For you Tube Snobs and Lads and Ladies, this amp is really a great affordable all in one solution to learning to play and even for skillful artists. After reviewing some older reviews I was perplexed as to why anyone would not think this is a great amp. I have come to the conclusion that they may not know how to get good sound because they may not understand what it is. This amp delivers it. It has about the best gain distortion for a Solid state modeling amp. It is darn loud and the reverb is perfectly executed like spring reverb, not over washed or muddy. It has great dynamics. I suggest that you step away from it about 15 feet to tune in the bass and do not push it past half master use the Power Sponge as your master. At the master level, this is a 3 gain stage amp, the pre gain distortion, the master gain which actually does a bit more tube emulation and the the power sponge knob which controls the previous 2 gain stages. The power sponge actually is a clean power control. When this is used correctly you have massive control. I set the master gain at center where it is meant to be. The free Peavey Software Editor took me 10 minutes to Download and install. Here is where you can understand and operate the amp the easiest. You will see that a 4th gain stage can be added with included pedal SIMs like a driver or compressor. I can say that getting great guitar sound is sometimes pretty hard but in the case of this amp it is not. If you push the pre gain stages too loud it will be too muddy.This is the trick. I have a vypyr 75 and the amp is so simple just turning knobs. It has great sound too, but no power sponge and no dedicated acoustic preamp section. The power sponge is a huge improvement in the VIP 3. This amp is an improvement over the Vypyr 75. You gotta tweak at it just a little bit.

I own the Vypyr 75 the VIP 2 and now the VIP 3. I am particular about sound and feel. I own tube amps. I have more than 7 modeling amps. I have a home studio and band practice at my home. Nobody brings an amp. This is the best tube sound of any amp I own except my tube amps but the tone is better on the VIP 3. If you like metal such as Pink Floyd, Satriani, Steve Vai,Van Halen Toto, Boston, Gary Moore, all of 80s Metal, this is the amp for you. The included Triple x amp is the best articulate and balanced metal sound I have used. The 6534 is the fattest lead tone I have ever used. The Twin is darn good and with chorus and compression it does a fabulous 12 string. The Acoustic amps are great and the acoustic SIM is exceptional. Better than tubes in my opinion. Tubes fluctuate with room temperature and overheat when cranked then clearity becomes compressed. I have been approached repeatedly about my onstage sound. I have a Mustang 3 and a VIP 3, one above the other. It is an incredible combo. Best of two worlds. One doing awesome Classic Rock cleans and classic rock rythns, the other doing phenomenal metal but both do all very well.

I ordered the Sanpera II since it wasn't in the store, should be here soon.If you want you can even spend more money on Peavey's recording software. A CD is included that permits a 60-day trail to use it. Once you install the program it starts the 60 days, wish they'd give you the option to start it when you want. What if it's Monday and you can't use it until the weekend? There goes 4 days of the trial, so don't install until you're ready to start using it. If you're like me, you can buy a non-commercial license for sixty, seems like a decent price to record direct to your computer.Commenting on the review about the acoustic guitar clipping, the owner's manual says the input is designed for passive electronics and the volume should be reduced on the guitar to prevent clipping. It also mentions it auto adjusts the input properties when you select an acoustic or bass amp, but make sure to pay attention to the volume on the acoustic. Without knowing what went into the decision, this to me was a strange choice since most acoustics to my knowledge have a battery powered pickup and are active. But it wasn't a big deal, I just lowered the volume on my Tayor and it sounded pretty good. You can tell it sounds slightly like an acoustic being played through a speaker designed for an electric, but with a chorus effect it sounded quite good.I haven't used a bass in it as I don't have one. For the last few days I've enjoyed playing through this and look forward to exploring the unit further with the added benefit of the Sanpera II.For now switching between clean and metal channels is impractical, walking to the amp, turning the dial and finding the sound you want.Although Peavey seemed rather fixated on hitting the price point of competition (matched the Line 6 price for people who can't figure out the Line 6 also sells the footswitch separately), but honestly they should just offer a package deal with the Sanpera I or II.The footswitch thing is a minor nuisance easily remedied by purchasing a pedal. Just understand, just like the Line 6 you're not going to start gigging or even jamming at home by only buying the amp.If you have a need for a great amp that will give you bang for the buck, this is the ticket! I use this amp at home and for band performances. It is an outstanding electric guitar amp, offering many different types of amps all built into one unit. Within each amp option, many special effects are offered - most of which I don't use, other than the chorus setting which sounds super. The amp is incredibly powerful in the electric guitar setting, and very impressive in the acoustic guitar setting as well. I use it with both electric and acoustic guitars and I have it an A+++ rating for electric and an "A" for the acoustic. That said, if you want an amp just for acoustic guitar, I recommend other options such as Fender's Acoustasonic, which is just an overall better amp for strictly acoustic (just a warmer, crisper, richer sound and some great effects). It is adequate for jamming at home, but wouldn't cut it in a band setting or gig uptown. This can be overcome by running it through the PA system with a mic. There is no line out option, which is a strike - but using a mic seems to be an easy bypass to this shortfall. Other reviews suggest this amp is too difficult to use. I don't feel this way. You have to spend a little time learning your way around on it, but after a few uses I became quite comfortable. The presets are excellent.
