Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum 70 CL

(1,276 reviews)

A blend of the company's oldest reserves, this rum is something else. Selected rums aged for long years in the Caribbean are painstakingly blended by our cellar master at Château de Bonbonnet then matured in small French oak casks for a further 12 to 18 months. Double aging gives the rum an incomparably round and creamy palate. The colour of old mahogany, Plantation XO 20th Anniversary reveals a nose with exotic notes of sugarcane, oaky vanilla and toasted coconut, enhanced by more complex aromas of cocoa, candied orange and cigar box. To be enjoyed slowly, with or without a cigar. This rum needs a cigar with lots of flavor, but also some balance. The Flor de las Antillas Toro (Nicaragua) makes a lovely paring, with its coffee bean notes, hearty wood and backing sweetness.

A Good but Overpriced Offering

This is a fine sipping rum - certainly not for mixing. The rum has an exceptional smell. Oak shines through along with vanilla and caramel. It really draws you into the glass and makes you want to dive in.Sadly, that is where the exceptional quality ends. This is a very smooth rum but it is incredibly dosed with sugar to the point that it is nearly too sweet. It is estimated there is a whopping 24g/L of sugar added to this which accounts for how smooth it is. The flavors are definitely there but heavily muted by the amount of sugar that is added and has a very thin finish. The tastes don't linger on your palate very long which is very sad for what is supposed to a rum from Barbados.I definitely see why people would like this if they're: a) new to rum and ... MoreThis is a fine sipping rum - certainly not for mixing. A lot of the cost is in the branding and the bottle. You can do just as well with something like Ron Pampero Anniversario (12g/L), Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 (20g/L), or Papa's Pilar Sherry Cask (24g/L) for $20+ less while still getting the same great flavors, smooth finish, and very sweet rum that this offers. If you have a chance to try it before you buy it - do it. It is worth a try if you are in the mood for a sugar bomb. If you are buying a bottle I would recommend an equal or superior product for less money. If you're looking specifically to get into rum from Barbados - this isn't it. Find another bottle. There is a lot of quality coming from Barbados but this isn't amongst the offerings (look to Doorly's 12, Mount Gay Black Barrel, Mount Gay Eclipse, or The Real McCoy rums for quality and affordability).

A Nice Rum to Pair with Cigar on Special Occasion!

Over the past two to three years, I've grown to love rum. I first found the "Better Than Captain Morgan" brands that I liked before stepping up to the "Top Shelf" stuff by finding Plantation 20th Anniversary Rum. Friends and family have enjoyed this drink's habit-forming dark smoothness (ice only, please!). For a "Only Special Occasion" rum pleasure drink, the cost is reasonable.

Amazing Rum and I don't even like sweet rum

I bought this mainly for my wife who prefers sweeter rums. She is a big fan of Papa's Pilar and Diplomatico Reserva. This Plantation XO is also on the sweeter side but has so much depth and complexity I realy enjoy it, neat, with a couple of ice cubes or in an Old Fashioned. It has a nose of warming spices, caramel, orange and vanilla with a wonderful flavor palette of toasted coconut, apricots, butterscotch and oak. Super long finish and incredibly smooth. This is right up there with pretty much any 12 year, XO or similar expression you can find and a value at the current price point.Highly reccomended!

Cloying
13 June 2022

I was really excited to finally get my hands on this bottle, and really enjoyed the first few sips. But by the time the bottle was getting near the end, it was hard to finish—not because I didn't want to deplete my supply, but because of its cloying sweetness. There's quite a lot of added sugar here, which also plays up the coconut-vanilla flavor profile. Yes, it's "smooth," so if that's what you're after be my guest. But you can add sugar (and color and possibly flavoring) to any sub-par distillate to round off its harsh edges. Better IMO to support rums that showcase the skill of the distillers and blenders, with honest age statements (don't let that big "20" on the label fool you), that don't rely on flashy packaging. A good bottle to try once, but not a great value, and a poor representation of aged Caribbean rum.

EXCESSIVE VANILLA/CARAMEL
7 March 2023

In making my decision, Jess from the Santa Clara store was really helpful. Ron Zacapa has always been a favorite of mine, but Jess offered some options. I choose to give this Plantation rum a try. Shame to blend; definitely a sipping rum. Yet the vanilla/caramel overtones are so intense that this tastes like a flavored rrum. Try it to see if you like it; flavor is in the tongue of the tastier. I'll return to Ron Zacapa.

Having Experimented With Many Rums
7 March 2023

My neighbor first introduced me to rum last Christmas when he brought over a bottle of the Gosling family reserve rum. I've tasted at least 10 rums with a price tag that is within my pain threshold of $80. The best wine to enjoy is Plantation 20th! Do not add cola to this, please!

My preferred distillery is Plantation at the Moment.
7 March 2023

This smooth sipper with hints of toasted coconut and marshmallow that I really enjoy. I prefer mine straight up or on the rocks, as is customary. When I want to spoil myself after a challenging day, I always turn to this. As long as they keep their 20th Anniversary Rum available, I will continue to purchase it.

Nice Rum
7 June 2023

The Plantation XO 20th Anniversary offers a clear, red amber color and presents long legs indicative of its quality. On the nose, it exhibits dominant notes of oak and butterscotch, subtly complemented by cream and banana foster. The palate reveals a harmonious blend of cream, spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, brown sugar, and a slight hint of citrus, encased in a full, smooth texture. A medium finish follows, leaving a pleasant trail of creamy butterscotch that gently transitions into a soft buttered banana note. However, some might find it lacking in surprising elements or an enduring complexity.Overall Score: 4.31/5

No one is superior to this.
7 March 2023

This was a thoughtful birthday gift from my wife, who did me proud. It's the rum I prefer. My only problem is that I consume it too quickly, and at $50, it is expensive. Although I've also created wonderful mai tais with it, this is my go-to cocktail for on the rocks. My sole monthly vice would be a dumbed-down bottle that cost $10–$15 less.
