A dirty bag?!?

This is a nice design but when I picked it up at REI, it was clearly dirty. Yes, dirty, like someone had already used the bag. I don't know whether to think the new "no bags" policy caused it to get really dirty in the backroom of the store. Or if someone had purchased it and returned it. I realized it right away but there were at least 20 people behind me in line. So I left the store with it. It is going back to REI, of course. It was really odd that the REI staffer did not do anything about it. I mentioned it. He just kept working on the transaction. I am sure the staffers were beat by the last day of the sale. You have to reconfigure the adjustable compartments from the side of the bag.

Upon buying this even on a 20% discount, I was like is the Peak Design side-open everyday backpack worth the money? Yes. Yes, it is completely worth it, and the unique features will remind you of that everyday. The big factors like the mag latch main pocket is easy and just super fun to use, and the side zippers just zip with a smoothness I have not seen before even when stretched with things inside the bag. Plus the side pockets stretch big enough to hold the hydro flask 64oz bottle just fine (inside separators need 1/3 bent in so internal space lost from bottle pressure), not a biggie to carry a double Nalgene sized thermos in the side pocket. The zipper pulls have a zipper lock feature++. The magnetic pockets internally are just so smoooooth. I bought this bag as a treat for myself, as a new commuter bag for a new job. I would typically never spend this much on something for my self, much less a backpack. But I fell in love with it in the store, gleefully took it home and watched a 30+ minute product video with all the features. I was smitten. Used it for 1 week at work, took it on a 1 week vacation, and apparently 2 weeks of use was too much for the top zipper. Can’t believe it, it’s jammed and very difficult to zip/unzip. Trying wrestling with it to no avail. Even after they spent a solid 12 mins in the video talking about perfecting this zipper. Glad I bought it from REI so I can return it and not be out $300 on a backpack that lasted 2 weeks.

Excellent bag with a learning curve and drawbacks
16 May 2022

I've been using this bag both for everyday carry and as the "personal item" on a recent trip. I am not a photographer or videographer, so it was used for general carry (laptop, tablet, tech kit, Nintendo Switch, etc.) The bag is excellent quality and looks great, but there are some details that take some getting used to.Pros:- Midnight color is gorgeous and looks almost leather-like. Feels very durable. To be perfectly honest, I mostly got this bag for its looks more than anything. I wanted something that looked professional and sleekd and was a dark blue color, and this fit the bill.- Dividers give a lot of flexibility to the inside. Feels very durable. To be perfectly honest, I mostly got this bag for its looks more than anything. I wanted something that looked professional and sleekd and was a dark blue color, and this fit the bill.- Dividers give a lot of flexibility to the inside. I was able to arrange things to optimize access and organization.- The straps are quite comfortable and it's easy to rotate the bag with one strap on to grab stuff on the side openings.- The water bottle pockets are great and my bottle never fell over, a first for me after lots of lost bottles on other bags.- The zippers are super smooth and rarely got snagged even when slightly overpacked.- The luggage pass-through works great on a carry-on sized roller bag and made it so much easier to move through the airport. Again, the water bottle didn't fall out even when sideways on the roller bag.- The magnets to keep the straps close to the back make for a super clean lookCons:- The 20L version isn't super wide. I can barely fit my Nintendo Switch in its case lengthwise, and will not fit an Apple Magic Keyboard. I have to store them vertically and remove one of the dividers so they fit. The bag in general is quite rigid and will not let itself be overstuffed. This would not be a good back for one-bag travel because of this limitation.- There's not really a great place to throw stuff from pockets (lip balm, phone, wallet) into the bag. There are some small pockets but they will not fit the items very well or they will fall out.- If stuff isn't in pouches, it can easily fall out of the bag when opened from the sides.- If storing both a laptop and tablet, it's a tight fit and the tablet is hard to get out. (I use a 16" MacBook Pro (thicker 2021 model) and a 10.9" iPad Air in a magnetic folio case)- It's not super comfortable to carry if it's very heavy as the hip belt is not included. The sternum strap helps but the bag doesn't rest well on my hips. I'm also a woman, so the unisex bag might not be optimized for shorter torsos. This is not a huge deal and instead an incentive to keep it light anyways.- The sternum strap is sleek, but very hard to put on and off.- The laptop compartment's zipper pull is much smaller than the others and it was quite hard to lock it up, but it is possible.

Impressed beyond my expectation for general travel
15 April 2023

I did online research to find a feature laden small/mid backpack that had features that met my parameters and was “cool” as well. I watch YT vids and checked online reviews. I watched the PD video which carefully detailed the many cool/unusual features of the pack. After spending more time than I anticipated, I homed in on the Peak Design 30L. Moosejaw had a sale and I popped for the item. There are so many functional details and features that I had to re-watch the PD video with the pack to check out how to personalize and be familiar with them all. THIS THING IS GREAT! Only downside is that I showed it to my wife and now she wants one for our next Euro trip.

