Rode NTG4 Shotgun Microphone
The RODE NTG4 is a directional condenser microphone with a super-cardioid polar pattern. The NTG4 Builds on the success of the NTG1 from RODE - a high-quality cost effective microphone for camera mounting and location recording. The newer NTG4 includes digital settings that recall last used once the mic is not in use. Unlike the NTG4+ and NTG2, the NTG4 does not include battery operation, and requires phantom power to operate.

This microphone is great . it is a short shotgun and despite its length it's still highly directional and can devour sounds from pretty distant . The noise is low - it's ok for many applications. it's quite decent enough for many applications. As ever if you would like to wind in many gain to amplify levels, Overall this is an honest product at an inexpensive price point.

I noticed one of the other reviews compared the microphone and gave it a lower rating because it didn't match the NTG3. This isn't even a fair comparison as the NTG3 is in a much higher price and performance bracket. In it's price range the NTG4 is a workhorse mic. The NTG3 is the next step up. I chose the NTG4 and not the NTG4+ because lithium batteries eventually wear out and I prefer to invest for longer term use.

After using the NTG4, I'm wondering why I didn't buy one a long time ago. It performs better than far more expensive mics in terms of sensitivity, directional pattern, and tone response. The NTG4 has become my favorite mic for use in field recording for documentaries, and news gathering.( I use it with a Zoom H4N Pro, which has phantom power available.... but if your recorder or camera doesn't have it, the NTG4+, which has an on-board battery, is a better choice. )

I got this on sale after I had been eyeing the NTG5. It got its first workout last night serving as the main mic for a hybrid meeting and it swung like a champ, with excellent off-axis rejection. It beat my overhead mic for noise and if the speaker was within two feet of it it sounded better than my lavs.
If this was the first Rode shotgun I had purchased I would have given it 5 stars. It has good rejection characteristics and is very present with a bit of a high-mid boost. Up to the task for sure. I am fortunate to also own an NTG-3 however. This puts the NTG-4 a notch down on the ladder. The 4 has a distinct self noise that would not have been a problem except I used it on a shoot alongside my 3. The 3 is simply dead quiet, transparent and a bit louder. This comes with a price...as expected. I will probably send the 4 back and pick up another 3.
In my opinion, RODE has lost its crisp. I think this is the last RODE purchase i made. They claim very low noise level, but this mike is only acceptable noise-wise, but not the Real Pro. I understand the price range, but i expected something better compare number of China products like Saramonic...
As a newbie to location sound, I was looking for best value for my limited budget. At < $400, the NTG4 was a great purchase for me. I just used it for a location shoot where we had a nearby 55mph highway, low flying private airplanes, approach vector for passenger jets and neighbors who have tractors and guns to use. Takes that I would have sworn were irreparably compromised turned out fabulous with the NTG4. I was being cautious with the gain settings, so self-noise wasn't a real issue, but so far I'm loving this mike. I've seen the reviews comparing the NTG4 to the NTG3 and I agree that for someone with the budget and a discerning ear, the NTG3 is probably the better option. For someone like me, who is just starting out, you can't go wrong with the NTG4.
The price on these seems to fluctuate a lot.I got this one on sale and actually bought an NTG4+ six months later for a ten spot less.Sound quality is very good. Off axis rejection is also pretty good. The low pass filter does a great job of eliminating boom vibration.Impressive warranty too.
I bought this mic for my run and gun kit that I use for freelance videography. I have the Rode Videomic Pro on my Canon 70D and knew that another Rode mic would be a great addition. I have only used it for a couple of jobs so far but I have been impressed with the sound quality. The one complaint that I have is the diameter of the mic. It was too small for the shotgun mount that came with my camera and I had to modify (wrap some painter's tape) in order to get a solid fit.
The NTG4 is a solidly built shotgun mic, with good pickup and side noise reduction. It's a good intermediate level mic, balancing performance and cost. Reserving five stars for the NTG3, which sounds out of this world. One footnote, I meant to buy the NTG4+, but accidentally purchased the NTG4 instead. After testing them both, I kept the NTG4. The rechargeable battery on the NTG4+ is nice, but it makes the mic a lot longer. The NTG4 has the same sound quality, and feels equally at home mounted on a camera or on a boom.
