Amazing party speaker with added features

You have a ton of input options other than the bluetooth feature, but it's nice to always have the bluetooth connected to manage the sound levels or set up TV Sound Booster. To use the TV Sound Booster feature, it does require an Optical Audio Cable, luckily one is included. With the sound of this speaker, it is great for consuming content, I have a Sony sound system where I consume media, however when I set up the projector for watching movies outside, this is going to be an amazing experience. There is also input for Microphone and Guitar cables, which is a pretty amazing feature for a party. You can have karaoke or a live jam session. The microphone input is definitely a plus for me, when we have get togethers, usually birthdays or other family get togethers for the holidays, being able to make announcements this will come in super handy, likely get to test it coming up in July as they have a Microphone I can test on it.Haven't touched up on it too much yet, as there are many features to touch on with this speaker, but the sound is amazing! By default, Mega Bass was enabled (Which I still have it on). There is also Live Sound, Custom and Off. The sound gets super loud on this speaker, I possibly have it around 30% all the time on my bluetooth. I don't enable audio normalization on my apps, as I notice this typically lowers the overall volume, but even if I had this enabled, there is a lot of room for me to raise it.The Sony XV800 is definitely going to be my go to speaker for listening to music while doing things around the house. When I get to take it to a gathering, I know they're going to ask me to bring it back, if they don't try to convince me just to let them keep it! Luckily my wife has been using it while doing chores also, so I know we are just going to load the speaker back in our vehicle while politely telling them to get their own! Definitely my recommendation for a party speaker if anyone asks me!

Another powerful bluetooth speaker from Sony!

Personally, I think Sony has cornered the market with this style of bluetooth speaker. The SRS-XV800 is another in a line of great portable party bluetooth speakers.First of all, the build quality of these speakers has gotten better with each generation, with Sony listening to feedback from previous products. This new XV-800 now has wheels on the bottom to help move it around, a really nice addition to the speaker. With the battery in there that offers up to 25 hours of playback, it makes these units heavy, so having the wheels is a great asset.Talking of the battery, it really helps the speaker pack a punch! The sound from this speaker, from the start up and connection chimes, to the quality of the sound that it emits is superb. At regular listening volumes, the bass is warm, punchy and enveloping and that feeling continues all the way up to about 75% volume. At that point is when the bass tails off and you are overtaken by mids and highs. Understandable, as that is to limit distortion at higher volumes. The Omni-Directional Party Sound is enhanced via two tweeters on the back side of the speaker, throwing the sound up and around, while the main source fires the music forwards. You can rotate the speaker 90Âș and lay it on its side. There is a third tweeter incorporated in the base of the speaker so that when it is on it's side, you still have two tweeters in the upper most position of the speaker. You can audibly hear when the speaker changes configuration from upright to side projection, so you know you are getting the optimum sound from it.A staple in the Sony speaker line up, which has been there since I was a kid is the 'MEGA BASS' option, which is both fantastic and weird at the same time. Fantastic because it always enhances the listening experience, and weird, because I don't believe I've ever turned it off when using these speakers, so does it really need to be there!?! However, the answer is 'YES' because it is something synonymous with Sony! I'd be sad if it wasn't there! The speaker also has integrated LED lights that you can control using the Sony Music Center App. When you connect the speaker to that app, you have a variety of options to control, such as the sound quality/levels including the preset mega bass and live settings, along with a configurable equalizer. You can also control power options to conserve consumption, the illumination state, from presets, to a wide range of options, and then delving deeper with the Fiestable App, you can customize the colors further. And finally in the app you can manage the bluetooth connected devices and the system software.Out in the wild, the XV-800 is a water 'resistant' (not proof) speaker, even with it's rubber panel covering the important connections on the back. So don't go spilling a beer over it at that party, or try and float it in the pool. But if you splash it as you get out of the pool or knock over that beer beside it, you'll be just fine!Overall I am incredibly impressed with this speaker, and being an owner of previous generations of this style speaker, in the Sony Music Center App, you can actually connect them together to create a stereo sound scape - now that's pretty cool if you have more than one of these speakers! There are two modes actually when you connect them, one is Stereo Pairing, and the other is Party Mode which enables the same quality of sound out of each speaker, connected in a chain.Absolutely love this speaker and will be great on camping and beach trips! Highly recommend!