Nicely made bag that's great for photography and travel
15 November 2022

I bought this bag to hold my photography gear while travelling, and it does the job well. The adjustable shelves make it really easy to organize my gear and build custom "compartments" to properly hold everything I want to carry. There's a lot of magnets that are used to secure different pockets/compartments and to help you stow the shoulder straps, which are really nice to use and convenient. The laptop compartment is adjustable but a bit tight compared to other backpacks I've used previously, especially if you have a thicker laptop. I shoot with the Leica M system, and despite the customizability of the interior shelves, even the smallest compartment is awkwardly large to securely hold my lenses. With smaller lens systems like M43, Fuji-X, and Leica-M, you'll definitely need some additional padding or cases to secure and prevent your lenses from bouncing around. There's also a lot of different pockets, but I'd like to see placeholders for things like pens.

Secure enough for a European summer
7 September 2024

I was hesitant to get this bag because I was afraid the top flap wouldn’t be secure enough for the crowded cities I was visiting during the summer. I carried my camera equipment safely through Barcelona, Marseille and Paris during the Olympics. The built in hooks for the zippers worked perfectly and kept my bag safe and still allowed me to gain quick access when I needed it. At its fullest, I carried my 13” MacBook Air, canon R6, 70-200, 24-70, 16mm, 50mm and an Instax. Plus my passport and other small essentials. I’m short so the 20L fit well on my frame even at its heaviest. The contents of the bag also stayed dry during scattered summer showers and the sleek design made it easy to maneuver through crowds in the metro and at stadiums. The hook on the top flap stayed secure and kept my items completely safe, which actually shocked me. I thought it’d be easy for a pickpocketer to get into. I haven’t even mentioned the clean look and the absence of multiple hanging straps making life a little (a lot) easier for overhead/under the seat storage. Or the fact that you can slip it through a suitcase handle so seamlessly. The price is steep but you get what you pay for. I *highly* recommend it!

The shoulder straps are quite comfy, although the included sternum strap is a bit finicky to latch. Multiple anchor points would allow for a shoulder strap to convert this to a duffle-style bag at your leisure. In short, the Everyday Backpack is versatile, enduring, comfortable, fastidiously designed, and wants you to be your best self as you navigate whatever challenges life might throw your way. If you're looking for a companion (who is also a backpack) you've come to the right place.

The Ultimate Travel Backpack (20L version)
16 November 2022

I've spent most of my adult life living on a student's budget and lugging around cheap bags with my camera gear rolling around at the bottom. With a big girl job and some opportunities to travel, it was time for an upgrade. I appreciate that this bag is expensive, but you absolutely get what you pay for with this one. The bag feels substantial, and the zippers and closures feel premium and sturdy. With a big girl job and some opportunities to travel, it was time for an upgrade. I appreciate that this bag is expensive, but you absolutely get what you pay for with this one. The bag feels substantial, and the zippers and closures feel premium and sturdy. I can fit a large camera body, a 100-400mm lens, a 100mm macro, and 3 prime lenses in the bottom 2/3 of the bag, leaving the top 1/3 for all of the rest of the things I might need (book, snacks, wallet, headphones, etc.). I can easily fit a travel tripod and a small water bottle in the side pockets. The back pocket can easily hold a laptop and/or a tablet, cables, a battery pack, and even an external hard drive. Even stuffed to the brim, this bag is only the size of a personal item on American Airlines, and comfortably but snugly slides under the seat. It makes travel a breeze. The only complaint I have is that the bag is quite heavy, although this feels unavoidable. The padding gives me peace of mind, and I'm not afraid if my bag gets bumped around and beaten up, because I know my things will be safe inside it. It also looks cooler with the wear from every trip, although I know the imperfections are only cosmetic. I have no doubt this bag will serve me well for many years to come.

Very versatile bag with lots of thought put into the design.

Love the space and how it was designed to include a great deal of functionality. I use it for travel when I do not want to take all my equipment but need one DSLR and two of three lenses. Sometimes I travel with the rest of my family when I am not out professionally photographing. Can't stand not to take along a great camera and a few lenses along as I am afraid I will miss a great shot. This bag is plenty large enough and keeps me comfortable knowing I have what I need to get any shot that might present itself. I have plenty of room to bring along all my travel items as well as my lap top if needed. I looked at the 30L but decided this would fit my needs for what I was using it for. Turns out I made the correct decision.
