2 POC or not 2 POC? That is the question.

Good helmet overall with good fit and protection. However, the *spin* system padding up front is supposed to act like MIPS. I cannot say whether it does or does not. But, I can’t say this gets saturated with sweat and seems to channel it right down into your face and eyes. I think they have a newer version of the helmet does does have MIPS. I would get that one over this one. Also if you do get a POC helmet, make sure you play with the rear mounted adjusting selector. This is located inside the rear of the helmet and it has three settings the greatly affect where the helmet ultimately ends up sitting on your brow. This might interfere with some larger eye protection.

Within a few weeks my new POC tectal spin helmet started having issues with the Velcro tabs inside the helmet coming off. Now several of them come off when removing the liner to wash it. I was told by POC customer service to glue the Velcro back on myself and that it wouldn’t affect its safety. Really? If the spin liner is just floating around the helmet still works? Am I supposed to fix it myself with glue? Seems like very low quality for the price.

I picked up a couple of these in the Sigma sale. Sizing seems to suit an oval head shape.I have the model with the ‘Spin’ pads, but there is a good review online ,where you can compare those to the newer version with ‘MIPS Integra’ pads
Honestly, apart from the colour change from aqua blue to black / yellow, they’re identical. The helmet has great ventilation, and I don’t tend to notice wearing the helmet ,on 2 hour plus rides. The adjuster knob is close to the edge of the shell, at the back.It can be fiddly. This gets criticised, but the Tectal shell runs deeper at the sides and the back, so that was always likely.Visor..? Nothing special.NFC and RECCO? I couldn’t give a fig as they’re irrelevant in town.. might be helpful for others though.I did ... MoreI picked up a couple of these in the Sigma sale. Recommended.(And going forward, it looks essentially unchanged.. that’s wise because it’s a classic)

Good POC/Bad POC!
4 September 2020

Good POC - Very nice looking helmet. Great coverage all over the head including the sides and back. Good adjustability (there is additional adjustability of the internal adjustment system at the inside rear of the helmet which is not shown in the instructions. This raises and lowers the internal part of the helmet at the sides and rear). Well designed and built. It's clear plenty of R&D went into this helmet.Bad POC - I had to return my helmet due to it being very big on my head. The XL/XXL was the correct size for my head circumference, and internally it fitted very comfortably using the adjustment system, but the external part of the helmet was swimmingly huge and it looked massive on my head.It cost me €35 to send the helmet back to POC. I knew before ordering that buyers were responsible for return costs. €35 was the going rate for a tracked return (POC specifies that it has to be trackable). €35 to return an item is tough to swallow when your buying a premium product from a premium brand. What I find disappointing is that a private person sending one package will normally always be charged a premium rate. Why doesn't POC use their business account to benefit buyers who are returning goods by providing them with a return label using their business account to get us more favourable rates. For this reason I would not purchase larger items directly from POC again.

Good choice for more aggressive riders.
3 June 2021

If you're looking at this helmet, know that it is not your typical bicycle helmet. This reminds me more of a hockey helmet. The Poc Tectal Race has way more protection, is larger and slightly heavier than your average road helmet. Meant mostly for mountain biking, this lid puts lots of protection around your noggin and if your riding includes greater risk, hills/trails/speed, then it's a good choice. Ventilation is good, not excellent. Would say the same for fit. I had to add foam to get the right fit on this model. Maybe the next size down would have worked, but I went with what POC recommended in a telephone consult. I have found the bracing/tightening system difficult to get used to, as even when adjusted looser than it likely should be, it slightly constricts ... MoreIf you're looking at this helmet, know that it is not your typical bicycle helmet. I have found the bracing/tightening system difficult to get used to, as even when adjusted looser than it likely should be, it slightly constricts the muscles in my forehead. So why am I keeping it? When I have this helmet sitting right, I am comfortable enough and feel extremely protected on my more aggressive rides. I would not recommend this for casual riding in the park, get something more appropriate. Way too much head gear here. But as stated above, if your activities warrant premium protection, this is a good bet.As always buying from Alti is an A1 experience.