It’s long 25-hour battery life, mega bass 6.7” x 6.7” subwoofer, midrange speaker, and multiple tweeters really help this thing preform and it doesn’t distort at high volume. Sound will fill the room a full 360 degrees thanks to the overall design of the unit and the rear firing tweeters and the IPX4 splash resistant rating will keep this safe from a light rain or spills from party goers’ drinks. And if you find the power a little low, a quick 10-minute charge will let you keep the party going for another 3 hours. This has a pretty unique design so that if you put this on it’s side, the second set of tweeters will activate and keep the sound accurate and omnidirectional. The top panel has some easy touch sensitive backlit (sweet!) controls that you can easily use for quick adjustments. You can toggle Bluetooth on/off, toggle the TV sound booster (using included optical cable), Audio 3.5mm, and lights. Other touch controls are pause/play, Mega Bass, Volume adjustment, lights, and a battery life indicator and physical power button. The connections for the optical cable, 3.5mm audio, USB and a Mic and Mic/Guitar connection are on the back. There is also a slot on top for a cell phone. My Galaxy S22 Ultra would only fit upright w/o a case on it so it would have been nice if this area was a little bitter with perhaps rubber molding to hold smaller devices as well.Portability of this is not too bad if you are just moving around the house. There are multiple handles to use to position this, but it is quite heavy at about 45lbs. Sony has placed rollers on the bottom that are similar to suitcase wheels, but these are a little small for what they are and not the easiest to use. I do fear scratching up the bottom of the speaker, so I just carry it around for the most part.Sony Apps, there are two of them that you need to get the most out of this. I just wish they would combine the apps into one if I am honest. The main app you need to really tweak this is the Sony Music Center App. This will allow you to adjust the EQ settings, check exact battery life in %, adjust audio inputs, turn on TV sound booster, etc. and adjust the Illumination, Mega Bass, and DJ effect as well. The Firestable app has some additional features as well as some similar ones. Here you can play with DJ controls, Illumination settings, Karaoke and set up a party playlist among others. This speaker can also pair up with other Sony speakers as well so you can expand the already great sound. This is a great speaker that allows you to really customize your experience or if you just want to turn it on and pair your phone, it sounds great that way as well.

While the Sony Music Center app is simple and clean to use allowing you to select different sources, tune the audio and adjust various sound settings, the Fiestable app seems more of a gimmick than something I’d ever use.The theory with the Fiestable app is that you and your circle of friends have all installed Fiestable, you’re all on the same wireless network, and you are ok streaming non-hi-res audio to this speaker. If you meet all these requirements it means friends can submit songs to play and they play in the order submitted. I just don’t see many people interested in having to install an app to submit music. I know my use case for this device is at a neighborhood pool where there is no wifi, my backyard, where my guests connect to my GUEST wifi, not my main wifi, or in my driveway where the requirements are the same. I just don’t see any value in this app. There’s a USB-A port on the back of the unit which can charge your phone while connected, but the port does not let you playback audio from the connected device. The USB-A port’s intended use is transferring music to a USB-key and then allowing the unit to play whatever is on the USB-key. I’ve seen similar devices that have a built-in charging stand or a dedicated slot to place your phone in the device so you can keep your phone charged and playing tunes at the same time. There’s another gimmick with this unit that Sony is calling “TV Sound Booster.” Using an optical cable you can plug this device to your TV and “enhance” the sound of whatever you are playing. This feature does not take the place of having a soundbar, nor does it turn off your existing TV speakers. The feature requires using the TV speakers and the Sony Speaker. Worse, it’s using an optical cable which means you lose all support for any surround sound audio formats including Dolby Atmos. After experimenting with a number of different audio and video formats and streaming sources the TV Sound Booster enhancement boils down to mostly background audio effects and a slightly better range of bass tones. For the most part you are still relying on your TV speakers which to me is a terrible idea. If you need to boost the sound from your TV, buy a proper sound bar or invest in a proper surround sound setup.I’m excited for a summer of much better sounding music at the pool thanks to these speakers.

