I was really looking forward to trying the Remy Martin 1738, and when I did, it did not disappoint. One thing I was worried about was of how “oaky” it would taste. We recently purchased a mezcal that was way too smoky and had made us a bit apprehensive when a liquor is described as “smokey or very oaky”. Again, this one did not disappoint. It is the right amount of oak flavor. I tried it first “neat” and then in a cocktail and I loved both. This is definitely a fine sipping liquor I will keep around. I highly recommend it.

I do not normally drink cognac as not normally something I enjoy but this was one of the drinks my Dad enjoyed so at his funeral a shot of this with a splash of lemonade just like my dada would have was brought in memory of him and as nobody else wanted to drink it as also not really their drink, I decided to and I am glad I did. This was very smooth with a slight creamyness to it, it was slightly sweet but unsure if it was this or the added lemonade. This is definitely a drink I am going to buy so I can have a toast to my Dad each year. Sorry no photo but like I said only tried it recently so no bottle of my own as of yet.

Aged in toasted oak, the master craftsmanship of Remy Martin allows the accentuation of notes of rich caramel, tasty toffee, and delightful spices. The cognac feels smooth and creamy, and works excellently in cocktails as well as taken in a shot glass or over the rocks. You can taste the quality, and it feels like you’re drinking a luxury spirit. There is nothing but top shelf energy when it comes to the 1738. Serving this chilled does make all the difference, though! Be sure to plan accordingly. The liquor is much more delicate and complex when chilled.

I’d never had cognac before so was excited to try this! It’s similar to whiskey or scotch up front but goes down smoother and has a very rich, sweet aftertaste with hints of vanilla and cherry. I drank it neat after dinner, and also tried it in a variation of an Old Fashioned and both were enjoyable! This is a great addition to my liquor cabinet and I’m excited to try experimenting more with it.
Any Remy product is bound to be amazing. This Cognac impresses and how! All the notes of figs, spices, toffee make this easy an French potion on the palate and a great addition to any drink collection. Have as is for an aperitif, do a simple mix with either Tonic or ginger ale or go all out and get yourself an old fashioned or Manhattan as it works well as a substitute for cocktails that typically use whisky or rum I think. All in all, a great find and two thumbs up!
Honestly I found RM 1738 to be less than stellar. To myself, it has more 'harshness' than say, ABK6 VSOP for example. Definitely more noticeable than a quality XO. Decent flavor profile, a bit heavier on the 'fruit' side (nothing wrong with that), it just came across as less refined than it should be, given the price point of around $60 for a fifth AND the Remy Martin pedigree. I likely won't buy this one again, there are better choices out there in the $50 to $90 range...and some that cost even less, imho.
I experiment with cognac while I drink scotch. I just stopped drinking for eight weeks. After that gap, I drank this for the first time. Wow! Delicious, complex, and smooth. It's different from what I usually do, but it works well as a nightcap. I'll definitely buy again!
Right now, this cognac is my fave. I don't consider myself a connoisseur; I just know what I like. I sampled this cognac during a Total Wine tasting a few years ago, and I thought it was excellent. At times, getting it is challenging. If it's any help, I also enjoy Pierre Ferrand, Courvoisier (particularly VSOP), and Grand Marnier cognacs.
I have bought this over & over….and the best thing about this is….Total Wine & More has various sizes…375L, 750L & 1Liter…I love giving out the 375L to my friendsI can’t complete this review without giving a Big Shout Out and Thank you to Manager (Tall British Man) at the San Ramon Store. He is extremely nice, superb customer service. I needed a 2 Bottles of the 1Litre of the 1738….It was not in the locked case but did everything to locate it for me.Thank you Total Wine & More for a Friendly & Welcoming Shopping Experience no matter what location I shop at…..which includes Pleasant Hill, San Ramon, Pleasanton, Roseville, San Jose etc
Wow! GF Scotch is normally my go to drink of preference!This is my first time trying any brandy or cognac, and I'm kind of in love! This was smooth, mellow, & full bodied. No back of the throat burn going on. I must admit it's a bit pricey, so I will reserve purchasing this for special occasions only. I'll leave you with a helpful hint, this Brandy/cognac is really good mixed in a glass of good old-fashioned North Carolina sweet iced tea. Drink slowly and sip responsibly!!
