick and absorbs water too easily. I prefer the cool daily for those days. For everything else, I'm in this thing. 1 star off because I think it's marketed wrong and it does stain easier than it should. Buy a dark color.

The Men's Tropic Comfort Natural Hoody is good product for sun protection. I now own four of them. The hood is large enough to fit over a bike helmet, and the button fastener for the hood keeps the hood on while riding fast. These are excellent features. I would pay $10 extra for a chest pocket with a zipper, large enough for a larger phone. The Men's Sunshade Technical Hoody from two year ago had this feature. If Patagonia edited this feature to keep the retail under $100 it was a mistake for my preferences. Overall a good product.

Got this as a replacement for the tropic comfort II sun hoodie, which I loved and wore very hard for the last four years. Pros: 1) the chest pocket = useful. 2) Fabric feels more durable than the tropic comfort. 3) fit isnt too tight like some other sun hoodies on the market that fit more like muscle shirts. Cons: 1) The hood doesnt fit over a climbing helmet as well as the hood on the tropic comfort did. Please make the hood more compatible for high-profile climbing helmets. (And please bring back the tropic comfort with the extra roomy hood! It fit well with or without a helmet on!) 2) The overall fit of the technical sunshade is fine, but honestly, I preferred the slightly looser and longer fit of the tropic comfort; the tropic comfort had a drapey fit that was ... MoreGot this as a replacement for the tropic comfort II sun hoodie, which I loved and wore very hard for the last four years. Example: on my first day wearing it, I pulled it off from the neck like I would any other shirt, and some of the stitching between the neck and the hood popped. Bummer. Maybe I was too vigorous? I resewed the stitching instead of waiting 2-3 months for a repair. But then after my first day wearing this hoodie as a base layer backcountry skiing, the stitching is frayed, cinched and seems compromised where my avy-beacon shoulder strap was all day. Really??? I have to worry about taking this sun hoodie off extra gingerly and about wearing an avy beacon over its shoulder? I don't mean to sound pedantic, but gives me concerns about the long-term durability. In my tropic comfort, after a season or two of throwing my hands and arms into granite and sandstone cracks, climbing chimneys, and wearing it under heavy backpacks in the summer or winter alpine, etc., yeah I had to resew the stitching a time or two, but only around the wrists as one would expect from climbing. But after my first day climbing and skiing in the technical sunshade, the stitching is already compromised. For a technical sun hoodie, this is kind of disappointing. Please fix--maybe with a stronger thread and a different kind of stitch. The stitching's durability needs to match the durability of the fabric.