Great party speaker!
11 June 2023

This SXS-VX800 is a monster of a speaker. We used it at a graduation party in a rather large yard. It was audible but unobtrusive outdoors, and ran all day on the battery at a fair volume. It projects sound quite far, the bass does fade pretty quickly outdoors as you move away from the speakers, which is to be expected, but still maintains a full sound. The Bluetooth connection is very strong after you pair the speaker, it seems you need to be closer to pair, but once connected I tested it out to about 40’ and had no stuttering or noticeable sound quality degradation. The speaker can be used vertically or horizontally and has a sensor to let it know which orientation it is in, so it will switch from the top mid/tweeter speakers (4 around the top) to the “bottom” ... MoreThis SXS-VX800 is a monster of a speaker. We used it at a graduation party in a rather large yard. It has a wider, more spacious sound on it’s side, but for outdoors, I would recommend standing it up as you get more Bluetooth range. The speaker is also distinctly louder and more powerful when plugged in rather than running on battery, I estimated an instant 30% increase in bass and volume when I played a song on the battery, then plugged it in while the song was playing. The sound quality goes from loud and good to louder and better I was not a fan of the TV sound booster feature, it seemed too punchy with the bass fill and added a little bit of sibilance to the dialog- only on some shows- which I could not get rid of fully by changing the TV sound settings. An optical in is still a great feature as it can connect to my Apple Airport Express with the optical connection and does sound really clean and clear. Perhaps my TV has an issue with the optical sound output, but I don’t have the problem with my usual sound bar.I used the speaker with iOS 16 on my iPhone XS, downloaded the Sony Music Center app as well as Fiestable. Sony Music Center asked for access to my Apple Music subscription and I granted it permission. What I found out is that if the music you want to listen to is not downloaded to your phone, the app can not see it. I basically got a huge list of my playlists with zero songs on them. I’ve had a few units that used Sony apps on my phone, and they’ve been slapped together, poorly functioning, cross platform junk long enough that I do have the impression that software is a serious afterthought for Sony audio products. Fiestable is a group of toys for the lights, motion control of the speaker and a few other functions like being able to use your phone or tablet to augment the lighting on the speakers’ lights by flashing matching colors on the screen. When I set up at the party, honestly, the interest in messing with the Sony Music Center or the Fiestable app by other folks there was pretty low. Folks would just fire up their preferred music app and play directly from the app via Bluetooth.Physically, this speaker is almost 45 lbs, I can imagine it’s a lot of battery in there, and one of the coolest features on the speaker is the battery care function, which optimizes charging to maximize the lifespan of the battery, much like modern laptops and phones will do, so I have no qualms about leaving the speaker plugged in and charging without worrying about wearing down the battery.Even though it’s not cheap, this is a great speaker if you have the use for it. The software needs a lot of work, but this is a definite recommend!

