Gives students a simple, fun, and customizable introduction to robotics that lets them build eight motorized machines controlled by programs and an ultrasound sensor. Students code the programs using an easy, visual programming app on a tablet or smartphone, which connects to the robot models via a wireless Bluetooth connection. The ultrasonic sensor works on the same principle as sonar. It sends out sound waves, which bounce off objects. The sensor interprets the echoes returning to it, and from this, detects objects in the path of the sensor. A full-color, 64-page step-by-step illustrated manual helps students assemble all of the models and teaches them about robotics in the real world. The visual programming language allows you to command the robots motors to move at different times, different power levels, in different directions, and in response to the data from the sensor. Requires a tablet or smartphone running iOS or Android. Please check the app stores for compatibility and device requirements.

My son and I were excited to build the projects, it was a fun process. HOWEVER, as mentioned by others, the app just does not work. If you manage to connect it to your ipad, it either won't respond or it'll have a mind of its own. the only thing it's good for is just to build things, but then this becomes a very expensive, limited building set. WASTE! Stay away!!!

Awesome!

My daughter was super excited to get this in the mail. She loves to build things and is also taking a pre-engineering class in middle school and wanted to explore for herself. She was excited to she was going to get to use her Tablet and Robotics smart machine at the same time. It took her some time to build but it was worth it. You have to be careful not to drop little contents on the floor so we cleared the kitchen table and worked from there. It was fun and my boys were excited to watch her build the Robots. So much fun in one experiment kit to build spy bot, beetle, robotosaurus and crocodile. This is great for kids to have to think outside the box and learn to build and critical think. My grandson loves technology and building things so this was something he was very interested in. I like the idea it can be customized so he uses his imagination. It didn't take him long to download the app and build a robot that was walking across the kitchen floor. The step by step illustrated manual was very helpful to get him started. A definite hit and a great set to challenge a kids mind. The app worked well on his Android tablet and iPhone.

Cool concept but needs work.
28 October 2020

It was not as easy to connect as stated in the book. I had to do research online and adjust my phone settings. There are a lot of negative reviews because of this. Instructions for building were a little challenging for my 8 year old. So I would recommend for a more advanced 8 year old.

Fantastic robot building kit for begginers
28 November 2018

This was my 8 year old daughters first time ever building a robot. She had a blast and learned a lot while building it. She is now very interested in learning g more about building robots and coding. Great kit for starters. We hit a few bumps but sure enough got it going. I will definitely be buying her other ones for her to build.

Great Smart Machine Kit!
23 October 2018

The Thames & Kosmos Robotics Smart Machine really puts emphasis on engineering, science and physics to work! We really enjoyed building the eight different ways that you can build your Smart Robot. The motor takes three double A batteries and it also works using bluetooth . There are plenty of connectors to attach the pieces together. The App is great to be able to use alongside the Robot. I love that it gives you options to have different builds so you can use many different ways to build the machine you want. I would recommend this machine to anyone that wants to put smart technology to use by building one of these fun products!

Great in concept, Application needs help
7 September 2017

Building it was a blast! My daughters learned a lot about the process and about hardware vs. software and a lot of other stuff we went over.Problems are... we were missing some vital parts to finish our build (18 to be exact), which are currently in the mail (quick response will update with follow thru). The motor 2 stopped working after we did build another model out. It lasted 5 minutes and seems to be jammed. The bluetooth doesn't seem to connect very well either but will update with more testing..

Robotics kit
11 September 2020

The kit itself was very nice and good quality. The instructions for assembly of the robots were less than adequate for an with year old as they suggested. There were errors in the diagrams and some of the pictures were difficult to interpret. Overall a good learning experience but it was not an easy assembly!

Very cool toy that requires focus and patients.
10 November 2018

I got this toy for my 7 and 8 year old. My 7 year old gave up in building it. My 8 year old had been building it by herself and it has kept her very busy. She's very interested in it. It does require her to be focused and have patients. She got stuck and now needs some help to finish it so we can program it with her tablet and make it move. She likes this toy a lot and will like it even more once she sees it moving. It comes with a big instruction book and here and there the instructions could be a little bit clearer. She had a few difficulties here and there to follow it, but eventually figured it out. Great Xmas gift or birthday gift.

Worthless

Great build but worthless!!!! App doesn't work even tried the other kosmos app. Very disappointed. Was bought for my son again very very disappointing. We have tried reinstalled the app, reconnecting with device, changed out batteries, and nothing helps.
