Rain Bird WR2 Wireless Rain Sensor

(6 reviews)

It’s time for a little feedback from the roots. With the new SMRT-Y Soil Moisture Sensor Kit from Rain Bird, an irrigation controller is directly linked to the absolute moisture requirements of a site’s vegetation. When the sensor detects dry conditions, the next scheduled watering cycle is allowed. If a site’s soil moisture level is above the threshold, the irrigation cycle is suspended. There are just two basic components – an in-ground sensor and a user interface at the controller.

I purchased this to go with a recently installed ESP-TM2 6 zone controller. Connecting and pairing were simple, all controls seem normal. However the unit completely fails at turning off irrigation during a rain event or even manual testing. I've tried resets and sub-menu changes, all to no avail. Incredibly disappointed.

it's a great sensor but I don't like how you have to use another transformer to run this along with controller. Something needs to be fix where both the controller and sensor can run on one transformer. It's really silly to see 2 transformer on my garage wall.

Great module

This cut down my water usage with the rain sensor. I will need to look to see if this can use the forecast feature to stop future watering. It didn't rain last night but was forecasted to rain today. When the system turned on this morning, it had just started raining. The app showed rain for each day in the 5 day forecast on the app

Nice unit
11 May 2022

I only needed.the sensor that went bad on my original Rain Bird, but had to buy a whole unit. It was an easy fix. Just used the new sensor with the old control. I would think if I was able to buy the sensor separately, it would of cost just a few bucks less. Since the Sprinkler system is only used during the summer in Chicago, I'll be bring the sensor inside when I shut of the system for the winter.

The Best Rain Sensor
16 July 2017

I am an Irrigation tech by trade. Conservation Is a big part of my job. This wireless Rain Sensor Is the best complimentary Item you can add to your clock by far. I've Installed over 15 of them at my job. Follow up's on connection stability, program stability and ease of use and Installation, have exceeded my expectations! I would highly recommend this to anyone In need of a rain sensor. The easy to read display takes the guess work out of just how much rain has hit the sensor. One of the last steps before pairing the 2 pieces Is "Remove the white sticker" on the receiver that covers the Green LED light. Most Installers fail to read the directions. This flashing light will let you know the unit Is functioning properly.

WR2-RFC "Compatability" Issue
14 February 2023

Rain Bird makes a really nice SST-1200out controller that allows up to 12 zones to be controlled from a single controller. In the Rain Bird documentation, a 12V power port is shown on the controller to connect things like the WR2-RFC. If you think this connector exists, you would be wrong. A secondary, external transformer is necessary to power this device eliminating any kind of clean installation you are attempting. Be prepared to McGyver a solution if your SST is truly installed outdoors.

WR2RFC - WR2 Wireless Rain/Freeze Sensor Combo
18 May 2023

I have had to purchased three of these now since 2016 and the only thing that has quite working is the outside rain and Freeze module. These should be sold separately, Paying for something I do not need. Have two of the inside unites now in the box new as the old one would work the new outside rain and Freeze Module.

Wireless Rain-Freeze Combo

The sensor arrived in good condition and in a reasonable time. It was well packed. Both parts of the sensor (receiver and transmitter) were easy to install. Programming was also simple. The unit worked as advertised the first time I tried it. The only criticism I have is the gauge of the wire used for the common connection to the control panel and solenoid valves in the yard. My control panel does not have a connection for the rain sensor so the sensor must be installed between the control panel common connection and the solenoid valves. The sensor wire is much much smaller than the existing wiring going to the yard.

I was skeptical that this device with its simple swellable membrane (in this case, cork) could accurately measure rainfall, but after using it for two weeks (and three rain events), it seems to be doing its job and prevented the irrigation system from running when the ground was wet. However, the rain indicator that is calibrated in 1/8" increments does not appear to be even remotely accurate, as it either indicates no rain, or 1/2". I'm not too concerned about this as it does do what I wanted it to: turn off the irrigation when it rains. So far, so good. Also, the layout of the LCD display is rather funky but you get used to it.