Incredible feature packed portable party speaker

If you’re seeking a party speaker that will really keep the party moving, look no further. Sony continues to impress adding to the already expansive lineup of X series speakers. The reality of the size of this speaker doesn’t set in until you have the box in hand and start unboxing. Weighing in at a hefty 40 pounds, you may need a helper when unboxing. Standing almost 30 inches tall, it’s almost as big as it’s slightly bigger brother, the XV900.Setting up is extremely easy, simply pair a mobile device via Bluetooth and you’re off to the races to start thumbing away. Standing almost 30 inches tall, it’s almost as big as it’s slightly bigger brother, the XV900.Setting up is extremely easy, simply pair a mobile device via Bluetooth and you’re off to the races to start thumbing away. Pairing is simple enough you can definitely get started without reading the instructions, but I recommend doing so to become fully understanding of the extended features and modes available with this speaker. From lighting, EQ, karaoke, TV Sound Boost, to pairing with other Sony speakers, there are a ton of available features to get familiar with. To get full use of all features of the speaker, you will want to download the Sony Music Center app. While there are significant redundant controls on the speaker for adjusting all the settings, it’s very convenient and easier to see what you’re doing from the mobile app. There’s also an additional Sony Fiestable app allowing better control over the DJ effects, karaoke mode, lighting, playlists, motion control, and more.Moving onto the performance of this speaker, you won’t be disappointed. From a whopping 25 hours of battery life, this speaker has the ability to keep jamming with you all day and all night without stopping. If you do run out of juice, a 10-minute charge will give you another 3 hours of battery life. Alternatively, you can use the speaker plugged in, however if you leave it plugged in continually, be sure to adjust the battery charge settings to prolong the battery life (Enable Battery Care mode). It’s IPX4 rating allows it to withstand reasonable outdoor weather or take a splash of water. It’s 5 tweeters (front and rear) and 2 X-Balanced woofers allow for an immersive omnidirectional sound stage that fills your space with brilliant sound. The square woofers give you more speaker surface area acting like a larger woofer. With multiple inputs, you can connect a microphone and/or guitar and use the speaker for karaoke or amplification. The speaker has built-in effects to aid in expanding your soundstage in this mode as well. (See Echo and Key Control functions). Connect the supplied optical cable to your TV and use the TV Sound Booster mode for enhancing the sound of you’re audio and visual content like live performance concert videos and movies. (For best effect, utilize the speaker vertically in this mode.) Additionally, if you own more than 1 Sony X series speaker, enjoying utilizing Party Connect (with up to 100 compatible speakers) to really enhance the sound and light output in your space.Beyond the crazy amount of features this speaker packs, the sound quality doesn’t disappoint. Even at max volume, there doesn’t appear to be any distortion, and the sound is crystal clear and the bass actually vibrates things around you. You don’t simply hear the sound, you can feel the sound with this speaker. Throwing anything from Rock, Country, Rap, EDM, Trap, and more, the speaker represents the sound stage well and delivers a well-balanced, distortion free sound. If you find yourself needing to tweak things further, you can use the built-in EQ modes, or set the Custom EQ to your liking.Overall, if you’re looking for an extremely flexible, portable speaker that is packed with features, you can’t go wrong with the Sony lineup. From the all-day battery life, incredible sound stage, party connect paring, and inputs/alternative use modes, you won’t find yourself out of uses for this speaker. You’ll be using it at every party, gathering, and project around the house.

Mr Boombastic!

Mr Boombastic! From the product photo I hadn’t realised this is a pretty BIG party speaker. It stands 70cm (28") high, 30cm (12")wide and 36cm (14") deep and it weighs in at around 17kg. Fortunately it has good carrying handles for portability as well as a set of wheels that, on flat surfaces at least, mean it can be pulled along like a suitcase. It is also a heavyweight in terms of musicality. It is very LOUD, obviously, with distortion-free bass and clear vocals even at high volumes, but it also has omni-directional tweeters which provide a well-balanced sound quality regardless of where it’s placed in a room. You can also tweak the sound to your own taste by downloading the Sony Music Centre App, but I found the default setting worked best. The XV800's TV Sound-Booster mode is an interesting extra feature which worked brilliantly on action movies and music videos by adding an amazing depth to my (Sony) TV's own speakers. For this you need to connect your TV to the speaker via the supplied optical cable. The XV880 is not unobtrusive, though, so this won’t work for everyone - see photo! The flashing light bars at the top and bottom of the speaker add to the party vibe and can also be adjusted via the app or switched off. The touch-panel at the top of the speaker makes it easy to adjust the volume, shake the room with Mega-bass or change the inputs etc. Bluetooth connection to my iPhone proved easy - you can connect more than one device at a time - and it's great to see that Sony has included an old skool 3.5 jack to connect older music sources. You can synch this speaker to others around your home via Bluetooth - although I haven’t yet tried that. Battery life so far has been great, although my neighbours probably aren't up for testing the 25 hour battery life! There’s also a quick-charge function which claims to give a useful three hours playback from just a 10 minute charge. Inevitably I think battery life with depend on how you use the speaker but for a full-on all-nighter it can always be plugged into the mains.I would recommend the XV800 as a seriously loud party speaker, but I think its sound quality and the ability to connect with other portable speakers around the home are what sets it apart from the competition.

