I smelled this perfume for the first time in a Sephora about a year ago (incidentally, also my first time smelling Glossier You!) I was ready to see what the hype was about, so I sprayed it anticipating something otherworldly and my first impression… was disgust. I did NOT understand why people liked it, it simultaneously grossed me out but also made me feel anxious? So I shelved it in my brain as “not for me.” Several months later, while shopping at Sephora for my birthday, I decided on a whim to spray a tester again. This time I was still unsure, but weirdly super intrigued. I bought a travel size, sprayed myself, and spent the rest of the day huffing my shirt. Now, Missing Person has pulled a complete 180 and is one of my FAVORITES in my collection (and I have a pretty sizable collection). I’ve gone through a travel spray, and am about a 3rd of the way through a full size bottle. Since I have so many perfumes, finishing even travel bottles is *super* rare, and repurchasing scents is almost unheard of. This fragrance is musky, lightly sweet, and smells like memories. I find it cozy and comforting, and yes, it does evoke a vague sense of someone you once knew, like a distant aunt. I wouldn’t recommend this as a blind buy, since some people are very off-put by the smell (likening it to grandmas, unwashed scalp, skin-in-a-gross way, etc). If you smell it once and don’t like it, maybe try sniffing it again next time you’re in a Sephora; you might be surprised! Overall I find it to be an inoffensive scent, with moderate longevity and low sillage, a great work or bedtime fragrance for musk lovers! I applied two sprays and neither me nor my husband smelled anything! Once we left and got back in the car is when we finally got the scent. It’s perfect for me, very light once it’s settled onto the skin and a great daily fragrance for me. The scent does disappear after a few hours, but I’m okay with that. I will say the ultimate dry down is not entirely unpleasant, basically a powdery musk. But it's not a particularly subtle musk and rather dated. More like something you would have found in a drug store for half the price in the 80's.Disappointing given how it was described.

A very comforting fragrance!
13 May 2024

The scent missing person by PHLUR encapsulates intimacy, hugs, rain watching with a lover and more. I am not sure how they bottled the feeling of missing someone and thinking back on memories but they did. Missing Person is a great scent for late nights at home when you need a bit of extra comfort. When i sniff it i just want to breathe in deeper and capture the entire essence of the scent. It tingles my senses in such an alluring way. It makes me feel relaxed and at ease. This fragrance is not too strong. It is one where you have to be close to capture the full effect. Not fruity or floral but just a nice skin like scent. The outer sleeve showcases a special moment between what I assume to be lovers. The bottle is a stunningly smooth see through orangey brown glass to match the sleeve. The silver reflective box is an elegant yet romantic touch. The white cap is textured with a stone-like feel that is a bit heavy. I am impressed that it is magnetic for easy removal. I notice that the atomizer is black like the painted lettering on the bottle. Overall, this perfume is comforting and gentle. I want to sniff it 24/7. I am constantly bringing my wrist up to my nose to smell it deeper. I feel this is a unisex fragrance that most people will enjoy. I like to layer it with a bergamot note so it feels as though my boyfriend had been with me.

An enigma in a bottle
19 May 2024

Missing Person is probably the most enigmatic perfume I’ve ever smelled. When I wear it, I feel like I’m in another person’s skin. I’ve never experienced a fragrance that smelled so.. human. It gives me uncanny valley vibes which sounds like a negative but I actually find that aspect of it more intriguing than off-putting. That said, on its own, it’s not a scent I would reach for often. If I had to try and describe the fragrance at its core, I would say it reminds me of my childhood when my mom would get me ready for a dance recital and the hairspray would get into my mouth. It smells like hairspray circa 1994 with musky, animalic notes. It’s a rather simple composition despite all of its intrigue which allows for some truly transformative experimentation. My favorite perfume oil to layer under it is santal-forward. If you have any sandalwood scents that you can pair with it, I would highly recommend doing so. Other notes I think might be complimentary include coconut, cashmere, fig.. pretty much anything creamy and warm. If you dislike the perfume outright or are a little on the fence about it like myself, do yourself a favor and try the layering technique. It truly grounds the perfume and gives it a more personal appeal, like the scent now belongs to you as opposed to someone else. You become the missing person as opposed to just wearing “Missing Person.”

