This is one of the least expensive lenses made by Pentax for their DSLR cameras, yet it's one of the most useful. Optically, it would score an 8 on the traditional 10-point scale. Slight barrel distortion is present at 18mm, but that clears up as you zoom to the higher settings. It is not the sharpest lens available, but for the money, it's plenty good. It is not a macro lens, but amazingly, it can focus down to about 10 inches, and at 55mm gives near macro results for small object photography. Used on the K-5 or the newer K-3, there is plenty of room in their large images to make a 100% crop that's the equivalent of macro shots with lesser cameras. It's well built with metal bayonet surfaces, and is weather resistant to match the weather resistant qualities of such ... No need to worry about going out in inclement weather with it. It has a useful zoom range of 18-55mm, which in 35mm film terms, is equivalent to 27 to 82.5 mm; wide-angle to medium telephoto, using Pentax's 1.5X sensors. This lens is often packed with new Pentax cameras as a kit lens, and is an excellent choice for all-around use. Among kit lenses, it's a standout and is hard to beat for the money.

Very happy with this purchase for a fantastic used K20d I purchased with it. For pretty much a "kit" lens the construction is exceptional. Zoom is positive with no creep. Manual focusing is very fast to register with camera but the ring motion is a bit slippery, not as positive as the zoom. Both rings have a superb rubber texture and though the focus ring is a little small it is NOT tiny. Zoom ring size is great. Non-rotating ring is good to have. Gasket on lens mount appears durable and does not interfere with mounting of lens. Pictures are sharp enough, still have more work on camera setup so it might be even better. Wish the lens was a little faster but is normal for a kit-type lens. Love that it is weather resistant. Only kit lens that makes sense to use with a ... Hood is superb quality, has built in window, for use with polarizing filters with a lever, that fits so well you can't even see the seam!Very happy especially when the price is figured in. Not many dust and moisture resistant lenses can be had for this low of a price and with this build quality. Would be a 5 star, but I have sharper lenses, albeit at a SIGNIFICANTLY higher cost!

Best for basic everyday shooting with start with 18mm that goes along to 55mm. Compact and lightweight. This is proper for beginner or minimalist when you travel when you go offside but you will get started with F3.5 at 18mm and end at F5.6 at 55mm on this lens. If you're want to skip this lens you can get with DA 35mm f2.4 that match for Landscape that will specific for another type event.

I am a semi-professional photographer that shoots on a K-5IIs. Up to this point, I've solely shot prime lenses (with this camera), as I've never wanted to sacrifice image quality. I bought this lens to use on a wedding as a back-up lens, and never ended up taking it off my camera body. This lens should not be regarded as a kit lens, it easily out performs every kit lens I've ever used. The image quality is superb, and there doesn't seem to be any loss of quality, sharpness, or aberration issues throughout the zoom range. It is a top-performing lens-- especially for the cost. I haven't really tested the weather resistance, as I live in California, but I did manage to take it out on a sunset shoot that got some light rain, and the camera and lens were both fine. If I ... I haven't really tested the weather resistance, as I live in California, but I did manage to take it out on a sunset shoot that got some light rain, and the camera and lens were both fine. If I were to comment on a downside (bear in mind, it would be a bit of a stretch), it would be that the auto-focus hits about 95% of the time, which I could also say about every auto-focus lens I ever used. Through the wedding, I never actually missed a shot due to the auto-focus, but there were some shots that it focused on the preacher, instead of the bride and groom-- Although on the plus side, it did that every time without the focus assist light (which is fantastic, but also due to the K-5IIs' chart-toping low-light focusing ability). All in all, this lens is spectacular. It isn't as sharp as my legacy primes, but honestly, if you shoot in RAW and add a touch of sharnpess in post, you'd never know the difference. If you're an aspiring enthusiast, enthusiast, novice, or even pro, you could definitely make use of this lens. It may not be the sharpest or quickest zoom lens Pentax has to offer, but it may very well be the best bang for the buck. I'd highly recommend this lens.
I had a couple of Pentax kit lenses prior to buying my K70. These worked well enough, but I fancied something to do the 24mp of the K70 justice and save the need for carrying 2 lenses. My Sigma 24-70 partly fits the bill, but it doesn't go quite wide enough for landscapes and is just too bulky for carrying around all day. The Pentax 18-135 ticks all these boxed, and is remarkably compact, whilst giving great image quality, all with the bonus of being WR...so getting caught in a shower shouldn't be a major trauma. This lens could rapidly find itself being my go to kit.
I have been using Pentax equipment for about 50 years. For most of that time, I used Kodachrome film and projected my slides on a 40 or 50 in. screen. Since 2005, I have converted to digital and view my pictures primarily on a 50 in. HD Plasma TV set. I have always enjoyed Pentax equipment because of their small size, light weight and overall quality. I have never had a problem with any of my cameras or lenses. I recently purchased a K5 body to complement the istDS + DA18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL lens I have been using for the past seven years. When my wife decided she was going to use that camera and lens, I had to find a general purpose lens to tack on to the K5. I recently purchased a K5 body to complement the istDS + DA18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL lens I have been using for the past seven years. When my wife decided she was going to use that camera and lens, I had to find a general purpose lens to tack on to the K5. I considered a number of other Pentax zoom lenses but finaly settled on this one because I was happy with the one which came with the istDS and this one promised to be just as good if not better plus it is weather resistant. It may not be the sharpest or fastest zoom available but, used in the medium focal lenghts (24-45mm) and apertures (F5.6-F11), it produces sharp, contrasty images with minimal detectable distortion. The best lens I currently own is a Pentax-M 50mm f1.7. It can take sharper pictures than the zoom lens but, when viewed on an HD TV screen some 8 - 10 feet away, I cannot see any difference. I am also willing to trade some speed for portability. With the ability to ratchet up ISO value and still have acceptable image quality, I am not sure fast lenses are as much of a necessity as they used to be. Granted, I am not in the business of taking test chart pictures and counting resulting pixels, but for the asking price this lens more than meets my needs and expectations. For more critical work, I have a number of excellent M series prime lenses I can always fall back on.
Bought this lens for near field of musicians performing indoors in low light. Since they dont stand still much, getting a clear shot can be frustrating. This lens paired to the K70 body is amazing. Very clear & clean files that often dont need post processing. Compliments are many from the musicians Ive photographed in numerous lighting situations found at various local venues. Im very pleased with my setup and advise anyone to check it out for themselves.
Optically, yeah, it's mostly just a kit lens, and performs like it. Other lenses will be sharper and faster. However, this has two very nice things going for it.First is weather resistance. Getting caught in a light drizzle without panic is a very nice feature. Second is the close focus capacities. It can focus down to 25cm, with a maximum of 0.34 magnification. That's still far from macro, but it's pretty handy.I've even thrown it on an AF film Pentax, and haven't noticed vignetting in the 45-55mm range once stopped down to f8 or so. To be sure, it won't be usable wider than that. For what this is (an affordable kit-style lens), it's well built and ticks a lot of boxes.
I was pleased to find the lens available, Not available in Australia at the moment. Major importer can't give a date if and when they would be available. Thanks B&H.also the delivery was only 9 day'sKen
This lens really is a multifunctional, general purpose lens. It is the WR model so you already know it is durable, but in addition, both macro and wide angle shots appear clear with minimal edge distortion. Colors are vivid, and the shots are amazing. I recommend this to anyone in need of a tough, daily, not too expensive lense.
