I just came back from Sitka Alaska where I caught Salmon, Lingcod, Halibut and numerous assorted rockfish. I used the Fathom II reel for the first and it worked extremely well for all species. I recently purchased this reel and Alaska was my first fishing trip with it. I was especially happy with the increased gear ratio vs the Fathom, when Salmon charged the boat the faster reel was no problem on keeping up with the speedy hard charging Salmon. Stopping Lingcod from returning to the rocky bottom showed the strength of the smooth drag. I will no doubt puchase more Fathom II's .

I have the origional Fathom and it was time to add another complete set up to the arsenal. I paired the FathomII with the carnage II 80-200 6'6" rod for my new set up. I fish offshore in southern california / northern baja for tuna, yellowtail, dorado, and other pelagic fish and this set up makes short work of them. The FathomII is the smoothest reels ive used in a long time, the drag system works flawlessly and is easy to adjust on the fly. I havn't met a fish to this day that the drag system can't beat. The level wind system is an added bonus, it allows you to fight a big fish while not having to worry about how the line is spooling back on the reel, and lays the line back evenly helping line flow off the reel much better. its a nice light powerhouse reel. The only complaint I could even think of is that they dont have a Fathom II with a 6:1 or higher speed gear ratio for throwing fast retrieve top water baits and yo yo jigs yet..'

This is my second Penn Fathom. I purchased both from Bass Pro.I bought the first one to take out in the gulf for red snapper fishing. I liked the way it worked so I bought another one for a second rod that I had. It is a smooth reel.
This is a our go-to reel for pulling tandem bucktail rigs (mojos). We use it with a line counter or marked braided line. Very powerful and we have caught hundreds of fish in it. We use this exclusively in our charter business - Long Island Fishing Charters.
I bought Penn fathom 2 30LWLH 6 months ago on amazon. During the second disassembly, I saw broken metal at the screw attachment points. There have never been such problems on any of their reels. I always serve them myself and could not create such an effort. The quality of the metal is at the level of the cheapest silumin. Wrote to Penn - no answer. We'll have to write reviews and attach photos wherever possible: YouTube, forums and shops. I apologize for the language - I use a translator.
Great reel for the price. I have a couple Penn Squall reels and one broke and I had to send it back to Penn for repairs (which they handled great at no charge). However, I wasn't sure how long it would take, so I bought the Fathom to replace it. The Fathom seems to be a step above the Squall. I will probably switch to the Fathom for future replacements. I'm just a casual fisherman, that enjoys going out once or maybe twice a week. I have about 15 rods and reels and they are all Penn. If I was a commercial fisherman, I might look at other brands, but Penn works great for my needs.
Product came BROKE!!! And I payed for expeditied shipping. Caused me to forfeit a tournament! They LAUGHED at me when I explained the situation. Owner ignored my requests to speak with him in regards to this!
Reel nice reel. Pun intended. Used 15LW with #50 braid and #20 mono top shot. Great smooth adjustable drag. Even with a level wind the reel cast well. Free spool is smooth. Used it bottom fishing and kelp fishing with live bait. No problem. Got a nice size Yellow tail on the same trip. Used a 9ft rod. No problem. It's nice to be able to pull on fish without having to lay the line back on the reel spool. Just plain fishing. By the way. Another reviewer complained that the reel had a bad design, the screw holes cracked or broke. That was caused by impact. The reel got hit or dropped causing the aluminum to crack or break. I always take my reels apart before I fill the spool. I degrease the bearings and add my own oil. Penn has a tendency of over greasing these reels. ... MoreReel nice reel. Pun intended. Penn has a tendency of over greasing these reels. The breaks are from the bottom impact. Most people would strip the treads before causing any damage seen in these pictures. Those guys are called Farmers, excuse makers and poor all around bad company.
Bought both the Fathom II 15LW and 20LW. for plug casting snook with large plugs and feathers. The drag is smooth plus you can add thumb pressure with ease. The 15LW’s comes with a paddle hand, that I like and ordered for the 20 LW and a older model 25LW. From deep jigging or trolling offshore to casting inshore theirs a Fathom model to fit the task. Looking now at the new low profiles with the different gear ratios.
