Been using this since it arrived just before Christmas. I have taken it on a couple of cold-weather, weekend backpacking trips through the Ozarks and used it to do some work in my unlit attic. The battery seems to hold up well as long as you keep it warm. On my first backpacking trip I kept the headlamp in an exterior pack pocket and the battery lasted little more than a single evening-- so a little less than 2 hours. Fortunately, I have a GoalZero battery pack that I bring along with me and was able to recharge. I suspected that the freezing temps probably sapped the charge so the next day I carried the lamp in my pocket to keep it warm and the battery lasted much longer. Excellent Headlamp. Petzl hit it out of the park with this one for an "outdoor" or "work around the house" headlamp. Features I thought were unnecessary make this really convenient. The 600 lumens is excellent for wide area illumination, just be careful not to blind anyone close up. Plenty of illumination for running, hiking, campsite work, working on the car, or around the house. However the higher illumination definitely drains the batter quicker, but it's nice to have when needed. I find the glow in the dark lens actually pretty handy when looking for it in the tent or in a pack and you are digging around. This headlamp checks all the boxes - easy to adjust, comfortable, easy to use, bright light with multiple settings, long battery life, and rechargeable. I live in Minnesota so in the winter it's pretty much dark out both before and after work, so it gets quite a bit of use then between my outdoor runs and daily dog walks. For runs, it is very lightweight (so no bouncing or slipping) and is able to stay on over a beanie with no issues. You can also remove the band and wash it if it gets dirty from all the sweat.I have also brought it on several camping trips, including just on a long backpacking trip in Patagonia and it worked flawlessly. I own a Petzl headlamp and have loved it, purchased two years ago. I bought this new one for my brother and was extremely disappointed with the newer design after testing it. The first thing I noticed was the reduced range of motion for the light. I like to point the light down to the ground or at my hands when I'm reading something and this newer model has such a limited range of motion that it can't be pointed down that far. That alone was enough for me to want to return this but then I attempted to open up the battery compartment and couldn't believe how hard it was to open. I literally had to go get a flat head screw driver to pry it open. Absolutely unusable out in the wilderness, especially if you had gloves on. A decent headlamp that allows rechargeable and standard AAA batteries.It only has three fixed brightness levels. Opening the battery compartment is hard and not intuitive; have to completely flip the body and then pull on a very stiff tab. Feels like it might break and would be hard to do with gloves on. The battery cover is marginally waterproof. The battery level is indicated by green-red-yellow led when turned on. Battery capacity is lower than other rechargeables.BD Storm is better in most respects. Prefer the latch mechanism (mine is the revised version and has not failed). Power remaining indicator has five levels. Rechargeable battery is 1500 vs 1250 in Petzyl. Slight negative is that it has a separate charging cradle (but pretty small). Fully waterproof.

It’s one of the most powerful headlamps I’ve owned, and it gives the user the choice between alkaline (3x AAA) or a removeable/rechargeable (micro USB input) “CORE” battery. I’ve found the battery life to be very close to what Petzl claims, although I found the alkaline batteries to last longer than the rechargeable battery. That is a fine tradeoff for me because charging is very fast (~1-1.5 hrs maybe?), you save money on extra batteries, and it’s obviously much less wasteful. As I mentioned, the light is very strong on the brightest of the three white light settings (there are also red and flashing settings). I’m not an expert on every available choice on the market in regards to lumens, but the brightest setting is more than enough for all of my use cases and guessing the majority of people. I’ve used it many times in rain and snowy/wet mixed precip and so far, I’ve been really impressed with the build quality. I’m really enjoying this headlamp and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a new lamp with this form factor, strength, and the utility to switch between a rechargeable lipo and alkaline batteries.

I played around with it for awhile, learning all the functions, then went for a hike with it on old Mt. Rail trails,(about 6.5 miles), in the Mon. National Forest. After reaching the top of the Mt. I timed it so I could walk back in the dark. The light functions very well, and the middle setting was adequate for most of my needs. When I wanted to see further, the highest setting at 600 lumens was comforting, and lit my rout with bright light. Keeping in mind that their was about 1" of snow on the ground. When in the market for a new headlamp you typically want three things: 1) a comfortable fit, 2) a bright light, and 3) a long battery life. I can say after testing this on runs in the rain, long walks in the winter with my dog, and hiking in the mountains. Most surprisingly is that it was awesome to run with.First, it fits well and isn't too tight, and has a pivot on the light so that it can be pointed towards the trail. I can say after testing this on runs in the rain, long walks in the winter with my dog, and hiking in the mountains. Most surprisingly is that it was awesome to run with.First, it fits well and isn't too tight, and has a pivot on the light so that it can be pointed towards the trail. I've tried several other headlamps and found this one very comfortable, even without a third strap going over your head.Second, this light is amazingly bright. I had an older (5 years or more) headlamp is was audibly shocked at how much brighter this head lamp was. It is both wide and far reaching which is great for running, hiking, and finding things around camp. It also has options for a red light for late-night reading without alerting your partner.Lastly, it does have a great battery life. I've used this for at least a few hours of continuous, bright light. I'm sure it could go much further at the medium or dimmest setting. But it's nice in this day and age to have a rechargeable, sustainable battery and still have the ability to bring along spares as a backup.Honestly I have nothing bad to say about this headlamp. It's great for running, hiking, putting up lights in your basements, and camping. Go for it!
This will be my headlamp of choice going forward. I've had the opportunity to test it both night backcountry and cross-country skiing and the visibility it provides is excellent. I was previously using a Black Diamond Spot, and the Petzl Actik Core is considerably brighter and casts a wider beam on its highest setting which is essential for not skiing into trees. I did a test in the dark with my partner and it was no contest which was brighter. I also really appreciate that I can use the rechargeable battery but then switch to AAA's when it runs out which makes it more versatile. Also the phosphorescent glow would help me find it in my pack and/or change the batteries if it dies mid use, however I'm not sure how long that would last and wasn't able to get a read on ... MoreThis will be my headlamp of choice going forward. In terms of weight it is comparable to my Spot and the light itself is mildly bulkier although the band is really easily adjustable which is good for switching from on helmet going downhill to on head going up. The locking mechanism prevented it from accidentally turning on in my pack and switching between the various settings was very easy. One more cool thing, it rotates 360 degrees on its hinge so provides way better versatility in terms of light angle than other lights I used which only operated on a hinge. In terms of battery life it has gone fine for 3 hours at a time on the very bright setting on the rechargeable battery and I haven't used it longer than that with out recharging at this point. Overall it is a fantastic headlamp and I really can't come up with any negatives. I look forward to using it on future trips.