I recently bought the sun protection hoodie. I was looking for the sun protection quarter zip, with the high neck, I had bought a year ago. It is no longer offered. Reluctantly, I bought the sun protection hoodie. I have had skin cancer surgery and need sun protection. I was headed to Glacier National Park in July for mountain hiking. I absolutely love my sun protection hoodie. It is cool, comfortable, and the hood provides wonderful sun protection. I only bought one and I wore it everyday for a week (I washed it a few times in the room -- it dries very quickly). The sizing runs large. I knew that from the reviews. I bought a large any way. For my next one, I will likely order down one size. I weigh 170 pounds. One small improvement is, I would like the chest pocket ... MoreI recently bought the sun protection hoodie. The no longer made Sunshade Technical Hoody is essentially the Tropic Comfort Hoody, but with a zipper chest pocket... consider this review interchangeable for both of these products. This is my absolute favorite sun hoody. I have tried and own many others: Capilene Cool Daily Hoody, Black Diamond Alpenglow Hoody, Outdoor Research Echo Sun Hoody, NW Alpine Sun Hoody, etc...The reasons I prefer this hoody over all the others I have tried:* The hood fits well over a simple hat and does not tend to flop back when trail running.* The button can be used to secure the hood over a hat tightly if you are on a ridge line and it is extraordinarily windy so you don't lose the hat.* The chest pocket is perfect for a paper towel tissue, few snack bars, or to hold your watch ... MoreThe no longer made Sunshade Technical Hoody is essentially the Tropic Comfort Hoody, but with a zipper chest pocket... consider this review interchangeable for both of these products. This is my absolute favorite sun hoody. (like long long hikes, trail runs, and multipitch climbs)* The wrists and forearms are loose and not restrictive (BD Alpenglow)I must own 5-6 of the Sunshade Technical Hoodies, so I'm glad I stocked up. I hope Patagonia will re-release it, or something similar in the future... else I'll just get the Tropic Comfort. If its pure cooling performance you want in hot and sunny environments and night time cold weather performance is not part of the goal, the Capilene Cool Daily Hoody is probably what you want instead.I really appreciate that the Patagonia layers all have little sewn in hang loops. A lot of other brands miss this detail. I personally care enough that I will tend to sew on my own hang loops for other brands jackets and sun hoodies when I find that they don't come with them.
I wanted to love this but unfortunately it fell short for me. The fabric is constantly very wrinkly and in my opinion takes a little longer to dry than ideal. The fabric overall is very comfortable and does protect from the sun well. I also admire the sustainable material. The plain aesthetic leaves quite a bit to be desired for the cost (not even a subtle chest logo?) Please bring back the prior gen Capilene Fish Graphic Tropic Hoody!
I was eagerly anticipating the release of this product since the discontinued Tropic Comfort hoody was (and still is) a staple of mine for all kinds of activities. While I’m assuming the new material solves the UPF issue which led to the recall of the Tropic Comfort, it is nowhere near as comfy or light. The new version is heavier and less breathable, shows sweat quickly, and is slow to dry (sweat or water). It also show dirt much more than the previous version and I have found it hard to clean. I was hoping to love this new version and get a couple but so far I’ve been disappointed.
First off, the good. This is a great material for me and will be nice to run and hike in up at 12,000 to 14,000 feet this Summer, and overall provide sun protection and release some heat when I need it. While the button is very hard to initially maneuver into the loop, I think it will stay buttoned forever once in, which is good. The "kinda" bad news is that the color on the website is darker than the actual item, which is only a little bothersome for me. But I did want it darker, like the photo. Oh well. The "bothersome" bad news is that the size is so far off for me it's crazy. I normally wear a Medium in Patagonia jackets and many shirts, hoodies, etc. I order a Small sometimes for certain items, but it's fairly rare. I normally wear a Medium in Patagonia jackets and many shirts, hoodies, etc. I order a Small sometimes for certain items, but it's fairly rare. I ordered this Sunshade Technical Hoody in a Small because I saw it was a Relaxed Fit item, and since I am sometimes on the edge of Small/Medium I went down a size. The small is HUGE, which makes this the ONLY Patagonia Small I've ever had in 20 years that fits too large. The sleeves are too long, the whole fit is too loose, and the hoody has a little bit too much material. Glad I didn't get Medium, which is what I wear in both the Houdini Jacket and Pullover, as well as other items like the Long-Sleeved Nine Trails Shirt. The Medium-sized Long-Sleeved Nine Trails Shirt and Houdini P/O both fit me PERFECT by the way, in the arms, chest, and waist. So, with this item, I might investigate if Backcountry.com will hook me up with an XS and swap my Small, since that is where I bought it. Otherwise, I guess I'll just wear it and enjoy the sun protection while getting used to the larger "flowy" size while I run my Summer mountain trails.
The material on this item is very soft and comfortable, no complaints there. For me, the issue lies with the hood. I have an older generation of this item and the hood on that one is ample big and fits very well over a baseball hat; it provides excellent coverage of both face and neck, and the hood is a loose fit which is ideal. With this new generation, the hood is kind of tapered - leaving your cheeks and face exposed to the sun (depending where in the sky the sun is). If the old style hood was in play here, this would be 5 stars for me. But in my situation, face and neck coverage is very important.
I'm really glad Patagonia brought this product back. This is the ultimate performance desert sun shirt. Also great as a light rash guard for snorkeling and water activities. However the sizing is crazy. The old Large was for a person of average height that is thick in the middle. The new Large is for someone who is over 6' tall. The arms are comically oversized on me. I will try the Medium but I'm skeptical.
