I purchased this unit to store my video library and to play videos to my tv. It's media player is called video station. It only plays mp4 files. Qnap sold me a $11.99 app that claims it will play mkv files as well. It does not. Now, for the third time in the last 8 months the Qnap stopped working. I found updates and successfully installed them and magically the unit was functional.... until about three months later when it quit again. I went online and and found there now multiple updates Required. After installation all working again, I guess until Qnap shuts it down again. Each update installation took me about 40 minutes to complete. There is no way I can think of that a functioning system should stop working because Qnap puts out new updates. Maybe I wouldn't have all new features and compatibility, but I see NO new features and NO additional compatibility. But Qnap SHUTS YOUR DEVICE DOWN. I purchased this Qnap to store and play videos. No rocket science here. Tech support has been via email only. There is no documentation provided with the Qnap, the setup functions are not intuitive. And finding answers to basic setup functions are not available as far as my web searches went. I hope this review will be helpful.

When I needed additional storage, I bought it on a whim from a tech reviewer's enthusiastic suggestion, and boy was he right. Fill it with big drives and go to town. Despite being Linux, it already has a huge set of tools ready to use to make it into whatever you want. File server, media server, web server, whatever. You want to stream info to your mobile device while away from home? It can do it. And being Linux, the list of 'can do' is growing every week. I can't recommend it enough.

I got one of these because I was tired of running my own storage solutions for my very simple use case(s) and I wanted 2.5 GbE connectivity for slightly faster network speeds. I ended up paring this with a QNAP 2.5 GbE switch (QSW-1105-5T). So far it has been nothing but a positive experience. Performance has been great and the user interface has been easy to use. Pros + Fast. + Easy to use web interface. + 2.5 GbE network. Cons - No inbuilt M.2 slots. - 2.5 GbE switches are still pretty expensive, but qnap recently released a fairly affordable option, QSW-1105-5T.

I had high hopes, but Im actually sorry I decided to buy this NAS. Setup was easy enough, but the process of setting up the software I want is not intuitive. And that I was prepared for, but then I realized all the software they brag about has licensing fees, including the software license you need to access external hard drives that use exFAT. If I had it to do all over, I wouldve gone with Synology. Actually, Ive decided to build my own home server or at least buy one so that I know it has the CPU power to do what I need. So, I can't comment on the other services supported by the quirky, custom QTS OS. The OS is a negative, but not a big one for me. I also picked this device for the faster Ethernet and I am comfortable managing a small Ethernet network at home.So, it mostly works well for my needs. I deducted one star because I've had it lose power several times. I think it may be the old, four-prong plug the power adapter uses to plug into the unit. See the attached photo. To be clear, this has only happened after I've been messing around, not just spontaneously while I'm in the middle of editing photos! Also, the problem could be something else about the power brick and not this connector. I don't know.Some more expensive QNAP devices use better connectors like USB-C and the standard 3-prong power plug, maybe because Mac people will pay more for modern conveniences. I can live with USB-A and Ethernet.To conclude, a few annoyances, but if you have the ability to manage an at-home Ethernet network, you don't care enough about USB-C, and you just want basic file system capabilities, this device might be right for you.
Pros: Quick, easy to use. Very good 6 Bay nas. Getting functionality running is straightforward... Supports sata standards HD companies throw at it. I used some USB attached disks I had handy....Cons: device software not straight forwards. Qnap seem to want some extra £ for software to support h265 from built in apps. It is a licence but I think it should be part of cost. Very small point. Push me to just using nas / it hosting virtual machines not full multimedia it is capable of.
Of course it came out after I bought this product that there is malware that can steal your documents and your usernames and passwords... This could leave your entire home network susceptible to ransomware. Not a whole lot released as to how this malware can infiltrate or what measures have been taken to fix this, just the standard "update your firmware". I enjoy having a NAS system in my home, but I just can't recommend this product at this time because security of your system... this should be a number 1 priority for anyone. Other than security concerns that I hope will be addressed soon, this seems like a great item. It is my first NAS for my house and I would say only get a NAS if you have a good understanding of how network protocols work. I find it hard to believe that this box does not natively support the exFAT format. You have to buy a $3.99 driver form QNAP. The driver and unit come without a scrap of directions how to install apps and configure the unit and tech support is non existant. There is no phone support, no email support that I could get to work and no text support. It you are a systems engineer who loves to tinker to make a product work this is the box for you. I am on the verge of sending this back to B&H

Took a shot for the cheaper security camera licenses of what Qnap has. It is better than I expected. There are many reviews saying bad UIs. I think the UI is ok to me. Lots of fun with lots of configuration though I had to do lots of researches to make decisions on the configuration. I mainly use it for security cameras and video streaming. The memory upgrade was easy. Added one 16GB (Timetec Hynix IC) to make it 20GB with no issue. I can not do Qtier. It is also not good as cache memory for write cache as it could fail before writing it to my HDD. This makes me believe now Synology might be a better option if you really want to have m.2 SSD because it is built-in for Synology NAS. Qnap is not cheaper if I need to buy the RAID PCIe card. Well, I guess I am still getting cheap security camera licenses. For this reason, I took out one star.
This QNAP replaces a Drobo 5N2. At the price point purchased - special Thanksgiving promos - is a fair and good value. Got WD Red Plus 4TB to populate.... not happy with the WD, specifications are hard to find and a rigmarole to decipher (ended up with non helium drive, running 8°-13°C hotter than previous WD Red before WD scrambled their name and tried to pass off storage drives for NAS applications. I should have used Seagate Ironwolf. Access speed is excellent with my Cat-6 Ethernet & Mesh WiFi.