What can I say about Missing Person that captures how I feel… it’s magical, comforting, sexy, subtle, mysterious, addicting. There is the tiniest breath of spice in it, a whole heap of nostalgia and plenty of amber that smells like it’s been warmed up in your hands. This smell is human and intoxicating. No flowers, no juicy fruits, no tobacco or lemon or any of those immediately identifiable notes.Alone, it stays close to the skin and has a pheromone effect. It warms up and threatens to become slightly sweet. But layered with something rosy or fruity, it’s an intensifier and brings an ambery warmth to a fruit or floral fragrance. I smelled probably 10 different samples at various locations and smelled NOTHING before I actually found the scent with a brand new demo. I'm not sure if the demos had been drained, refilled by water, or perhaps there was a poor batch. But if you can't smell anything from the sample, I say keep trying. This is a very lovely and unique scent, it applies seemingly strong but when it dries, it makes me think of golden hour in your bedroom with white sheets and your lover next to you. I truly love how deep and seductive it smells, and once in a while I like to mix it with something lighter and fruitier. I personally do not enjoy musky scents as they tend to be overpowering and makes me think of really old vintage products (think grandma), but I thoroughly enjoy this ... MoreI smelled probably 10 different samples at various locations and smelled NOTHING before I actually found the scent with a brand new demo. The top can actually twist off which can be bad if you didn't know and accidentally spill. The spray is kind of aggressive, I wish it gave a lighter and more delicate spray as I feel I've gone through the product a lot faster than some other of my perfumes at the same volume.

WASTE OF MONEY DON'T BUY

DO NOT PURCHASE FULL SIZE. After purchasing several travel-sized bottles of their perfumes, I purchased a full-size bottle of Missing Person, which I liked.Whatever is inside the full size bottle smells only of cheap alcohol swaps. My frined who was with me while i was trying to use it crinkled her nose and said it smelled like diluted ethanol. I had to spray multiple times over and over again over the same small skin area before it smelled anything remotely like what the perfume smelled like in the travel size bottle, and even then the smell of alcohol was absolutely overpowering, nothing like I'd ever experienced even with years-old perfume from any other perfume houses. It does not last more than half an hour even after spraying extremely, extremely heavily over both my skin and my clothes. It is a scam if i ever saw one. There must be a reason their website has no customer review section. This is not a brand that stands behind its products. Do not waste your money getting a full sized bottle from phlur, you will do better with diluted vodka, it feels unpleasant on your skin and smells like turned alcohol. Invest in actual perfumeries that take pride in their products, like fragonard or byredo. I have attached a photo of some of my perfumes, including the full-sized bottle of Missing Person as proof. I have never had such an unpleasant experience with any other product in my life. What a waste of $96.

I got a sample size of this with my last order. I will say it's an excellent work in perfumery: all skin musk and cashmere with a touch of blonde wood. It's very rare that a scent actually matches the description, but this one comes very close - it is a nude fragrance, very reminiscent of "the comforting embrace of skin-to-skin contact and the lingering scent of a loved one's presence. It's a tribute to the warmth and intimacy we cherish," just as the perfumer described. Unfortunately, the notes of bergamot and jasmine were completely absent for me. I found the longevity to be quite good - it was still strong after about an hour and a half, at which point I tried with alcohol swabs and hand soap to remove it, and it's still very detectable several hours later despite those efforts. One con for me is that it didn't transform at all during dry-down; that's good if you like the scent directly from the bottle, but not so good if you're hoping for complexity and enjoy the way a fragrance shifts subtly over time. Personally I think I would have liked it much more if those citrus/floral notes were present, but if you like blonde wood, musk, and skin-like scents, this one is certainly worth a try.