Powerful, clear modern day boombox
8 June 2023

I have used a few different smaller Bluetooth speakers over the years, and never felt like I needed anything more than those offered. That is until I got this monster. I never knew what I was missing from the sound of my music and the punch of the bass. This XV800 is one of the coolest pieces of sound equipment I have ever owned, it really is party time when you turn it on and start listening. It is very capable with several options from Bluetooth to 3.5mm inputs to phono inputs and even an optical input for TV use. You can plug in your guitar and use this as an amplifier, or run a karaoke party via the Sony Fiestable app, and then use it for massive TV sound later on. The Fiestable app is lackluster but provides a few options for karaoke in particular. The Sony Music Center app is where you can get more in depth on the speaker’s settings and see battery life etc so that’s where most of the useful features are. My first impression upon opening the box is that it is very large and very heavy. You can immediately tell that it will pack a punch just based on how massive it is. Thankfully it has a handle and little wheels so you can cart it around that way instead of having to carry it all the time. Part of the weight it surely due to the impressive battery life advertised at over 24 hours. It had 80% charge right out of the box and after spending over 6 hours listening to music on it at 50% volume which is really loud it is still reporting 60% remaining so I have no doubt 24 hours is indeed possible. And 50% of total volume is already a party so it seems to be able to produce an insane amount of sound as well. All my music sounds incredible, with plenty of tone and bass to go around and no distortion of any kind. I can walk away from it throughout my house without losing any signal strength on Bluetooth, everything continues loud and clear from my iPhone 14 pro max even upwards of 30 feet away. I love the RGB lights on either side that will shift and change depending on what’s playing creating a fun atmosphere while you listen. You can turn those off via the controls on the top of the unit as well as volume and changing inputs. All the inputs and power are in the back under a cover that allows it an IPX4 water resistance rating for poolside or camping use meaning it can get splashed or rained on with no problems just not submerged. It has rubberized feet on the bottom and one side so it can be turned on the side or standing upright and the feet keep it from vibrating against whatever surface it’s sitting on. Being able to turn it sideways is a good option for using the optical input, but it is still very large in that setting so it may not be the best option for everyone. It sounds really good plugged into a TV, but it is not a Dolby soundbar so compared to something like that it is best used for that purpose in a pinch rather than planning on making a habit of it. This speaker is a modern day boombox, and it creates phenomenal sound and a great atmosphere with the lighting effects that you can bring just about anywhere and enjoy with your friends or family. It has impressive battery life, takes a charge relatively quickly, and has made me a believer in this type of speaker. You really do get so much more clarity and power with something of this magnitude compared with the little handheld speakers on the market. I highly recommend it.

