Pelican 1535 Air Case - No Foam - Black
The waterproof 1535AirNF Wheeled Carry-On Hard Case in black from Pelican is a crushproof hard case made from lightweight HPX2 polymer that will protect and store sensitive gear. The case secures with an updated push-button latching system that uses compressive force to tightly clamp the case shut. This edition of the 1535Air comes lined but without foam or other inserts, allowing you the freedom to completely customize the roomy 20.4 x 11.2 x 7.2" interior to your specific needs and to your specific gear. Carry your case using the overmolded handle or if it's too heavy, extend the pull handle and tow it behind you on its two low-profile, quiet-running wheels. Your case is made of a super-light proprietary HPX2 polymer with honeycomb structural elements, which is up to 40% lighter than most other Pelican polymers. Case design features include an O-ring that seals it to an IP67-rating to make it dust and waterproof, dual 5/16" (8mm) diameter stainless steel reinforced padlock holes, and a pressure relief valve. This valve regulates the internal pressure, keeping your gear and the case from getting crushed and allowing you to open the case without having to break a tough pressurized seal that may develop. For easy identification, there's a polycarbonate card holder that may be placed on the front or side of the case. As with all bags and cases, check with your specific airline for the exact measurements of what they consider "carry-on" luggage.

I've travelled with this case twice now on planes, to Florida and Argentina. I used it as a carry on with no issues. Fits Sony A1, A9, 200-600mm lens (hood reversed), binoculars, and misc accessories like batteries, rocket air duster, extra cards, etc...

I previously own the 1510 & bought this and a 1525 Air as part of renewing my kit. The 1535 Air has a very slick look to it as its a darker shade of black. It's capacity is slightly less than the 1510 in practice due to the inset wheel carriage, a DSLR body with grip doesn't fit in nicely when you have a lid organizer on it (I bought the SKB Laptop Lid Organizer for this 1535 Air).Within my first shoot to a location studio, the case had some scraps on the bottom due to the very low clearance of the wheels. (The case had to traverse asphalt, pedestrian walkways & granite stone paths - the last was the killer blow scrapper) This new HPX2 Polypropylene blend is just not as hard/resilient as the previous 1510. The 1535 Air will immediately flex on the top and the sides of the case, which isn't very assuring. Standing on the ribs might slightly alleviate the pressure but it brings into question on whether well packed equipment inside could be compressed and broken. The top handle is back in the 2017 version onwards, but it is a shadow of the 1510 handle. I find myself using the top handle more often than the side handle so I'm not sure why Pelican decided to shave it down to a sliver of a handle. With all that said, I'll see how the case survives in the next 12 months, but the OCD in me is worried that I might have bought into brand perception & visual sleekness instead of reliability and function.

Fits perfect in most overhead luggage compartments. The retractable handle and wheels make it easy to move through airports. Handles rough ground OK. The padded divider pieces are perfect for reconfiguring for different gear. You pay more, but the Air series shaves off a few pounds, which could make the difference in a luggage overage fee if you are checking this thing. But at this size, it's pretty easy to keep under 50 lbs.

The case works as advertised. It’ll keep gear safe and I enjoy hard cases for ease of accessing and organizing equipment. I have a small, non-Air, pelican case that feels more solid. This Air case however… for a $250 piece of plastic (I bought the empty shell, made my own insert for $50) that’s made in the USA, I expected better craftsmanship. The lid is somewhat flimsy, the wheels are of a different tightness. But my main issue is the retractable handle for pulling. It is incredibly flimsy with several inches of play left to right and an inch front to back. I’m sure it won’t break but it doesn’t feel good to use.Again, it works and I decided to keep it, it will protect my equipment. I was just disappointed in the build quality.
There seem to be two versions, older one without the top handle and newer one with it added. (description sometimes says 2017 on newer but not sure how careful they are when fulfilling order). If you use it all day everyday like I do, make sure you get the version without the top handle. The case becomes a convenient seat wherever you go! Sports, runway, subway, airport, lines, just waiting around. Extra security too as case harder to snatch and grab if you sitting on it. Imagine shooting a soccer game for 2 hrs with a lumpy handle poking you in the arse. It's not laziness either, good sports photographers know to get low.I remember a few months ago being next to Fashion Week house photographer Frazer Harrison, he had a 1510 case and resorted to using airplane neck ... MoreThere seem to be two versions, older one without the top handle and newer one with it added. Everyone I've shown the smooth top to thought it was a great idea.
Purchased in December 2017 and it was for computer and IT related instruments for daily use and it did not hold up. The first few weeks I was quite happy with the product as I have been using Pelican for decades. At about the 10 month mark I heard different sounds coming from the wheels as if the bearings were grinding and about the 14 month mark I found out that there is nothing that can be done unless you press out the old wheels and install the new wheels. Regardless it became unable to wheel around and I was a bit furious over this since the product did not work anymore and now I am having to find another NON AIR Pelican case that will last and be serviceable going forward. Whats Trendy is never a guarantee. I will still use Pelican but not this for daily use.
This wheeled case meets carry-on requirements as well as practical considerations of weight and security. I am a professional filmmaker and work internationally in sometimes difficult and insecure conditions. This is not the first Pelican case I have owned and used, but it has advantages (weight) that the others have not. Highly recommended for its intended use. B&G is a great company: knowledgable, professional and friendly people at the other end of the phone / keyboard; great customer service systems; wide and deep selection of products; efficient transaction and shipping processes; competitive prices. Let´s hear it for NYC!
In the past I usually went with the cheaper Harbor Freight cases, but went for the genuine Pelican for my recent kit. I can only say good things about the 1535 air. I think the most noteworthy is the weight and size for travel. I do wish that the foam had two levels of height for shorter items, but I was able to cut some foam to work as needed. So far the foam is holding up and not flaking or shedding. If you are looking to save money with a knock off...don't.
my wife and i are planning a safari plus Venice Italy trip soon, so i got this case. we will be in Venice during flood season, so walking to/from the hotel with luggage, especially all my camera gear, was a concern.the first thing i did when i got the case, was put 44 lbs of dumbells into it, and fill the bathtub. it leaked about 1-2 cc's into the case.my test was 1 hr, with me pushing the case under water a few times (even with that weight, it floats). Pelican told me that their testing is much shorter, and my pushing it was probably unrealistic, but it seems worth mentioning, just to be complete. walking in venice, if the water is that high, i won't be pushing it under the water; floating works for me.the 1-2 cc's was mostly near the seal, although some made ... Moremy wife and i are planning a safari plus Venice Italy trip soon, so i got this case. we will be in Venice during flood season, so walking to/from the hotel with luggage, especially all my camera gear, was a concern.the first thing i did when i got the case, was put 44 lbs of dumbells into it, and fill the bathtub. it leaked about 1-2 cc's into the case.my test was 1 hr, with me pushing the case under water a few times (even with that weight, it floats). This is the perfect size to fit on an overhead bin. had no trouble getting through TSA. I did buy A-Mode limited dividers and lid organizer set which was a must. I could fit a 100-400 canon lens, 2 bodies, a 24-70 and 17-40 lenses plus their hood, as well as cards, batteries, a charger, etc. in the organizers. It also wheels nicely on flat surfaces, but not as well on grass/dirt/gravel, so having the handles to carry it is helpful in that case. The red case was sold out so got the orange so it stands out.
