Bought 2 Battle II 2500s last fall to fish for speckled trout, puppy drum and schoolie stripers. Within a week or two they became hard to reel - not all the time, but on occasion. Used them for about a month or so. Got them out this year and it is happening again. Took them to a Penn authorized repair shop who took them apart and said the anitreverse bearing was rusted on both reels. I rinse them with fresh water after each use, but the dealer's repairman said you can't do that anymore since the anti-reverse bearings are not made of stainless - they use magnets for the antireverse so they have to use non-stainless steel bearings. Can only use a light mist of fresh water to try and wash the salt off. Repair to these Battle reels not covered under warranty, even though well under a year old. Will be buying Daiwa BG from now on out (the Penn authorized repairman made this recommendation). So much for 50 years of using Penn gear.

I have been beach fishing for 30+ years. Heard several people recommend the Penn reels. I have a worn out shoulder and elbow. I was looking for a light weight reel that would still hold up. I was impressed with the reel, took it to the beach fishing for a week. Cast like a dream, landed a 4 foot shark no problem. Very smooth when reeling in, drag is exceptional! Can fine tune to what you need. We were going after Redfish, Trout and Flounder. Trout have soft mouth so you have to use less drag. Works flawless. I have been a Shimano guy for years, still love them, but the Penn is changing my mind.

I have one of these badass little reels filled up with 30lb powerpro. I use this reel every time I visit Florida for all of my inshore fishing needs. Snappers, snook, small tarpon, bonefish, redfish, making bait, spanish mackerel etc.... On the west coast I exclusively use it to throw light surface lures like waxwings and stickbaits to schoolie yellowtails and calico bass. I did one local half day trip out of Long Beach last year and landed 4 15-20 lb yellowtail on it. The deckies were casting heavy irons and each got one but just couldn't get the distance or accuracy to present to the breezing fish that I was able to with the light spinning gear. I had a sea lion grab one yellow by the tail and i fought him for it for about 15 minutes. I got the fish back from him ... MoreI have one of these badass little reels filled up with 30lb powerpro. I got the fish back from him after another sea lion came up and bit the fishes face, they proceeded to fight each other as I cranked that yellow in across the surface as fast as I could. A couple holes in the head and a couple in the tail with the meat perfectly intact. This little reel stood up to a 500+lb sea lion and didn't skip a beat! Couldn't ask for more, I disassembled the whole reel afterwards and I couldn't see any wear marks on any of the gears or anything like that. Put it back together and its still operating at 100%.