5 stars for what it is but only the best sounding tube amp deserves a five imho. I picked this up on the cheap and didn't expect much. I didn't see a whole lot to get excited about until I turned just the amps on to start from, then built up the patches. The basic amp models are really, really good for this price point and are more than just usable. The effects are good but not exactly really full and three dimensional sounding compared to a killer analog pedal. Overall its surprisingly toneful, just be careful with pedal simms hot and standing too close otherwise there can be some buzzing. Get a sanpera II being able to turn effects on and off and using a looper is pretty critital with this. The Power Sponge feature is really cool for getting a specific volume while family is sleeping or you want it just a bit louder/quieter but can't get there with the main volume knob. There is no 1/4 out for recording so you'll have to use adapters or the USB port (cable not included). The amp modules have a nice sound and the effects sound good as well. I bought this amp at a local Sam Ash store. I actually kept it for 46 days, but they let me return it anyway - excellent service. I had an old Vypyr 15 that I liked, and I wanted to step up to a bigger amp. The Vypyr 3 is 100 watts, and has an LCD readout, so I got it. At first, I thought it sounded pretty good, except for a few things. However, after playing it for some time, and acquiring a Jackson guitar with a Duncan JB bridge pickup, I began noticing that the distortions, while smooth, didn't have much in the way of clarity. The 7 string was almost acceptable, with only a little latency, but it had a strange warbling sound. The baritone, and especially the bass models had way too much latency, and with the bass model, the strings need to be hit pretty hard, or there is just not much sound. Do not expect to make your guitar sound like a bass with this amp. The high-gain amp models have a strange decay, almost as if they have a noise gate set very high. Either you get feedback (which sounds fine), or the sound just drops off.I think that as I'm becoming more serious about the guitar (I'm actually a bass player who has played guitar off-and-on throughout the years), I'm realizing that maybe I don't like modeling amps. After I returned this one, I picked up an Orange Crush 35RT (also from Sam Ash) which is pretty cool. No built in effects, except for reverb, but a great sound.
I have 6 months with this amp and I have learned to live with it. I don't love it but I don't hate it either. The speaker is cheap, if you have experience with celestions vintage or other high quality speakers you can hear right away that the speaker is defenetly low quality. if you are patient enough and you tweak it around you can have nice sounds out of it. Not awesome sounds but decent sounds. One thing I like a lot about the amp is the clean sound, very nice, the acoustic simulator also works like a charm. On the other side the thing I most dislike about the amp is when you are playing from one preset and change it to another one, the amp will lag a lot, I'm talking about 1 second of delay where you won't get any sound at all. Called Peavey, was told that the possibilities were so vast there was not really any documentation of effects settings that were pre-programed into the amp available. There is not any listing of what the various effects boxes are or what they do. The VIP-1 & VIP-2 when you select a input function you only see the amps and boxes that relate to that input, not so with the VIP-3. Electric, Acoustic or Bass you are presented with the same list of amps and boxes. So unless you are quite knowledgeable or are just a good enough musician where you like to experiment, I would suggest seriously consider the VIP-2 it is much more user friendly. The rating value is a hard choice, if you chose the correct VIP for you knowledge and skill lever, it will be excellent. In my case since I had know idea what most of the effects boxes and amps were and Peavey could not provide me with that information the amp left a lot to be desired. In the manual most of the amps have a brief description in the VIP-2 section but the VIP-3 ads a few more that are not in the manual at all. I repeat make your choice carefully, if you choose the right model for your needs you will be a happy musician.
It's a Great Unit the software is lacking bad. Also they took about a dozen amps from 1st gen & gave us a bunch of nonsense toy like special Fx you'll never use. I wish they would kept the old amp models & left the Electric Violin & Synth model & the Resonator Gtr 12 string...no body's going to use that stuff that what I expect from Zoom old processors they were full of Useless Patches big WOW Factor but useless in creating music. I love the Vypyr series this was a let down but some great stuff like the Bass Amps sound Great & the Acoustic well....they can pass.
