POC Octal MIPS Road Helmet Uranium Black Matte

(802 reviews)

The POC Octal MIPS Road Helmet brings its own unique design with excellent ventilation and MIPS for maximum protection. MIPS will give you advanced protection against rotational forces, while the EPS liner is thickest in the areas where the most impact occurs for targeted protection that meets the highest standards. The fully wrapped unibody shell gives you helmet structural stiffness for an ideal strength to weight ratio. The lightweight size adjustment system will help give you the perfect fit every time in combination with the moulded helmet straps. This helmet is safe and fast, but it is also incredibly well ventilated with large vents for great airflow at every speed. Adding all of this together you get a great helmet that is the evolution of the customer favourite Octal, with slight tweaks and the addition of MIPS for the ultimate road helmet.

I bought the Black Uranium Matte in size M. Head is around 57 cm.Its design is what caught my eye and I like that the vents are actually real vents. There is space carved for the openings to allow for air to flow through past the top of your head, compared to most bike helmets where the opening would expose a small area of your scalp. Although it sounds larger than it is, it is no bigger than any other bike helmet. Its weight is very light, very comfortable and doesn't weigh down if you tilt your head to one side. The straps are comfortable around the ear due to the 3-strap design where it doesn't cut underneath your earlobe with the usual V strap. The latest Chapter includes a safety magnetized rechargeable light and bigger vents. In comparison to this helmet, the vents are too small to provide enough air flow. This one is meant for casual bike riding and nothing that would cause too much sweating.Smith Optics MIPS bike helmet - great alternative to this POC Ventral Air Spin if you ever are tight on money. The comfort level is in my opinion the same as the POC. They have MIPS if that's important for you. The only possible disadvantage is the air flow with the vent design that they have if compared side to side - you may have a bit more sweat in this one but overall still a great bike helmet.

Ventral Mips is a great helmet. Looks good, feels light, very ventilated. I don’t like the bright white straps on the Mips model. Although I clean my helmet, padding, and straps after every ride, the bright white straps are harder to keep looking white. I prefer the light grey straps on the white ventral Spin model. This helmet is nearly impossible to wear a cycling cap under comfortably without it feeling too tight and uneven pressure points for a cold weather ride greater than 2 hours. I find myself loosening the fit almost the entire amount and constantly adjusting.

Feel like the title says it all. Been wearing a POC helmet for mountain biking for a few years now and have been completely satisfied with it, so when the time came to get a new road helmet, it was a no-brainer to stick with POC again.Wanted a low profile helmet, with good coverage and lots of ventilation. This helmet checks all the boxes. Could have gone up or down on sizing, but ultimately sized up to give me the flexibility of fitting a cap or thin beanie underneath. Helmet sizing has been easy to adjust and stays put.Totally satisfied.

Have not been out cycling with yet, but will say, based on first impressions, beautiful, sturdy, and well designed!!An excellent addition to all my cycling equipment. Have always worn Giro helmets. Yet this brand really measures up to anything out there, possibly exceeds most brands on the market today. Attention to detail is key, and clearly they’ve hit the mark. Thanks for this orange beauty… DO NOT hesitate…. Buy this helmet..

I’m about to buy my second POC octal helmet after I crashed my first one three days ago. I was on a gravel descent and hit a patch where the surface of the trail turned to flat rock with little lentil sized gravel bits sprinkled over the top- like ball bearings, essentially. I was doing about 20 mph when my front wheel washed out and I went down hard. My body did the sideways worm and the left side of my head smashed into the rocky trail with a staggering amount of force. My riding buddy said he saw me roll like three times, my hip, shoulder and left hand are all scraped and bruised, but my head and neck feel fine, at most a little rattled.the first words as I got up to brush myself off were “f*%k yeah, I love helmets.”This helmet saved my greater brain function, ... MoreI’m about to buy my second POC octal helmet after I crashed my first one three days ago. Was time to replace my old and beloved Kask helmet and wanted something with MIPS so thought I'd give this a try.Fit wise I am normally on the border of M 54-59 / L 56-61 helmets so bought a medium POC which is supposedly designed to span these sizes. I'd say it fits but it's snug, and if you have a rounder profile top of your skull that will make a difference no matter what the diameter of your head measures.I considered getting a large but I see people wearing these down at their eyebrows and I think this is probably why-I prefer to have that inch above my ear-line for glasses and general fit.So, it fits, it's comfortable, but requires a bit of dialing in each ride, no matter if you are wearing a hat or not. I also noticed that the shape of the helmet rim interferes with your cap brim when you put it up-the brim pushes against the helmet which overhangs and isn't great. Smaller, curved profile helmets like Kask don't impede like this. Finally, the MIPS attachment points are hard plastic circular tabs and again, the shape of your head and length of hair come into play here as without a hat if you have shaved hair you will most likely feel them against your skull and that isn't the nicest feeling and leaves a mark. With a shaved head I'd only wear this helmet with a cap as a result, but if you have longer hair it probably won't be an issue. So, looks good, quality construction, but small niggles with fit that you may or may not find annoying.

Not a POC quality helmet

I own two POC helmets and love them. Solid helmets and the venting is incredible. The Octal X MIPS is not a well made helmet at ALL. I have had two sent to me from two different bike shops both with major issues with the helmet ratchet system. When you tighten it down once on your head, if you hit the helmet from the side the system comes loose and the helmet rolls off your head. Now imagine a hard fall... I talked to POC who wanted to replace the ratchet system with the same faulty one. NOPE!! I returned them both and will advise against this helmet.Other issues:1. very minimal padding so sweat will be dripping down your face.2. Fits tight on the top back of my head and causes headache while riding.3. You can see the bright yellow MIPS system while wearing it. ... MoreI own two POC helmets and love them. I was looking to replace my 7 year old Giro road cycling helemt and wanted to retain the lightweight, ensure that it had a high degree of ventilation and add in MIPS. I did a lot of research and landed on this helmet.I ride 400-500km per week, so I was looking for a helmet that has all of the safey features, provided a great fit, visibility, ventalation and had good rider feedback/ratings.I bought the orange for increased visibility. My previous helmet is a POC Ventral Spin with POC's own SPIN technology in a size large. Perhaps it's because POC switched over to using MIPS instead or because this is a different model, but this helmet fits significantly tighter than my Ventral Spin. With the dial in the loosest setting I can already feel resistance from the front and side of the helmet when putting it on; this means I can't use a sweatband to control my sweat without the helmet pushing it down. I like wearing a sweatband because it keeps the padding from getting disgustingly soaked and because I find it works a lot better in keeping sweat from dripping down my face. The straps also fit tighter to my skin compared to the Ventral Spin which is niceI wish this helmet had the same fit as my previous ... MoreMy previous helmet is a POC Ventral Spin with POC's own SPIN technology in a size large. Overall very happy with this purchase. I think it looks good (and the matte black colour goes well with pretty much anything). It is comfortable to wear and light - I can basically forget about it while riding, which is the ideal situation. The sunglass garage works well.I do have a couple of minor gripes. I was in-between sizing, and ended up getting the "large" which does mean its not the sleekest of profiles on my head. There is also limited adjustability - obviously you can tighten the chin strap and the internal headband thingy, but beyond tightening them there's nothing you can do. You can't move things up/down or adjust the way the strap sits at the ears, so you have to hope that the fit suits you as it is.Finally, I haven't yet had the opportunity to ... MoreOverall very happy with this purchase.