Excellent reel. I bought the 2000 for walleye fishing and its just the perfect size and strength for that species or the occasional large northern pike I might encounter while chasing them. The reel is very well made, with corrosion resistant materials like anodized aluminum and sealed ball bearing races It is strong, smooth, and handsome. The handle is strong and unscrews to fold into the reel small for a case. I use it on a Fenwick medium light 6'6" HMX rod and it is near perfectly balanced for a 9.8 oz reel. The spool accommodates braided line without having to use a mono backing because of a rubber ring built into the floor of the spool. Cleaver and welcome by this fisherman. From the 1000 untralight size to the shark and marlin ready 8000, this reel will cover anything you can catch on rod and reel without breaking your bank account in the process. There may be better spinning reels, but you will pay double or more for them and hardly have any difference in performance.
We fish in Alaska, one of the best places for testing durability endurance in power of any fishing reel. 6000 and 8000 are my favorite versatile fishing reels. Most of the time we use the same setup with 100 lb braided line. 130 lb spinning jigging Penn rod. Just changing lure and presentation allowed us to use for: jigging for monster halibut, cod and rockfish. Also we use it for trolling for Kings or silver salmon. It is much faster to drop fishing lure 5, 7 or 9 oz to 200 ft of water then conventional open face real. Indirectly your lure action and presentation is 50% faster. Coolest thing about jigging for rockfish in Alaska, sometime School of king or silver w will show up and you can just cast, Target them directly around your boat just below surface. I switched to Penn after using another brand for over 30 years. What attracted me to Penn was the website (excellent product information) and the value for the money Penn reels deliver. My first Penn was the Fierce III liveliner, I quickly followed up with the Battle II for my other rods. I fish only freshwater, great lakes salmonid species and used the Battle II on my rods for pier fishing with spoons. The Battle II has performed extremely well for me, the HT-100 drag system is extremely smooth and more than capable of handling the quick long runs of salmonid species. The reel is well made with an all metal construction and is very durable with a smooth retrieve when casting my favorite spoons. The line capacity rings are a great feature, when I first spooled the reel with line I over filled the spool not understanding how the capacity rings worked. I had as a result a few tangles occur when I cast, once I realized my error and removed the excess line filling the spool to only the last ring, I have had no issues with casting this reel. The 4000 model has plenty of capacity for 10 lb line (over 200 yards) which I require when pier fishing for salmonids. In summary a high performance reel for a very reasonable price.
I bought the Battle II 6000 just over a year ago. Took it out for a big test offshore out of Venice Louisiana. The performance was impeccable. Light smooth and perfectly balanced. I was at first concerned it wouldn't not handle some of the large species we are known to catch off the Louisiana coast but was very pleased and impressed with the smooth performance and the drag power. Put it on a Penn Battle II 7' fast action rod and pulled in large snapper, amberjack, king and even a 125# shark with no problem. After that trip I went out and bought the battle II 3000 for inshore trout and redfish and black drum. The 3000 performed great on 2 30+ lb black drum. Been fishing 40 years now and these are by far my favorites. I'm a Penn man for life! Hitting Venice with them ... MoreI bought the Battle II 6000 just over a year ago. Really solid feel when mounted to rod, smooth winding action and really smooth drag. Fitted to a 5 kg 10’6 surf rod and the balance is perfect. Fighting a fish with this reel is effortless and also casts rather well. Would’ve bought a battle 3 but getting this reel on special for $79 I wasn’t going to argue. Just wish I got a couple more....
my son read all of the positive reviews before gifting me this reel for moderate action on a tidal river (slot redfish, trout, flounder, etc) about a year ago. Liked it, used it maybe 1-2 times per month, rigged with braided line. Cast lures or jigheads, easy throws. Each use the reel is rinsed with fresh water, periodically sprayed with Reel Magic, stored in a dry connected garage in a rod holder (no direct sun). No weather extremes in North Florida. Last time in use while retrieving a fish the reel began skipping and would crank roughly and get stuck -- feels like a bearing is seized or flawed. Stopped using it to prevent further damage. Have a report in to Penn; surprised b/c this should be a lifetime type of reel for internal components, especially given the ... Moremy son read all of the positive reviews before gifting me this reel for moderate action on a tidal river (slot redfish, trout, flounder, etc) about a year ago. Most of our other reels (trolling, baitcaster and spinning) are over a decade old and operate fine so I don't think it's the use or maintenance routine on our side.
Well balanced as long as your place it on a large enough rod seat. I have a nice 8 ft rod but is a bit thin and has a smallish seat. Probably a rod for a spin cast or a bass type reel, but advertised as a spinning rod. Replaced to a 10 ft ugly stick med-heavy surf casting spinning rod and fit perfect. The reel stands up to saltwater and is totally sealed and waterproof. All stainless steel or aluminum throughout. Placed 20 pound spider line on it and works beautifully. Braid ready and needs no special backing, just add line. Extra thick guide wire as all pens are now. Handle shaped well with an oval football shape that handles easily and tirelessly. Doesn’t click like old reel used to do but that’s not the style now days. I liked the clicking style for catfish and ... MoreWell balanced as long as your place it on a large enough rod seat. Freshwater rinse off when you get home. Relabel at the end of year and you are done.

The PENN Battle II offers attractive cosmetics, durable design, and silky smooth HT-100 drag as just a few of the many reasons why so many anglers fish this reel. The Full Metal Body construction allows it to maintain precision gear alignment under severe punishment. Superline Spool No backing is needed because of the rubber gasket that keeps superlines from slipping. By far the best value on the market at its price point.
