Versatile piece, keeps you warm with fleece and allows you to dump heat quickly by unzipping. Also provides minor rain and wind resistance, tho you will need an outer shell if the weather picks up. Jack of all trades - master of none.

Nice product overall. Sleek fit, good stretch, breathable, holds warmth, thin for layering, water repellent. Overall impressive at the office.Only negative is lack of durability. I took a mild fall from my MTB, and the thing literally disintegrated. Anywhere it touched the ground it got holes. My skin didn't even get abrasions in the same spots where the jacket dissolved. It's almost as though the experience was too much for it emotionally, so it simply gave up.Would I recommend this product, yes as long as you don't plan on dropping it. I'd recommend setting it down gently, preferably on a soft bed. I've decided to 'upcycle' so I can tell my friends the story of the day my Patagonia jacket gave up on life. I bought this jacket as a test to the Patagonia name. ... MoreNice product overall. Sleek fit, good stretch, breathable, holds warmth, thin for layering, water repellent. He'd be even more disappointed than me.

I had the previous version, the Patagonia words were stitched on instead of a label. I'm 6'0, 195, 42R, and large runs large - I was not good choosing sizes at the time. The R1 is an excellent "jacket" that I wear extensively in spring and autumn. I'm easily cold, and the R1 helps retain body heat enough through changing temperatures during the day or while I warm up in brisk walks. In light-cool weather, I use it as a middle layer to moderate body temperature with a parka outside. The R1 is excellent in doing that.I unequivocally recommend this flexible "jacket." There's nothing in the market I can compare to in serving its purpose and making me feel comfortable.

About time they got rid of the hood. I have the hoody, which is great, but with the hood being sized for a helmet, not a very useable hood... unless you walk around town in a helmet. This is such a great lightweight jacket. Great as a mid layer or just for everyday wear. Wish they brought the sprout green color back, but black will suffice. Arms are long but that actually works pretty well for activities where you stretch your arms out, perfect for biking. 5’10, 200lbs, a large fits great. Pretty snug but stretchy from the shoulders all the way to the hands. Not so much that it looks like some muscle jacket though.
The R1 Techface is limited in uses, as it is very thin and not designed to provide much warmth in low-output activities, but it is perfect for cross-country skiing and cold-weather runs.It has a great combination of wind resistance and breathability, and plenty of warmth once you areactive. This fleece does a good job at trapping in heat, so while (when I use it cross-country skiing) I might be a bit cold for the first 5-10 minutes, as I generate body heat, it keeps that heat in, and feels like a much warmer fleece than the thickness would indicate.I also had an older version of the R1 Techface, which had overly long and tight sleeves, the newer version of it does not have that issue. It runs true to size.
Great light weight sweater for walking/hiking in the ~8-16 C range.Seems pretty good for running (down to ~5 C).The fabric is pretty thin though (in a good way), so go for the R2 if you want something heavier, but it is pretty warm for the thickness. There is also a waterproof coating that works great for light drizzle or fog.
Had the R1 a few years ago and loved it! Still have it- orange- high vis and great for outdoor activity as a base layer over under armor or smart wool. Wanted another one in a more subdued color for travel. The new one is a different jacket. It is larger and looser- I can live with this. The secondary internal pockets are gone! These internal pockets were the main reason I ordered another one. On the older version- These pockets piggy backed off the outer pockets. Those inner pockets are key for keeping batteries and contacts and power bars warm. Why the change- probably less labor and material but the price stayed the same...
The weight of this jacket is quite light, making it the perfect companion for everything from everyday wear to the office, to hanging on the beach in the morning/evening, to hiking, to running/post-run, and as a light layer under a shell. The fit is as expected, which is definitely not a given with Patagonia, but this piece is dialed in.The Hem cord is well done and appreciated. The zippered pockets are perfect and highly functional.Overall the piece is pretty flawless from my perspective, having tried about 6-8 other styles in this category from Patagonia, it's the best.Only downside is the price seems high for the lightweight nature of the piece. Considering there is substantial innovation going into the fabrics and one is helping to finance Patagonia's eco programs with every purchase, I'd say it's worth the price.I'm the first month having this jacket in San Diego (July) Ive worn it everyday, usually mornings and evenings. I love it.
I'm a big fan of the R1 TechFace series because of the versatility it provides. It's not as warm as the original R1 when worn as a base layer but it offers wind and abrasion resistance that the original R1 lacks. Unfortunately, the 2020 TechFace jacket version has a loose fit and no internal pockets or chest pockets. The pockets it has aren't accessible with a waist strap pack or climbing harness, which, in my opinion was the primary reason to utilize the abrasion resistant fabric. I'm sure it works fine as a lightweight loose fitting casual jacket. Maybe that's where Patagonia was headed with the re-design. For me, it's a design-fail in terms of technical function. It's too loose and too bulky. I returned it.
200lbs, 5'7, bought a size Large.Nice stretchy material, articulated elbows, gusseted underarms, makes for a very comfortable jacket. Sleeves are way too long and the cuffs have little to no elastic in them to keep them in place. Otherwise, everything else is great.
