I purchased two Penn squalls this season (SQL50LW and SQL60LD) to replace my older Penn GTI reels used mainly for striped bass fishing. I have been very impressed with the reel performance but extremely disappointed with how both spools have held up after only one season. The spools quickly became corroded even with vigorously washing the reels after each saltwater use. I typically use Shimanno TLDs so I was a bit confused about sizing. The 60 squall is about the size of an TLD25 plus some. Great drag set up and lighter than t he TLDs. Overall a great reel for typical trolling. Wouldnot use this reel for high speed trolling. This reel has become one of our favorite go to set up for most of our fishing tactics offshore.

This is my second conventional casting reel. I started with the SQL15 star drag but have surpassed its abilities, so now I’m using the SQL30LD. I have been using conventional reels for surf fishing for almost two years now and I love them immensely. I wish I started using those years ago.The Penn Squall SQL30LD is a great conventional reel for surf fishing. I have it matched with a Penn Prevail 12’ Heavy Surf Casting Rod (PRESF2040C12). It took some practice to get used to not having the magnetic break if the SQL15 but in the end I can cast it much farther. I can now cast further than ever. Controlling the spool to prevent backlash can cause burns, at least in the beginning while you are learning.I highly recommend this reel and the rod I have it mounted on. I think another one is in my future.

While fishing for sand bar sharks on a medium set up, an unexpected and very large thresher shark hit. I knew it was a fish much larger than I’d expected, and knew I was in for a battle. Although I wouldn’t intentionally target large (350lb plus) sharks with this reel, it performed very well. I estimate this fish, which I successfully landed boat side 2 hours later (and released), to be about 400lbs. Due to their tails, threshers are hard to turn and it’s a battle of feet and inches. This Penn Squall 60 had enough drag to handle this brute, and when it was all said and done I was very impressed with the performance from it. I’d absolutely buy another one and recommend this reel to anyone.
Bought a 60 then 30. These are Hybrids between casting Baitcaster And a Trolling Reel. Super Machines for grind. Brake is breeze to click to strike from free spool. For money and quality it's Good to be Penn
I was drifting for Halibut and got snagged. I passed my 5 year old pole and reel to the deck hand. After one minute of trying to shake it free he cranked the drag closed. The monofiliment line was only 30 pound and suddenly the reel gave and the gearing exploded. The level wind would not re-align and the reel would not reel and gave a sickening grinding sound.
This setup retails for $260 just about everywhere online and in-store. Happened to do a search and it came up at Walmart for $215. Confirmed it was the same make/model I was looking for and ordered right away.Arrived sonnet than estimated and in good condition. I will say though that the packing was sub-par for a fishing rod and had zero padding in the box, so it was dumb luck that it arrived undamaged.Would order this again and the price was excellent.
Had been chasing a left hand overhead for ages then contacted otto's who had the squall in stock and at great value. The real is one of the cheapest in the range but boast many features of the more expensive models including stopping power. Feels solid and retrieves and drags smoothly. For someone who rarely uses overheads and trolls very occasionally it meets my needs without breaking the bank!
I purchased four of the Squall 40 and one of the Squall 60, rels to replace my old Penn Senator 113H and 114H reels. I fish halibut primarily, here in Alaska and want to say the Squall LD reels have been wonderful to use. While I am not a charter boat operator, I fish most of June and pretty much every weekend in July and August. I have friends that I take out, with various levels of fishing experience. With the lever drag so easy to set, even my less experienced anglers can get the drag back to where it needs to be. The reels have held up wonderfully so far this year. We have caught halibut over 100 pounds on multiple occasions. I have asked my anglers how they like the reel. All of them have told me that they really liked the reels. I was lucky to spend some time at my families condo from December 12th-26th in ft Lauderdale. My dad had got a 24ft walk around fishing boat with a 250 Yamaha 4 stroke. I am not very experienced in the ocean on anything except a raft when I am at the beach. This reel was a combo deal I found when I purchased my first two rods for going out. My first trip out I was with a younger guy who moved to florida next to my parents condo. He cali fished for everything, they didnt troll just float fish out in cali he said. We both decided on our type of fishing lure we were getting and tried out luck on the sea. We caught a bonita that was not any challenge for the 50lbs squall I have. It was my turn to bring one in and I got a 4lbs black fin that I wanted to let go until I saw what happen. We were not only trollling with the plug we had the blackfin on also, most people think a shark is what happened. It was the first of many lesson the ocean is teaching me.Check the rod tip and pull the line occasionally or your first eating fish will be beaten to death by the waves. I bled it and it was too late the meat was mush with some weird big blood line through it. I am not someone who has been out before without a guide. I felt bad and hope the next time I can get a tuna to eat. We found a 8ft 2x4 and it was where the day ended. We pulled trolled around the same 2x4 for a couple hours and we did good 7 maui maui on the squall a PB and first sail fish that I guess counts, I never gafted after I reeled it in my buddy wanted me to do it since he was gafting the maui, I needed a longer gaft 4ft wasnt enough for that fish and I stuck it, it started shaky rapid and I lost my grip, we almost got it again as it side swam in a semi circle, it is now in the ocean with my gaft, ( lesson never use a small gaft wear gloves, dont take the lure out its mouth before you gaft it/dont hook the hook with gaft then pull, unless it is being released) a bonita and a black fin. The other rod was not hit because of the lure we had on it. Penn squall 50 with penn rod combo sold together is what I would call the magic stick, definetly the luckiest day for beginners to have that rod. 40lbs mono, 65lbs mono leader and a lot of luck for the billfish not cutting the line. I will guide anyone who wants to pay for gas and Appalachian cigars, inexperienced is my down fall practice makes perfect and I thank god for the beautiful rod and reel combo penn blessed to make. Penn sponsor someone who is not the best. I can go to florida any time and fish in the ocean, I got skunked the next 4 times and had to come home. We caught one fish each of those 4 times and I was not on the rod that turn. I am trying to learn to drive that sucker.
