An ideal portrait-length prime, the Canon EF mount 85mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC from Rokinon pairs a bright, fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with a short-telephoto focal length to suit portraiture and other applications where shallow depth of field is desired. This manual focus lens incorporates one hybrid aspherical element to control chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and even sharpness and illumination. An Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality. This lens is also characterized by an internal focusing design, which maintains the overall length during use, as well as an 8-blade rounded diaphragm for a smooth bokeh quality. This 85mm f/1.4 lens features a Canon EF mount, and is compatible with full-frame sensors or APS-C sensors, where it will provide a 136mm equivalent focal length. A fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables extensive control over your focus position for shallow depth of field shooting. One hybrid aspherical element helps to control chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased clarity and sharpness. An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity. This manual focus lens features an internal focus design to maintain the overall lens length during use and the front filter mount does not rotate when focusing to better enable working with polarizers, graduated ND, and other filter types that require precise positioning. A rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.

Full disclosure, I'm used this lens adapted to the Panasonic S1 via the Sigma MC-21 Ef-L. The first issue was that with this setup, pressing the shutter/record buttons closed the iris a full stop. Probably not Rokinons fault but I'll still need to return this lens. I also was unable to make any stop increments above 2.8. I could set it to 4, 3.5, 3.2, 2.8 but any wider and the lens would open completely. I was disappointed at the sharpness wide open. I know you're going to lose sharpness at f/1.4 but I didn't expect it to drop off a cliff. I checked DXOMark and they found the similar results in their sharpness tests. This lens has blown me away with its plethora of capabilities. Although this is a manual lens, don’t be afraid and turn away because of that. I am a film maker but I also do photography, and it has fufilled my needs, and wants in both professions. The lens is noticeably sharp, even at f/1.4, and it can be tricky to focus it correctly so I usually use the LCD screen on my camera. This may turn a lot of people away, as it did to me before buying but the lens does have noticable color fringing in the highlights. Don’t take that too seriously though, I was able to fix it in photoshop (because I shoot raw.... *cough cough* Norman rockwell, this may not be the lens for you then) other than that, the lens is actually surprisingly good compared to its competition. Canon AE chip Not Working Correctly

Since the 35 mm 1.4 with Canon AE chip is a relatively new offering by Rokinon I hope that Rokinon can correct the problem because I otherwise liked the lens. However, if you are paying to get the AE chip instead of the Canon EF mount 35 mm 1.4 why keep something that does not perform correctly? Easily better than L glass
1 December 2016

I had been using a Canon 24-105mm f/4L for my landscape and astrophotography and need to upgrade to a faster lens. After looking at many data charts this lens easily beats out the Canon 35mm 2.8 lens at f/2.8 and you save $100 dollars. I would easily take that over that none L glass. But what about the 35mm L glass from Canon? I've found that I would not be able to get any better results with the $1,800 Canon 35mm L glass. Yes you dont have autofocus but the infinite focus capability really does not make that a factor for what this lens is really designed for. I would highly suggest skipping out on the Canon 35mm and going with Rokinon. The glass is as sharp as you get. Even fully open the results are great. You might get a little vignetting in the corners but layering your photos on Adobe CC will make that a non factor. My advice, spend the extra $50 for the AE chip and save yourself the trouble of having to manually handle the aperture by hand. It also helps with you knowing when you are in focus as well, which is very handy for a manual focus lens. Overall, it's best to save the $1000+ you could spend to get the Canon 35mm L glass and get the Rokinon 35mm with the AE chip. You will not be sacrificing anything noticeable in your photos.

Good first prime lens
17 December 2019

I'm only starting my journey in learning photography, but so far I'm quite happy with my choice of this lens to be my first (and for a while, my only) lens. One of my main motivations for delving into photography is to start doing astrophotography, and this f/1.4 lens lets in a lot of light, making it possible to get decent exposures using exposures of only a half dozen seconds or so. I chose this lens because of, the fast f/1.4 aperture, and I chose 35mm because it should allow me to get decently wide views of the sky while also being somewhat versatile in everyday photography than an even shorter focal length lens. The bokeh is also, unsurprisingly, excellent. I don't have enough experience to say how sharp the lens is or anything, but I've been pretty happy with ... MoreI'm only starting my journey in learning photography, but so far I'm quite happy with my choice of this lens to be my first (and for a while, my only) lens. Great lens for low light
17 April 2016

I used this lens for photographing the Milky Way on a Sony a6000. Stopped down to f/2.0 this lens has minute coma and excellent quality. The output is very clear and I have been able to get my most detailed photos of the stars with this lens. This lens is compatible with both APS-C and full size sensors on the Sony E-Mount system which is great for future upgrades. For a small mirrorless camera this lens can be quite large and a little heavy. A strong tripod with a good mounting system is required to keep the camera from tipping forward. The medium format (for APS-C sensors) makes this lens great for night panoramas and photo stitching. Overall this is a great lens that I will be using for a long time.

