Beautiful Hard Pastels

The Deep Blues set are beautiful, vibrant, slightly warm (red undertones) blue pastels. (#506 Ultramarine Deep consists of a combination of ultramarine and pthalo blue pigments.) These are harder than the average Rembrandt pastels, however, and the darker shades can be a bit difficult to work with. Scraping off the outer layer before use can help. The streaks in the photo demonstrate the texture of the surface behind the paper showing through where more pressure was required to get the pigment down.

My comments are about the packaging. The pastels themselves look to be good, but I was very surprised to open a box that literally has no substantial ability to store the pastels. If you have additional storage for extra pastels or a place to put and store open pastels, great, you won't have a problem. But if you're looking to receive a box in which to store the pastels, forget it. Once the foam storage is extracted from the flimsy cardboard packaging, you can't get the foam back in. Annoying.

First I want to mention the excellent customer service I recieved from Dick Blick when my set was damaged in transit. With that said I wish I had gotten a larger set of Sennelier instead. I don't know why they are called soft pastels. They are as hard as Nupastels and know Rembrandts are famously popular. If you are new to pastels try a small set of a few brands first.I'm quite neutral. I wouldn't purchase again but don't dislike them. The shiny film on them makes them scratchy and time consuming to sand it off.

Inconsistent quality
7 August 2024

Overall they are okay, I dont mind them to be on a harder side of the soft pastels, but some sticks have hard inclusions that scratch the paper. That upsets me the most because I use Clairefontaine Pastelmat and it is expensive. The grey stick is the most painfull dowside for me personaly because I use muted colors more than bright ones

Must-have!
11 April 2024

My family would probably say I have too many art supplies at this point (haha), but knowing how much wear-and-tear my original Rembrandt 30-half-stick set has gone through recently, I decided to jump on this one, and I have no regrets! This is a great value for the half-sticks I constantly rely on, with the added bonus of a few full-sticks! I really like the pull-out drawer to keep my sticks neat and organized. Granted pastels aren't indestructible, but I like the sturdiness of Rembrandt's half-sticks, their vibrancy, and they're not overly chalky. I believe these sticks will see me through many, many projects!

My most-needed shades
11 April 2024

When working with pastels, my main subject matter is church interiors, so I naturally run out of the sienna and burnt sienna shades very quickly. I was pleased to see Rembrandt carried a little set of 5 sticks of my most-needed shades at an affordable price! Especially since I'm not a huge fan of picking out individual pastels, one-by-one. On that note, I'll probably be back to get another of their 5-count sets depending on which palette I'm low on next.

Overall, The Sets Of Five Are Great Except For The Reds
8 December 2019

I love the Rembrandt soft pastels. The colors are vibrant and they blend smoothly for fantastic results. Overall, being able to purchase them in collections of 5 and 10 related colors makes building a large set of high quality pastels affordable and delightful. With exception to the Reds.My big disappointment was buying a set of Cool Reds, being happy with them, then buying a set of Warm Reds only to find there really isn't that much of a jump in color difference between the two sets. When I took the Warm Reds out of the shipping package, I thought I ordered another set of Cool Reds by mistake or was shipped the wrong set. When I took the Warm Reds out of the shipping package, I thought I ordered another set of Cool Reds by mistake or was shipped the wrong set. If I could do it again, I would only have purchased the Cool Reds set since there is a big difference between the lightest reds in both sets so the Cool Reds give me a better variation between the darkest red and the lightest red. After purchasing and comparing the sets I noticed that the Rembrandt images of the pastel sets show the Warm and Cool Reds apart from each other with the Warm Reds out of order making it less so obvious to the buyer that there isn't much difference between the two sets. While working and blending colors, they'll both provide close to the same results. It's disappointing Rembrandt didn't do a better job of creating two sets of reds with a larger jump in value between the two sets. They could have either put together a set of a different group of reds or completely different set of colors that would have much complemented the other sets better such as Burnt Umbers. For as large and prestigous as Royal Talens is, they should have been more diligent in their selections of affordable sets. To my eye, yes, there is a difference between the two sets be it minuscule. Was it worth having both sets available for purchase to the cash strapped artist attempting to build a set of high quality pastels? No. I feel it is better to use the money to go towards the purchase a set of ten or individual full size pastel sticks.

Wonderful product. Just sketched in a huge painting on panel with this product, and I love its blend-ability and durability on a hard surface. It’s like conte but creates stronger lines. Would definitely recommend!

Soft, vibrant, affordable
3 April 2024

These are wonderful soft pastels. Vibrant colors and soft. Love that this company allows a beginner artist to choose smaller packs and labels them as cool or warm to help one understand how and when to use each color. The smaller sets allow a beginner to invest slowly in materials while gaining an understanding on their use.

a very pale earth orange-red tint
11 July 2024

I use this as an alternative to white when doing charcoal drawings, to avoid the greenish tint that sometimes happens when charcoal is mixed with titanium white. It is a very pale tint of earth orange-red, and is a bit more orange than some other very pale pinks. It is slightly firmer than many soft pastels, but still brittle and liable to breakage.