Sony Does It Again
15 June 2023

Having tried my fair share of speakers, including various Sony options I was excited to give this one a try. I initially expected it to be similar to the large size Sony speaker I have had for about 4 years now...thinking that it would be virtually a carbon copy with a few upgrades but I was definitely surprised by the differences. When the box was delivered I immediately realized before even getting a chance to open it that this one was bigger than anticipated. It is definitely taller than the Sony Extra Bass GTK-XB72 that I have and a bit heavier it seems, but not necessarily wider. It does have the customary lights that I have come to expect on most Sony speakers although it's a little more subdued compared to the Extra Bass I mentioned. It is definitely taller than the Sony Extra Bass GTK-XB72 that I have and a bit heavier it seems, but not necessarily wider. It does have the customary lights that I have come to expect on most Sony speakers although it's a little more subdued compared to the Extra Bass I mentioned. Setup was fairly simple, especially since I already had the associated apps (Sony Music Center and Sony Fiestable) downloaded. Even without using the apps pairing and setup is extremely simple for anyone to do. The top of the speaker has one actual button to power the speaker on and off. The. remaining controls are touch (Bluetooth, Optical In for the TV Sound Booster, Audio In, USB, Light, Mega Bass, and the typical controls for play/pause and volume). There is also an area with a rubber door on the back where you can plug-in various devices or audio sources such as the Optical In for the TV Sound Booster as well as the place where the charging cable goes. Speaking of charging, it charges fairly quickly but you can also use it while it is charging if necessary. You can also use the speaker to charge other USB devices that you connect to it. Sony also put 2 wheels on this speaker to help make moving it around that much easier...something that is not included on my other speaker and is much appreciated.I initially tested this out playing various genres of music to see how well the sound performed. As expected, Sony continues to provide quality sound regardless of what music I threw it's way. Even without using the Music Center App to tweak sound profiles it provided rich sound across the board, particularly with the Mega Bass engaged. The omnidirectional sound quality is evident. Within the app you can truly customize the sound how you would like it so I think virtually anyone would be happy with the possibilities. The various lighting options are always fun so you can pick the vibe you're looking for...or if you prefer eliminate the light show if that's not your thing. Keeping with Sony tradition, if you have multiple Sony speakers you can chain up to 100 eligible ones to play simultaneously so that you can have the audio playing everywhere that you needed it. I have several varying sized Extra Bass speakers and all worked with the Party Connect feature. This is great if you are like me and already own compatible speakers for the feature but if you don't own other Sony speakers that are compatible or you only own other branded speaker then you won't get to enjoy that experience. I did test out the TV Sound Booster feature by connecting it with the included Optical In cable and was impressed with how well it enhanced the tv watching experience. It isn't a feature I would use often since I already have sound bars and home audio system setups for my tv's but if I didn't have that and didn't want to invest in a system like that I would gladly use this speaker to fit that need. The only "con" I personally experienced (and I wouldn't; exactly call it a con) has always been an issue for me and that is the use of the Sony Music Center app. When it works it works great, but when it doesn't it can be a bit frustrating. I did experience an issue with the app being able to properly recognize the speaker but it is an intermittent thing I have always experienced with all of my Sony speaker and why I often opt to go the bluetooth route and stream my audio that way. But when you really want to have full access to the customization options that is the place to go. The app isn't absolutely necessary but it's good to have when you want to use it. The Fiestable app is one of those things that can be fun when needed but isn't something I often use. It's great for when you want to let others get in on the playlist fun by adding their music choice to the list from their own device. I tested it out with others in my household just to see if it still works as I recall and it does. Everyone does have to be on the same wifi network in order to join the party playlist but once they are they can help make the most epic playlist for your party. The other use for this app feels a bit gimmicky to me but some may find fun....the Party Light feature that lets your mobile device emit light that is determined by the speaker lighting. It might be fun BUT it is a huge battery drain. It continues to exist all of these years so I imagine a lot of users really enjoy it. I haven't noticed any real changes to the functionality of these two apps over the years so I'm not too inclined to use them often.Overall, this is a great option for your party needs allowing you to take it anywhere while not having to worry about plugging it up. Sony continues to knock it out of the park with their speaker offerings so I feel like you really can't go wrong with choosing any of their lineup.

Having had the previous version although slightly larger the new SRS-XV800 while smaller and narrower offered so much more than anything we’ve had before. One of the many features is a brilliant Battery life of up to 25 hours, with ten minutes of fast a charge giving us up to 3 hours. That really is impressive and thankfully there's an introduction of a new USB-A port for charging out smartphone as we had it connected via Bluetooth. If you don’t want to connect your sound via Bluetooth then the USB port can play music files via a supported USB device.I would however recommend that your main source for streaming is best over Bluetooth. What’s also worth noting for those requiring this feature is standard SBC and AAC codecs are both supported. What we found it later that evening thanks to my son who was on DJ duty is the brilliant SRS-XV800 was able to be connected to our TV using an optical cable and again this produced some incredible sounds through our Bravia LCD.We managed to find the TV sound booster feature was allowing the sound to be supported by our Sound Bar and main Bravia LCD speaker, allowing the speaker to boost the crispy tone of the bass with the rear tweeters performing equally as good - this allowed the room that night to be filled with incredible sound. The really innovative additions for us on the night was the inclusion of karaoke and guitar modes supported also with two mic inputs. Add this with the Fiestable App that allows the option on karaoke for special voice effects to enhance the singing! As mentioned the party wasn’t complete without the light show and there are eight LEDs across the SRS-XV800 with four on the top along with four at bottom. With our previous speaker we always used the Sony Music Centre app to change colours allowing you to customise the effects so this worked perfectly also on the new system.Tempted by the Sony SRS-XV800 party speaker for the impending summer months? We’ve had a great experience so far and I would highly recommend this new addition from Sony, it’s so many options and incredible sound effects along with the really fun part of the Karaoke option. Give this a go, the price is excellent and a sound investment for any home.
