Brilliant New Option!

I have only had the WAR20N for a week, but it is a brilliant new option for offshore fishermen on a tight budget! Using the newer, lighter, narrow spool design so it sits easily on the rod and handles braided lines beautifully, casts easily, with a fast retrieve of 34 inches of line per handle turn making it great for jigs. And less than a hundred bucks! This one is a complete game-changer.

I no longer have to "lob" a big bait , but can actually cast it quite far when needed with a Blugill or carp as bait with up to a 6oz egg sinker on a 7'6" Ugly StickTiger rod or Big Cat Fever 7'6" Heavy Rod....Very Very nice !I use 50lb Mono from Walmart and it comes in a 150yd spool for $1.96. The spool fills my Penn 320GTI reels and 320GT2 reels right to capacity , however on this reel it fills it to just over full capacity and I need to remove about 25'-30' of line for it to be just right.Since there is no Casting control I simply snug down the spool tensioner and feather the spool with my thumb to keep birdsnests to a bare minimum when casting (takes Practice).Since there is no levelwind its necessary to thumb the line on the spool while reeling in (Also takes some practice) but Im used to it and would rather have the added casting distance than the levelwind feature anyway.....PerfectConstruction is good , however my bait clicker is very tight switching it On and Off and it needed a bit of forcing a few times to get it to engage and disengage ok.It looks like a fairly well put together reel and unfortunately is no longer made in the USA and is manufactured in China. With our recent events the Made in China really puts me off.....other than that its a decent reel for what it is.Ive bought 4 of them total after ordering the first two and liking them so much. I feel quite confident they are a acceptable bargain reel for the 75-90 lb Cats Im targeting. If you want an upgrade from this reel get the Penn Squall 25N....casts even further and has more quality built in overall.Ok Penn....Bring Back the manufacturing to the USA !

Good reel for Southern California Yellowtail.

With the Warfare 30 Stardrag I can flyline a live squid, the spool is smooth and will easily feed the line at an even rate when free spooling into current. The reel will cast a tadys #9 iron jig and 3oz+ rubber swim baits. You can jig rockfish and halibut with it. It holds tons of braid. I back my braid with mono. Its exceptional for the price. The only thing I would change is a 25lb drag over a 15lb. Some of the bigger yellow tail rip the drag hard and sometimes 15lbs isn't enough to slow them down or keep em out rocks or kelp.

These are great reels for small tuna and medium sized yellowtail. I have caught tuna and yellowtail in #15 to #30 lbs no issue. I wish Penn make left handed reel for this model and add a little more drag to these reels. Overall, small decent reel.

These things are tanks. I've had then about a year and zero problems. Great drags, smooth retrieve. I really like that you don't have to flip the casting lever back when you begin your retrieve, it automatically resets with a turn or two of the handle. Priced right too!

I went cod fishing on a Charter Boat leaving from CT and fishing south of Block Island, RI. I rented a rod rather than bring my own & ended up with 6' medium heavy rod with a Penn Warfare 20N as the reel. It was spooled with what looked to be 30 to 50 lb mono and held 12 oz lead for drops. I used the reel all day and it worked really well. It retrieved in 100+ foot depths very quickly and I was even able to use the reel a day thumb it on drops with a neoprene glove on. Being that they were cod I really didn't any drag pulled out other than a bottom snag or two. I was so impressed with the little reel I ordered one a few days later for my boat. It is light weight and still has enough power to pull large syripers and blues next summer. Not for the beginner
5 November 2016

I just recently got into the surf cast fishing and I figured I create a rod and reel set. I paired this reel with the Penn prevail 11' foot rod. This set I had confirmed with A Penn sales rep. As for the reel, it's going to take some time for me to adjust to cranking in the line while using my thumb to spread the line over the reel. Not as easy as I thought. It's going to take some time to get use to this type of reel.

17 April 2016

I haven't fished with the reel yet but right out of the box the mounting hardware broke upon attaching the reel to a rod. I've always fished Penn reels and was surprised to find the screws snapped under the minimal pressure applied by the tiny wrench included in the package. They appeared to be a lesser alloy that was chrome plated and hollow. The reel itself appears to handle very precise as I've come to expect from Penn. Hopefully the inner components are of a sturdier and stainless variety.

Penn Warfare 30
24 December 2022

Bought this reel 8 years ago and fished the Long Island sound every season would good results. Lost reel and rod overboard. Set up two Lamiglass blue water rods with two new Penn warfares. The rivets holding the reel onto the seat popped on both reels in the first 30 days, landing average size fish for Long Island sound. Both required out of pocket costs and timely return process to a repair dealer for warranty work. As such I just replaced the rivets with stainless hardware. Reels otherwise have functioned ok, but are developing slop in the handles after only one season. Would not recommend, should have bit the bullet and bought an American made and warrantied Avet to begin with.

I purchased this reel for rockfishing. Great line capacity. Pulled up limits of rock fish on 1/2 day trip. Strongly recommend this reel for any fishing arsenal. Great build, looks good.
