Beautiful cinematic experience in a game

I rarely get to play video games, but I am glad I took the time to buy and play this one. I bought the standard ps4 directors cut for around $40. It’s worth twice that in my opinion. It’s hard to imagine this game looking better than it does on my console. The load time is minimal, and it lags very rarely. While some of the side missions can get repetitive, there is always some type of reward that makes it worth it. The main storyline is rock solid and beautifully laid out. The acting is top notch and open world is gorgeous. I enjoyed the dlc Iki island expansion also, which delves deeper into the main characters history, and comes with cool new gear and abilities. If you like Assassin’s Creed, but are looking for something with less of a grind, go with this game. ...Β MoreI rarely get to play video games, but I am glad I took the time to buy and play this one. You're guided by the wind. At first I didn't like it but now it's second nature. There's also little details that if you aren't looking you'll miss. Like ants on trees, lighting actually striking trees, little crabs scurrying and burrowing into the sand and leaves and dirt/pebbles kicking up as you walk. It's impressive and helps sell the immersion so much more. Also being able to go into any building is nice. Loved this ...Β MoreI'm about 25 hours in and it gets even better! Unfortunately, I think my first impression was closer to the truth than the euphoric response seen elsewhere online as Ghost Of Tsushima has many attributes that I love but is ultimately brought low by excessively generic design. On the positive side the combat is genuinely stellar as a result of great flow, mechanics, and controls always ensuring that the various fights and duels were a good time. Furthermore, the graphics and art style are absolutely phenomenal capturing the era of feudal Japan beautifully and somehow feeling like a next gen title on the PS4. The next crippling flaw is that the quest design is atrocious with many of the worst design choices from the early Assassin's Creed games making frequent appearances like brainless tracking missions, tailing missions, and forced stealth sections. Finally, the narrative is a mixed bag with great elements (a surprisingly great ending), decent elements (characters), and weak elements (contrivances & weak themes) all being present i nearly equal measure. 3.5/5

Playstation's answer to Breath of the Wild

I previously saw it explained as the Playstation equivalent of Breath of the Wild, and I must agree its fair statement. Obviously differences in graphic style and bloodplay, but similar in scope, the scale of the environment, combat options, and other features. The story is quite good and engaging. It has multiple levels of difficulty ranging from easy, with video-game likeness of being able to be stabbed and sliced multiple times before dying, to realistically difficult where a single sword strike is lethal. The range of weapons and combat style keeps for an interesting game, developing new methods as it progresses. It has multiple levels of difficulty ranging from easy, with video-game likeness of being able to be stabbed and sliced multiple times before dying, to realistically difficult where a single sword strike is lethal. The range of weapons and combat style keeps for an interesting game, developing new methods as it progresses. In most encounters, on lower levels of difficulty you can either be sneaky and take out enemies silently like a ninja, or be gung-ho and attack the enemy head-on: letting the player decide how to approach an objective. The game has two really nice environmental touches. First, the wind will blow leaves and debris in the direction of your current objective, a subtle method of providing a navigation guide. Secondly, when the hero Jin obtains enough consecutive kills to activate a powerful mode for a short time, it sounds like thunder crashes for each attack made. The incorporation of ancient Japanese history and culture is another wonderful touch. While not perfectly historically accurate in many respects, it is close enough to appreciate. (It is my understanding that the Japanese version is more accurate in relation to the poetry, as the form of haiku presented in the English version was only developed at a later time.)I really enjoyed almost every aspect about the game aside from the constant need to go back and forth between distant objectives. The game gives a fast-warp capability, which helps accomplish this quickly, but its needed far too often (to the pint of being abusive) and breaks realism. At least Breath of the Wild tries to justify it as ancient technology - in Ghost of Tsushima it just happens with no explanation.

[Rewarded Review] A lot of hype
2 May 2023

There was a lot of hype and praise for this game, so I blindly bought it when it was on sale.Personally, it didn't hook me in like other games like God of War or Spider-Man - those games are 5 stars for me.I feel the enemy A.I is dumb and not highly intelligent/or have natural human movements, like you see in the enemies for Spider-Man. The characters move kind of clunky too.I mean, I think most games are just similar and just reskinned for different themes, like Batman Arkham Knight, or even Mad Max. I actually enjoyed Mad Max (underrated game) more than this game.If you love Samurai themes, then I guess you will instantly love this game. The black and white Kurosawa theme mode is pretty cool addition.

