Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro Rycote On-Camera Microphone
The Stereo VideoMic Pro provides a high quality stereo option for videographers, and is ideal for recording music, and the atmospheric ambience essential in building a realistic audio scene. With its matched pair of high sensitivity ½" cardioid condensers in a coincident XY pair, the Stereo VideoMic Pro provides a wide stereo image with natural depth. The integrated Rycote Lyre based shock mounting system separates the Stereo VideoMic Pro capsule and electronics from its mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. Constructed from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre provides superior acoustic suspension to traditional elastic solutions, and will never wear out, sag or snap. The Stereo VideoMic Pro, with its ergonomic form factor, make it perfectly suited to DSLR, consumer camcorders and large-sensor video cameras. The Kevlar reinforced braided cable, as well as the improved foam windscreen, provides excellent acoustic decoupling from the camera and offers significantly lower noise transference and higher sensitivity. The user-friendly designed rear of the microphone body features the power and equalization controls, including a high pass filter at 75 Hz which is designed to cut out the noise generated by air conditioning, traffic and other undesirable low frequency interference. A -10 dB pad allows the user to reduce the sensitivity of the microphone, making it suitable for recording loud sound sources such as live music or at sporting events. The Stereo VideoMic Pro features a +20 dB level boost specifically designed to provide a higher quality signal with DSLR cameras. When activated, the typically low quality camera preamp level can be reduced, resulting in a lower noise floor and much clearer recording.

I picked one of the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro mics up in 2013. It was a stellar mic and eliminated all wind noise in every single shot I used it for from 2013 to 2021, almost all outdoors, in all weather from Kansas to Maine. The original mic didn't fail, however the cable to connect it to the camera did. But after 8 years of heavy use, I cannot complain after all I put that mic through. I replaced it with a new Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro Rycote, and I love it as much as the old one. The mic uses the preamps built into your camera, or recorder, as any external mic will, so if you have a camera or recorder with lackluster preamps, you'll hear it in your audio. I shoot with a Lumix S5, paired with my Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro, the match is great. The Lumix preamps and audio limiters keep things clear, crisp, and never blown out, while the Rode keeps the audio from getting noisy or shallow sounding, and it keeps the wind from becoming too much or harsh. I do find the Lumix paired with the Rode picks up wind noise, however it has a soft sound to it, making it accent the audio, immersing you in the weather conditions without ruining the audio. On my Nikon the mic totally removed wind noise, however the Nikons preamps create a low hum, unless the audio is kept very low. All in all a stellar mic to pair with a camera or recorder, I'll be picking another up to pair with my b cam.

Rode dropped the ball on the QA for these microphones. If you look at B&H or Amazon reviews, there are quite a few people running into issues. I normally pay no mind, but when I purchased mine, it arrived with one audio channel busted too. I disassembled it, found a bad soldering job, and put it back together, and had no issues since. If you don't get a lemon, it's a fantastic stereo microphone. The audio is crisp, it picks up sound from a good distance, and with a windscreen, it can handle windy conditions flawlessly. It's in all likelihood the nicest stereo microphone in this price range. Some folks complained about the microphone picking up camera movement noise. The audio cable is supposed to be routed to a notch on the bottom of the micrphone; if you accidentally pull it out, it will flop around and might keep hitting the body of the microphone. The cable seats firmly, so I don't think it's a design flaw, just something to be aware of.For best quality, you'd want to switch to the +20 dB position on the microphone and then set low manual (!) gain on the camera.

Honestly, I use this more than I use the video mic pro. The audio just sounds cleaner with the stereo sound, and with outside shooting it sounds great. When you put it on your camera, just turn down the camera's amp all the way down, and boost this joker to +20 with the low cut. It sounds pretty good. Very happy with my purchase.

Easy to operate and provides great audio on my D750. I appreciate that I can listen to the recording level. I recorded a friend playing guitar in the outdoors and got a great recording.
It's a good microphone to capture ambiance sound, live music (the -20dB switch is super useful for this). Quality feels okay, the battery is super easy to swap out, and the suspension seems to do its job.BUT. I've ordered a few of these for a project in the past weeks, and they all come in this horrible single-use plastic box where the microphone is packed super tight with the cable rolled around it... EVERY SINGLE TIME the windscreen came damaged by the tight packaging and the cable wrapped around it, and never goes back to its original shape. The last one I received even had the windscreen punctured by the jack that was planted inside it, and the jack was bent and damaged as well.Rode, come on, seriously ? I use it with for video recording with my DSLRs (Nikon). My main scope is live classical music (opera) and even with full orchestra and soloists it can manage the whole sound spectrum, especially the high notes. The filters help reducing noise.Pros: build quality, sound (filter settings), handling.Cons: power supply with 9 V battery. Should be rather standard AAs or a rechargeable battery with charger. An option for camera based power supply would also be a good option.
I purchased the Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro Rycote specifically to video record live local bands with my DSLR camera. The stereo mic in my camera worked fine but too often high frequency cymbal crashes would distort the audio. That problem has been solved with this new mic. Prior to buying this mic, I rented a Rode video shotgun style mic, but it was too directional. While panning across the stage, I would lose audio from either one bank of speakers or a guitar amp. So far this new mic is working out fine and I'm very pleased with it. Plus, it's more compact than a shotgun mic and fits nicely in my camera bag.
I film long and continuous videowalks with a microphone mounted on a GH5 which is mounted on an expensive gimbal.I previously owned the Rode Stereo Videomic X which was a beautiful microphone, but too heavy to carry for long walks.I thought I could get by with this lighter and lesser priced Rode Stereo Videomic Pro. I was wrong. The mic's shock mount has a clunk, clunk, clunk sound as I walk. I think this has to do with how the mic rocks backward and forward with each stepI take. For me, the mount is nowhere near as effective as the X model which has the mounts on the condensers. The mic also picks up a lot of wind noise, even with the deadkitten, which the X didn't have a problem with. The other issue is the equivalent noise level which is higher than the X. ... More hiss. The X is heavier and costs more, but get the X, It's better. Maybe it works for some people in a limited capacity.
I am sure this mic is good in some situations. But not if you are moving the camera around. On my Canon 70D, it picks-up every bopping sound the camera movement produces, making the Rycote mount obsolete and by extension, the mic too. As far as sound is concerned, the mic picks bass sounds rather well giving a well rounded output sound although a little muddled for my taste. I also noticed quite a bit of hiss.I am going back to a regular mount mic.
Great in concept, light and well constructed but the pre amps are just too noisy. If you turn them up to +20dB, then there is an unpleasant high pitched whine in the background that is difficult to remove in post. Sadly, it now just sits in the cupboard gathering dust
