Recently purchased this reel for my custom built 9'6" spinning rod, to be used primarily for casting hard plastic divers and top water plugs as well as heavy soft plastics into the surf for European Sea Bass. Initial impression was positive, looks nice and feels very smooth. Started the spooling process, by backing the reel with 20 pound spiderwire and topping it off with 200 meters of Duel Hardcore X4, 1.5pe (25 lb breaking strain). I quickly became discouraged with the line lay. Large gaps formed at both the front and rear of the spool. I have been using this same line on another spinning reel (competitor) and absolutely love it...It's the best braided line I have ever used. I bought 2 conflict 5000 reels in the last year for inlet fishing for snook tarpon and redfish. One is for live bait, one is for artificial. The drag power on those reels fishing live bait against structure is awesome! I'm pulling big fish in heavy current with easy. My second I use throwing flair hawk jigs, and since I bought it I've landed 15 redfish over 40" too many snook to count, and 23 tarpon over 100lb. The drag is still smooth as silk and the handle is still tight. Feels like it came out of the box. I love these reels and am going to start replacing the rest of my reels with these. I'll attach some pictures sporting the conflict and fish I've caught. Thank you guys for coming out with such an affordable powerhouse reel!

I have had this reel for about a year now and I have caught 15# bonita, 15+# snook, 15+# jack crevalle and it performed well each time. During my last outing(catching the big jacks) I did have a few waves completely soak me and my reel. Rinsed it off with freshwater afterwards and that was that. But then when I went to use it a week later I felt resistance and grinding. Eventually it stopped working. So, I took it apart to investigate. Keep in mind I do grease and oil my reel very well and often. My main gear and crosswind gear were both broken. Multiple pieces broken off and the main gear had a huge crack. I would highly suggest that you guys upgrade the main gear to a more sturdy metal. It was properly cleaned and maintained after every use, including me taking it apart and cleaning it every couple of months. About 2.5 years after I purchased the reel, the handle began to become stuck and it was very difficult to turn the handle. I would take the whole reel apart and clean it, put it back together, and it would work like new. Then the same thing happened about 2 weeks later, where the same steps were taken and the reel worked fine. Finishing up a season with the 2000 here in Minnesota and I'm extremely impressed. This is a rock solid reel with a flawless drag, It handles 10# braid or 8#mono with equal ease, and within a couple of casts I forget it's there. I particularly appreciate its weight and heft, as it balances really well with the 6' 6" to 6'9" rods I prefer for walleye jigging and bass finesse presentation. I find too many of today's high tech, high end, reels too light to balance well with most rods. My Penns, however, bring a outfit's weight right under my hand. Doing this removes weight from the rod tip and increases sensitivity.
I was a "Shimano Man", Stradics were my weapons of choice. Eight months ago all of my equipment was stolen. I had heard good things about the spinning reels and their affordability. I first purchased a 2500 Penn Conflict, I absolutely love it. The reel is lightweight and durable. It has already "handled" some really big fish. I wade fish and have inadvertently dunk this reel multiple times, just a rinse and it is good to go. I recently added a 3000 Penn Conflict and a 4000 Penn Fierce to my arsenal.....I couldn't be happier. I never knew much about Penn reels, but didn't really like their "old school" look. The Fierce, Battle, and Conflicts are really sharp looking reels.