Great looks, great quality, except for the fit of the SPIN inner lining
28 October 2020

I'm gonna just focus on the one gripe that I have with this helmet, in hopes that in future iterations this gets changed. The problem for me is, that the inner "SPIN" bolstering is just badly fit.(Disclaimer: They do say, that when a helmet doesn't fit just pic another but the helmet isn't the problem here)The problem with the racespin model is, that the bolstering is one part instead of multiples (compare pictures of other Tectal models) which wouldn't be a problem if it was produced carefully enough so that it fit and covered all those "higher" inner parts of the helmet. There are like 4 fingers on the inside and the two smaller outer ones are way to long and overlap even the end of where they are supposed to bolster while the two central fingers aren't nearly ... MoreI'm gonna just focus on the one gripe that I have with this helmet, in hopes that in future iterations this gets changed. There are like 4 fingers on the inside and the two smaller outer ones are way to long and overlap even the end of where they are supposed to bolster while the two central fingers aren't nearly long enough to cover the back ends of that helmet part that they are supposed to bolster. That is exactly why I feel an uncomfortable pressure at the back of my head. You als can't pull those central "fingers" of the SPIN lining farther back, like you could in the other model with the seperate bolsters because than I get bare plastic and an uncomfortable forehead. The back of my head though, then is nicely bolstered. So in essence the SPIN just needs to fit better. That part really needs to be machined more precisely

HELMET IS BEAUTIFUL BUT IT HURTS A LOT!
26 July 2021

Hi there! I am from Argentina and I bought this helmet in the United States through a friend. I had very good expectations but sadly I am very disappointed. It is the first one that I buy from POC and according to what the measurement suggestion indicates, I had to buy an XXL since the measurement of my head is 59 cms. The problem is that from the first use it generates a lot of pain in the adjustment area, to the point of having to remove it. It causes unbearable pressure on the back of my neck. The same thing has never happened to me with a helmet and I have several (Giro, Bell, Specialized). I hope you can help me with any suggestions about what the closure generates this pressure for me and if something similar has happened to someone else. A real shame ...

I'm in Between M/L and X/L-XXL
21 December 2020

I wish I was not right in the dead center of both sizes! I purchased this model for the current SPIN technology as I just got back into mountain biking. I have tried the following POC models: Axion, Tectal Race (nonSPIN) and Tectal Race SPIN.1. The Axion XL/XXL pushed my brow down when I was in riding position, but the L/XL did not fit my head at all.2. The Tectal Race L/XL had a better fit, because of the non-SPIN silicon pads, but I was at the largest adjustment setting without a balaclava or other head covering.3. The Tectal Race SPIN L/XL also felt great at its widest setting, but again without any head covering.I purchased the XL/XXL Tectal Race SPIN.I'm happy that I tried on the different levels of helmets with and without head coverings, as I am riding ... MoreI wish I was not right in the dead center of both sizes! As a long time user of POC ski products I was pretty pumped to enter the mountain bike arena. I have the ski helmet that compliments this mtb helmet and LOVE it. The Tectal is a work in progress. First, I have used a road style helmet since the late 80's, so the style is new. The fit is something to get used to. It wraps your head (good thing), but the inner shape for me needed some modification. The ratchet system and glasses interface could be better. The arms get hung up, but if the arms are short it won't matter. I placed the system in the deepest setting in hope of more clearance. Yes the shape is more oval, but I found some pressure on the side of my head and no contact to the back sides of my head. I experimented with spare POC helmet pads and modified the helmet. With velcro, I was able to place the extra pad in this space. This allowed me to take pressure off the ratchet, and the pads let the helmet sit more secure. The strap, I would like to see the sides have adjustability to fine tune how the straps fit. The visor is minimal so it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Sizing, back in the early days of POC the helmets were S, M, L. The new combined size of M/L if you are accustomed to a traditional M fits odd. I am getting used to the helmet.

Very good product

The helmet has a very neat finish and the glossy black fits very well to the encompassing design with large vents. The adjustable visor is long enough to protect from the sun. The adjustment of the helmet is very easily done by a tightening wheel at the back. The tightening loop goes around the head and does not create any compression point. The helmet is perfectly maintained and no floating motion is noticeable. After three outings, I appreciate the ventilation (you still have to wait for the beautiful days) and the pads, roof offering extra protection (spin system) offers a certain comfort that quickly forget the headphones. Only small regret is the chin that could have benefited from a thin protection to complete the comfort contract. The proposed protection systems that I have not been able to test as well as the robust and enveloping design of the hull are reassuring. An expense that is up to the quality of the product and which selbke me a very good investment.
