Best Summer Hiking Shorts!

I just ordered a second pair of these shorts because I adore the fabric -- it's super lightweight and silky-soft, making them incredibly comfortable. I have long legs and the length of these shorts is perfect for not wanting to show off a lot of leg and having a little more coverage when hiking. They have a very lightweight built-in underwear which I didn't realize and wasn't sure I'd like, but they're not constricting in any way which I prefer in warmer months. The drawstring doesn't do much because of the elastic waistband, but being relatively slim and tall the medium made these just loose enough to be comfy but not feel like they're falling off. I also live in these shorts around the house. You can't go wrong with them!

Good length, bad liner

I was very excited that there was a short option that was a slightly longer inseam but not as long as the 6" nine trails shorts. I ordered my usual Medium (5' 4", 140-145, 27-28" waist), and they generally fit and the material is super lightweight. I also love that there are two zipper pockets, one on each side. However, I had to deduct stars because the liner is a terrible, flimsy material that doesn't fit like the rest of the shorts. As soon as you put them on and move even the slightest bit, the liner rides up and is uncomfortable, so you essentially have to keep trying to readjust it, but it won't stay in place. I'm just really disappointed that for this price and what I usually expect in terms of Patagonia quality that it these shorts would be so functionally ... MoreI was very excited that there was a short option that was a slightly longer inseam but not as long as the 6" nine trails shorts. Good multi-use short, not the greatest for thicker thighs

I bought these because I wanted a slightly more modest lightweight short for running, hiking, etc. The material is fantastic. It's breathable and quick-drying. The pockets are roomy, my phone fits easily. They're long enough to make me feel covered (and chafing-free!). My only problem is the dimensions. Like with most other brands, I struggle with finding shorts that accommodate a thicker, gapless set of thighs. These are definitely not the worst ones out there, when I'm just walking around, they're mostly okay. However, the moment my steps become even the slightest bit longer or quicker (or the hike goes uphill), the shorts start to venture upwards. I don't think sizing up would solve the issue because they fit my waist perfectly, it's just the thigh region that is ... MoreI bought these because I wanted a slightly more modest lightweight short for running, hiking, etc. The material is fantastic. I love these shorts!
31 May 2023

I know one is not supposed to love objects, but I unapologetically love these shorts. They are lightweight, long enough without being too long, and best of all they have deep pockets WITH zippers! My god, who knew womens shorts needed deep pockets with zippers? Oh wait, women did. These shorts are awesome, I wear them as often as I can, and am slowly building my collection to have every color. Would love to see these in Navy Blue as well as some additional patterns. As someone who sweats a lot, I am usually looking for dark colors or patterns. While these shorts dry very quickly, I am still hesitant about wearing the lighter colors while running. Either way though, these shorts are awesome and I recommend them 10 out of 10. I wear a 4 in the skyline traveler pant and am an XS in these shorts. The liner of the small fit better than the XS but they looked too baggy, so I have been buying and wearing the XSs.

Perfect active shorts
27 February 2024

These are my favorite active shorts! I love having the 2 side pockets to hold my phone. They zip shut which is nice because I can keep my keys secure while taking a walk. I don't really use the back pocket. Material is very soft and doesn't restrict movement. The liner is nice and soft, but I could honestly do without it. I think the length is perfect! I am 5'7" and they hit slightly above mid-thigh. I wear a size medium in the Patagonia baggies shorts but these are stretchier so a size small is perfect.

Perfect for Thru-hiking
22 August 2024

I wore these on the JMT for 20+ days straight in harsh conditions and they were fantastic. The zippered pockets are so handy for setting up a tent (holding stakes, etc), filtering water (holding caps), etc. They dry really fast.I cut out the liner and it made these SO much better! It made them more comfortable and fit better (could wear higher on hips).I was shocked that I didn't get any tears. I was sitting on rocks, stones, sticks, dirt etc.I highly recommend to any thru-hiker.

Perfect running shorts
27 July 2024

Love these. Super comfortable, great pockets. Fit true to size. I’m typically in between a small and medium in Patagonia bottoms. I got these in both sizes and ended up keeping them both. The small is maybe a bit more aesthetic? But both sizes work fine. Use for summer trail running. Not sure I will wear any of my old running shorts again these are so comfortable. For fit reference I am 5’5”, 135.

So comfortable, with useful pockets!
4 June 2024

I just pulled these shorts out for the first time this year, and was inspired to come and write a review (and consider purchasing another pair) after I put them on and remembered how much I love them.I confess that I am not a runner, and don't really hike much anymore. But honestly, these are the best shorts for wearing around the yard on a hot day when I have a lot of weeds to pull, stumps to dig up, etc. I guess the same thing that makes them good for running and hiking makes them good for having to squat and move around a lot while doing yardwork. The light weight and bit of stretch are just perfect. I particularly love the pockets on these shorts. I always have my phone on me when I'm out doing yardwork -- not only am I usually listening to audiobooks, but I ... MoreI just pulled these shorts out for the first time this year, and was inspired to come and write a review (and consider purchasing another pair) after I put them on and remembered how much I love them.I confess that I am not a runner, and don't really hike much anymore. I always have my phone on me when I'm out doing yardwork -- not only am I usually listening to audiobooks, but I want to be able to take photos or use a plant ID app. It can be hard to find shorts that have pockets that can hold a phone securely and comfortably, without the bulk of it getting in the way when I squat. These shorts are the first ones I've found that make this easy, outside of leggings with side pockets.

The perfect short.
18 September 2023

I haven't worn shorts in years to run because of chafing. I've stuck explicitly to biker shorts. A friend recommended these shorts to me, and I now swear by them. The inseam and fit are awesome. I'm 5'8" and 150ish with a small waist and athletic legs. Patagonia sizing has never really been consistent for me in the pant/short department, but these are a great fit at a medium for my build. I could probably do a small for the waist, but the medium for my thighs is perfect. They've got a drawstring to make up for the give in the waist. I've gone on long hikes, runs, and alpine adventures in these shorts and have yet to chafe. They're awesome. I'll wear them forever! Do yourself a favor and get a pair!

These are nice shorts, but the Nine Trails 6" were better for running
22 August 2023

I was hoping that these shorts would be like the Patagonia Nine Trails 6" shorts, which I love ( I also have the Nine Trails 4", and love those, too). Although the Multi Trails are somewhat similar, and probably the closest to the Nine Trails shorts that Patagonia has right now, they just don't fit as well. When running, I really prefer the location of the back zippered pocket of the Nine Trails which holds a phone, keys, or gels, etc. perfectly. The pocket is located in the middle upper back of the shorts so the weight of whatever you put in there isn't dragging down to one side or the other. The MultiTrails has one pocket on the back right, that is not zippered. I imagine this pocket location would be better for hiking/backpacking when you might have a pack on. However, when hiking/backpacking, I prefer a short without a liner, so I can choose to wear either a swim bottom or underwear. Overall, these are nice shorts, but not what I was looking for in a running short. Please bring back the Nine Trails or something similar!
