Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet (750ml)

(438 reviews)

The Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2020 vintage is crimson with purple hues at the core. Generous aromatics, equal parts sweet and savoury notes. Each varietal brings something intriguing to the party. Perfumed baking spices abound with raspberry coulis, dark cherry Danish and castor sugar dusting. A hint of bergamot provides an Earl Grey-esque allure. There is a certain plushness to the nose that is enriched by the presence of exotic spice. Oak derived spice makes its presence felt by way of Hungarian paprika and celery salt. There are layers of flavour, the sweetness of hazelnut chocolate balanced by savoury pan-seared pancetta, sandalwood and salted nori. A fine line of acid and talcy tannins make for a supple and plush mouthfeel.

An amazing wine, the power of the Shiraz blends perfectly with the elegance of the Cabernet Sauvignon. It does not betray expectations, round and full-bodied in the mouth with smooth tannins that caress the palate. Hints of fruit, blackberry, plum, accompanied by nuances of liquorice. Very pleasant nose

A friend introduced me to Penfolds 15 years ago when America didn't know Australia made wine. I still enjoy it tremendously and have introduced many to this great table wine.

Okay, hear me out, this wine is stellar and a great value. I had the 2017 vintage and it was spectacular - a lot of deep dark fruit, some bordeaux-like minerality, and a smoky earthiness on the finish.....but there's a catch. If youre a penfolds enthusiast you know their younger wines need a substantial amount of time to breathe. This wine needed a 6 hour decant before it showed well, similar to the BIN389. Trust me, these wines from penfolds ALWAYS open up tight but develop so well with a long decant.

Great value for the quality
6 March 2022

An everyday wine without burning a hole in the pocket.Love this wine, blended with the 2 most popular variant of Shiraz and Cabernet.Full bodied red and velvety tannins that's great on its own. Also love to have this with braised pig trotters. The savoury meat and sauce pairs great with tannins and slight hint of peppery note of this wine.

Pricing is wrong
8 October 2021

Another red that ocado is pricing beyond its quality level. Wouldn't be bad for a ?8 wine. Very high alcohol but that characteristic is all it can boast about. There are much better wines at the current price point. Unfortunately you can't buy any of them at Ocado.

Very disappointing
3 February 2018

2015 vintage. Aromatically challenged and tight. I struggled to pull out some faint plum and blackberry but mostly alcohol. The front attack consisted of a blast of hard tannins and alcohol, with again faint dark fruits. Thin which was disappointing for any wine with a heavy shiraz component. Hot mid-palate and a quick finish. This wine isn't pleasing to smell or drink. It is a weak effort that I frankly don't understand how anyone would recommend.