[Rewarded Review] Able to upgrade to the PS5 version for $20
4 January 2024

Saved money over buying the PS5 version. This version is AMAZING visually on the PS4 or PS4 Pro. But install to your PS5, and received an on screen offer to upgrade to the PS5 version for $20. So with the clearance sale of $21.99, I saved $20 over buying the PS5 version disk. (Note: all these Ps4 disk upgrades require you to keep the dish and insert the disk to play the game. I mark mine with a sticky note under the plastic sleeve. I don't want to trade off a PS4 game that I need to play the PS5 version.) A great story and incredible PS5 improvements - haptic feedback and wind blowing through the controller speaker, etc. very happy with my purchase.

[Rewarded Review] Fantastic Graphics, Cool Story, Fun Game Play
28 August 2023

This game is fantastic. The graphics are super cool. The game play is fun and unique. I love open-world games, and this keeps the areas challenging enough that you won't get bored with all of the side quests. I really enjoyed the different fighting styles that you have to change up for different opponents, and the story kept you engaged until the end. Highly recommended if you like open-world games. In my opinion, it is not the best game in the genre, but it is definitely worth playing once you get through the higher-rated games and are looking for something new.

Great title game mechanics. The animation is bar none other than TLOU2 but since they both are PS exclusives I'd be splitting hairs. The art direction is beautiful! From bamboo leaves to lotus blossoms spinning in the wind it's an incredible site to behold. In fact the island of Tsushima is the most detailed open world I've seen. HZD and Wild Hunt are in the conversation though. Speaking of looks the graphics are the best I've seen other than TLOU2. I can't believe this is running on my Pro. The checkerboard rendering is better than even the most cutting edge 4K HDR rig. The HDR is some of the best I've seen implemented into a game. It literally takes my breath away. I find myself just exploring because of its beauty. I've been playing since launch and I'm still ...Β MoreGreat title game mechanics. This game is average at best. The game is pretty good looking and has great music. Although it isn't the best looking PlayStation game it's art style really helps it.The story is a mixed bag unfortunately. The relationship between Jin Sakai (the main character) and his uncle (Lord Shimura) is the best part of the story. They differ on their views of how to deal the Mongols during the invasion of their homeland. Jin supports using dishonorable (Ghost combat) methods of warfare while Lord Shimura, being a Samurai, prefers only that which is considered honorable in the Samurai code. The rest of the side characters are pretty forgettable with some moments of their storylines being interesting.Unfortunately, the gameplay aspect of the game doesn't match the story ...Β MoreThis game is average at best. Jin supports using dishonorable (Ghost combat) methods of warfare while Lord Shimura, being a Samurai, prefers only that which is considered honorable in the Samurai code. The rest of the side characters are pretty forgettable with some moments of their storylines being interesting.Unfortunately, the gameplay aspect of the game doesn't match the story they are pushing causing narrative dissonance. I played the game and enjoyed it more using the Samurai method of combat. I liked it that much more that I didn't really use the Ghost combat weapons. So, when the narrative tells you are being dishonorable it really takes you out of the story if you prefer to play it the honorable way.The other main thing I did not like about this game were the fox dens and hot springs. You can easily run across the map for around two hours and go to every spot and max out your health and stamina and charms. The last main thing I did not like about the game was that every side mission involves tracking. And these tracking side missions follow two plots usually.1. You meet someone who needs help saving their family, you have to track their footprints from wherever they came from, and after getting to your destination you find out no one in their family survived.2. You need to track someone because they are doing something in secret; and you find out they have a good reason or they don't, and you can maybe choose what happens to them. The DLC story was not that great either. They try to flesh out some stuff with Jin's father, but it fell flat for me.They also made the Mongols a lot stronger by allowing them to change what type of weapon they use. (Whatever weapon they use you need to change your Samurai stance to effectively deal with them.)The problem I had with this is that the enemies will magically change their weapons when you are about to strike them in one stance, and you realize you are not dealing enough damage or are taking too much. The animation needs to be longer for the weapon changes, so it's easily seen.I would recommend this game if it were half price.
