A comparison between the Tikka 350 and my old Energizer Vision 300 is the best review I could do here. Quick summary: buy the Petzl if you have to have a hard core climbing brand with minimalist styling, buy the Energizer if you want something easier to use at half the price. The Petzl Tikka 350 (Lumens) Headlamp is a premium product in terms of cost, form, fit & finish, and tech styling. Sometimes you turn it off when you want to increase the brightness or switch to red, and sometimes it wouldn't turn on (pressing too long? too short?). By comparison, the Energizer with two buttons is 100% simple and repeatable - press the on/off labelled button to control the white light, press the 2nd button to cycle through red, flashing red, green options. Petzl could have programmed the single button to cycle linearly through each of it's options. While they did include two useful features, a lock to prevent draining the batteries, and battery indicator, the usability issue was still a deal breaker for me. A headlamp is frequently used at the end of a long tiring day and should never be this hard to use!

The Petzl Tikka is a nice headlamp that has all of the premium Petzl features for a budget price. The battery cover has molded PVC that pairs it with the light when removed to keep you from losing it. The light has red and white lighting with the white lighting having 3 different levels of intensity and the red having one and a strobe feature. I would recommend this headlamp for recreational purposes only, as the beams of the two lights are not focused enough to see more than 5 years. Overall, nice headlamp!

I bought this after using the tikka for 8 years or so. My old one still works perfectly after being beat to hell and back and even put through the washer and dryer, but for $25 I figured I’d toss it in my cart to meet free shipping on the cabelas website. This one is actually as bright (250 lumens) as my old tikka, and seems every bit as durable. The only downside is it doesn’t have the red light but I don’t use that anyways since I am red/green colourblind so it’s a non issue for me. If you want the red light spring for the tikka, but can’t say enough how happy I’ve been with my almost decade old petzl as well as my new one so far. Even comes with 3 Duracell AAA batteries.

I’ve tried several different styles of headlamps over the years with our scout troop. This headlamp cost a little more than what I was used to, but I didn’t realize how much the difference could be. The light beam is consistently good, and the strap is amazing compared to what I am used to. I now use my headlamps while running after dark. I am used to either having to adjust the strap so tight that it gives me a headache or else it ends up slipping down while I’m running. This strap is super easy to adjust, and it’s elasticity is perfect where is supportive, but not super tight. Great product!!
I love how versatile and durable this lamp is; variety of brightness settings ranging from didn’t-pack-more-batteries sim to blind-the-sun bright, as well as a red mode that’s great for late-night use without disturbing fellow campers. The included stuff sack doubles as a diffuser, allowing the lamp to be used as a hanging, handheld or tabletop (if you get creative) camp lantern. This lamp is very light and compact, and includes it’s own stuff sack as mentioned, making it a great candidate for backpacking. Mine has withstood two not-so-short drops so far and shows no signs of wear. The only con I’ve yet to find with this lamp is the instructions included; I initially found them a little sparse but ultimately figured out all modes from some quick fiddling.
Overall I find this light pretty average. For the price I find it rather poor to be frank. At this price point the rechargeable core should COME WITH the headlamp, or the price should be lower. The rechargeable functionality is what drew me to this lamp, but I've no idea how that feature fairs because I wasn't about to pay more to find out. That aside, the headlamp is fine. The adjustment is nice. It is lightweight and waterproofing seems good. The glow-in-the-dark ring is perhaps my FAVORITE feature. Very surprising and nice addition. But beyond this, I've a couple other lamps that are brighter and lighter which cost a fraction of this Petzl. Had the Core come with it I'd be happier. As it stands, it's a OK light that I wouldn't buy again at asking price.
I am a long distance hiker, so first impression is the headlamp is a little heavy. It’s important to read the box directions, and the paper directions. One button area for on/off is simple. Operation is a little awkward when switching from white to red. Didn’t realize there was a lock feature and so Initially I thought the batteries were dead, but it turns out headlamp was locked. White and red lights are bright and has a good range while you’re walking through a campground or on trails. Like the glow in the dark feature!
Whereas my knees won’t allow me to do any more 70 mile backpacking trips, all my gear gets used daily in general life. I liked this headlamp so much that I bought a spare for me and another as a gift.I unfortunately had to assume the responsibility of walking the dog due to wife’s injury, having tools make life enjoyable. I can now walk her at night without having to carry a flashlight to find her waste. Also always illuminated where I walk or look. I keep it on low so as to not destroy my night vision. It really comes in handy during power outages as it frees my hands up. Great also in tight quarters and under sinks too. I keep my spare in the car as nothing worse than trying to fix something at night with a flashlight.
Got this headlamp as a replacement for my old headlamp that had ceased to work and am glad I did. Very simple to use with the large single button operation and the sequencing of the button pushes is intuitive to learn. Possibly my favorite addition is the glow ring that makes finding your headlamp in the pitch dark a simply task. No more blindly rummaging around to find it at night. Also like the inclusion of the the storage bag that doubles as a light diffuser turning your headlamp into a more functional lantern when needed. The strap is comfortable and the design of the rotation is nice. With the mount points being on the side it means that when the light is rotated down it doesn't become a lever with the weight hanging away from your head, a small thing but ... It also means that the light can be angled slightly upward unlike the bottom hinge design. So far have seen good battery life. Also like the possibility of upgrading to the rechargeable battery in the future.
First off. Stop leaving batteries in your electronics! Whether it is this or anything else. Batteries may leak when you leave them in without use! Heck you should be making sure to use and charge rechargeable units during long storage.I bought mine 1 year ago.I have left batteries in my unit for the last few months because I periodically use it and check it.I love the ability to use a rechargeable battery pack. I don't want to be constantly buying batteries but I also recognize that if I'm out long enough, I love the ability to be able to, rather than take charge from my banks. The 250 is pretty bright if you're using it to walk in the dark. Too bright if you're near a person. That's where the red light on another unit would be helpful. It's not going to be ... MoreFirst off. Stop leaving batteries in your electronics! But if I have my hands full or the path isn't treacherous the light is good.4 stars because it is good but there are more features that I would see on it.
