I've been using Rembrandt soft pastels since I first put pastel to paper. I love them. They are my go to et the job done pastel. Now don't get me wrong. There are softer pastels, and there are harder pastels. These are my workhorse. These 8 pc sts are wonderful. I have them in both cool, and warm color selections. Affordable as well. The kit is especially cost efficient. I would recommend them to beginners and more mature artists. Makes it easier to see the cool vs the warm shads in the color scheme.

My comments are about the packaging. The pastels themselves look to be good, but I was very surprised to open a box that literally has no substantial ability to store the pastels. If you have additional storage for extra pastels or a place to put and store open pastels, great, you won't have a problem. But if you're looking to receive a box in which to store the pastels, forget it. Once the foam storage is extracted from the flimsy cardboard packaging, you can't get the foam back in. Annoying.

These are used by beginner and artist alike. They are hard but not the hardest. They have a great pigment range and are a perfect for mark making. These are great for building fields of grasses. Finish off with a softer pastel and it will be great.

I've never used soft pastels before other than Pan Pastels, so please understand my comments come from a total novice's point of view. I purchased the Portrait set of Rembrandt Pastels for a class I'm currently taking. So far, I've used them only on a gessoed background to provide tooth. They apply well and are easy to work with. I like that I can hold them and draw with them, which I can't do with Pan pastels. They don't blend as nicely as I'd like, and that may be due to the grainy gesso background. I plan to try them on slightly rough paper to see if it makes a difference. All in all, I've enjoyed using them, and I was able to achieve the results I wanted, other than small details. They are very dusty, but again, that is probably the rough gesso background. They are very dusty, but again, that is probably the rough gesso background. My only complaint, and this has nothing to do with this set and is related to pastels in general, is that pastels must be "fixed" if they are in a journal or on a surface that will not be under glass. Since I'm a student, all my work is in a journal, so I have to use fixative after completing the project. I love the look of pastels, but having to fix them will probably keep me using other media in the long run.
Two clients have requested sunflower paintings. I usually don't paint flowers, but took up the challenge. I have several brands of pastels, the only bright yellows I had we're softer pastels and couldn't get the smooth, delicate lines for the flower petals. Therefore I ordered the new, small, yellow sets from Rembrandts. Wah-lah! They were perfect and at a great price. I love that Rembrandt now allows you to purchase the smaller sets in color values. Rembrandts have always been my go-to for the finer details of portraits and still life. They have the vibrant, richness of soft pastels yet are great for delicate lines and details. I teach pastel painting and always recommend Rembrandt Pastels as the students first set.
The Rembrandts are excellent for blocking in and underpainting. They don't fill up the paper grit near as quickly as soft pastels. Rembrandts are not soft, but medium hard. I'm not sure why they are categorized as "soft" pastels. I love that they are resistant to smudging which makes them perfect for underpainting and they create a gorgeous base for softer pastels. I only gave them 4 stars because of the hard coating they put on the outside of every pastel. It's annoying and difficult to remove.
The feeling of these pastels surprised me. I use Nupastels mostly and in contrast found these not to be dry and chalky as I expected but almost creamy. They feel almost slightly moist as they go down, as if they were a hard oil pastel. They are soft enough to easily layer even on laid papers with less tooth (and are absolutely remarkable on Uart sanded paper) but are firm enough to not crumble in your hands. I loved the feeling of these and would certainly like to try some more. The half stick sets are an excellent bargain, and if you want to try these I recommend the 10 stick general selection set which contains white, black and a variety of colors including primaries.#sweepstakes
I love the Rembrandt soft pastels. The colors are vibrant and they blend smoothly for fantastic results. Overall, being able to purchase them in collections of 5 and 10 related colors makes building a large set of high quality pastels affordable and delightful. With exception to the Reds.My big disappointment was buying a set of Cool Reds, being happy with them, then buying a set of Warm Reds only to find there really isn't that much of a jump in color difference between the two sets. When I took the Warm Reds out of the shipping package, I thought I ordered another set of Cool Reds by mistake or was shipped the wrong set. When I took the Warm Reds out of the shipping package, I thought I ordered another set of Cool Reds by mistake or was shipped the wrong set. If I could do it again, I would only have purchased the Cool Reds set since there is a big difference between the lightest reds in both sets so the Cool Reds give me a better variation between the darkest red and the lightest red. After purchasing and comparing the sets I noticed that the Rembrandt images of the pastel sets show the Warm and Cool Reds apart from each other with the Warm Reds out of order making it less so obvious to the buyer that there isn't much difference between the two sets. While working and blending colors, they'll both provide close to the same results. It's disappointing Rembrandt didn't do a better job of creating two sets of reds with a larger jump in value between the two sets. They could have either put together a set of a different group of reds or completely different set of colors that would have much complemented the other sets better such as Burnt Umbers. For as large and prestigous as Royal Talens is, they should have been more diligent in their selections of affordable sets. To my eye, yes, there is a difference between the two sets be it minuscule. Was it worth having both sets available for purchase to the cash strapped artist attempting to build a set of high quality pastels? No. I feel it is better to use the money to go towards the purchase a set of ten or individual full size pastel sticks.
I’m breaking down the sticks into powder and applying them to cottonwood bark carvings with a fine brush then applying workable fixative to seal the pigment. I find that I can shade the colours by using different tones of green. I’m hoping to publish this technique in the “Woodcarving Illustrated” magazine. Thanks.
I really like these pastels. They have strong, clear colors and cover the paper quite well. They are easy to work with and blend very well. Occasionally some of the colors do not go on the paper in a soft manner, but they still blend well. They work well when building up layers of color. I have both a large set and smaller sets of specific colors. The blending grays work quite well. The quality seems much higher than some other pastels that I've used in the past and the price seems very good to me. I like using half sticks. The edges on them are also sharp & hard enough for detail work although I have a different set of harder pastels of another brand for that also.
