I bought this after using the tikka for 8 years or so. My old one still works perfectly after being beat to hell and back and even put through the washer and dryer, but for $25 I figured I’d toss it in my cart to meet free shipping on the cabelas website. This one is actually as bright (250 lumens) as my old tikka, and seems every bit as durable. The only downside is it doesn’t have the red light but I don’t use that anyways since I am red/green colourblind so it’s a non issue for me. If you want the red light spring for the tikka, but can’t say enough how happy I’ve been with my almost decade old petzl as well as my new one so far. Even comes with 3 Duracell AAA batteries.

I plugged in the batteries and pressed the on button and was a little surprised how dim the light looked. After messing around with the light a bit, I realized the light had 3 brightness functions that are changed by pressing the power button once, twice, and three times. I was very surprised at how bright it was after I found the other 2 settings!

This is my second Tikkina, and both gave out after a couple of years. I don't know the average lifespan of a headlamp. I'm not particularly hard on them; they get used on maybe 6 or 7 trips a year, plus staying in my daypack for day hikes. I think the failure of the first one had to do with some corrosion (maybe it got wet?)... it started to take several attempts to get it to turn on and eventually just stopped. I'm unsure why the second one stopped working after about two years; no visible corrosion or damage. I liked them while they worked but will probably try something new this time around.
Very nice affordable light for the price. Been wanting to get one of these for awhile and grabbed one on sale. It’s small, light, and very easy to use. No fancy features just three settings and one button. Surprisingly the beam is awesome. No center hotspot that washes out whatever your looking at up close. Just a nice smooth even wall of light. Perfect for headlamp use instead of the typical flashlight type beam. Maybe someday I’ll add Petzls rechargeable battery but for now it will be my primary hiking light.
Perfect for my needs. Most often the lowest setting gives me enough light to see what I need to see. Easily switching to the next level is great. I like to work in my yard and garden in the evening and when it gets dark on me I LOVE that I can finish what I'm doing with this light. Comfortable, lightweight enough for a 3 AAA battery light. I don't use the rechargeable batteries so I can't comment on that. Regular batteries are last I g a long time the way I use this.
I was on a 21-mile backpacking trip when in the last 6 miles, it started hailing and raining. As we raced to the car on a paved road, we thought it'd be smart to use our headlights so cars could see us. I used this white headlight up front and my friend used his red-mode headlamp (not this model) in the rear. It worked well during the remainder of the hike, but when I got back, I realized that wouldn't turn off. The wiring was damaged due to the rain and was not letting me turn it off, so I removed the batteries.Recently, I tried putting the batteries back in and it works like a charm. Once the device had dried out enough, it went back to working.
I originally purchased this in July of 2020. It worked consistently for around 2 months before giving out. The batteries would need to be removed and readjusted with every use. I tried a dozen different batteries with no consistent success. After another month, despite never using it in wet conditions, moisture found its way inside and corroded the battery contacts. After cleaning those I can get it to work maybe 1 out of every 20 clicks of the button and it will not stay on.I wish I had saved my money and purchased a better headlamp. The Petzl Tikka and Zipka that I previously owned were far better products, switching to BD just proved to be a poor decision on my part.
Petzl generally makes good quality equipment. I use Petzl crampons and helmet for winter hiking on ice & snow. However, the Tikka headlamp has been disappointing. It worked okay intermittently the first year, but now it fails to operate half the time, even with fresh batteries. It could be that I got a lemon but, alas, it was purchased over a year ago, so I cannot return it. Good thing that I always carry a backup light for night hiking, otherwise, it would have been difficult to get down the mountain during a moonless night with a non-operating Tikka headlamp. My backup is a better model Petzl, which works fine, knock on cambium.
First off. Stop leaving batteries in your electronics! Whether it is this or anything else. Batteries may leak when you leave them in without use! Heck you should be making sure to use and charge rechargeable units during long storage.I bought mine 1 year ago.I have left batteries in my unit for the last few months because I periodically use it and check it.I love the ability to use a rechargeable battery pack. I don't want to be constantly buying batteries but I also recognize that if I'm out long enough, I love the ability to be able to, rather than take charge from my banks.The 250 is pretty bright if you're using it to walk in the dark.