Lens appears to be in good condition. The focus ring turns with little resistance (a little too easy) but that could be just the way it was made from the factory. Otherwise a nice lens. Thanks

My Best Night Shooting Lens
30 November 2014

Solid, well built, long-lasting; these were my first impressions when I opened the box. The manual focus ring was wide and smooth making it easy to get exactly where you want. The manual aperture ring clicks comfortably for easy counting of stops. My only small complaint is that the aperture numbers are difficult to read under the Canon flash body extension, (other lenses seem to have the same problem.) As I use the Rokinon 35mm f1.4 mostly for starry skyscapes the dark nights makes reading the numbers a moot point anyhow, so I soon learned to count stops, 1, 2, 3, 4,...For night shooting this is a superb tool! Using my Canon 60D, or the newer 70D, in 'Live View' on the screen: Open the aperture fully to f1.4 to find the stars, and compose the image - then focus (and check the edges for focus as well) stop the lens down to f2.8, or whatever is possible given the light, and shoot first at 6 seconds, the increase exposures until the stars streak, depending upon latitude, and back off a bit. The Rokinon is so clear even the hardest nights seem easy. If it is freezing cold, gusting wind, etc., there's no time wasted finding, composing, and focussing for wonderful starry shots! The Field of View is enough to get a whole Constellation in frame. Scorpio, or Carina, for examples fit perfectly with a contextual view. As far as wider images, the low distortion of the edges makes the 35mm neat for stitching together several images.Sometimes when looking at details of the 100% view, pixel-peeping, I have to keep reminding myself that this is not a telephoto lens, but a wide angle lens. The sharpness and clarity of the smallest stars are better than any of my zoom telephotos show. Especially when looking at small clusters, like M7 or Ptolemy's Cluster, or larger ones like the Pleiades, the Rokinon 35mm picks up the smallest members which can just be seen with my 150-500mm telephoto-zoom. Outstanding sharpness from edge to edge, (not just in the centre of the image like some much more expensive lenses), makes it ideal for wide field work.

Mint!!! Seems unused even a little stiff to lend that new feeling. Low light monster across 3 systems that I mounted it on. BUY HERE. Thank you for the memories.

So far, so good

I purchased this lens less than a month ago and haven't used it in thefield yet (ruggedness question) which is the reason for only 4 stars. In indoortests, however, it rates a big 5 stars. Build is good, feel is good--reallysmooth focusing even with one finger as others have stated. Enables very precisemanual focusing since focus ring rotates through almost 180stop-to-stop; stops are solid, not mushy. And it has a depth of field scale. Thelens is on the heavy side for a prime, however. This is due to the amount of glassin it--12 elements in 10 groups. That likely accounts for its truly outstandingperformance. It is a terrific buy for the price, especially for an f/1.4.Sharp through the entire exposure range, almost can't tell the difference ... MoreI purchased this lens less than a month ago and haven't used it in thefield yet (ruggedness question) which is the reason for only 4 stars. It is a terrific buy for the price, especially for an f/1.4.Sharp through the entire exposure range, almost can't tell the difference wideopen to f/22. Bokeh is very good. I also don't see the softness at the cornersthat some have remarked about.Exposure can be set by thecamera thanks to the AE chip. Being a manual focus lens, it doesn't auto-focusbut it does confirm focus in the viewfinder (and in live view). The imagesbelow were taken using a Nikon D810; shutter was 1/200s, ISO 800, lighting wasvia two 45 Impact white umbrellas, with a Nikon SB-900 flash in one and aNikon SB-700 in the other. Distance to the subject (a potted plant) was approx.3 feet and focus was on the center of the flower. Exposures were taken atf/1.4, f/8, and f/22. Exposure was boosted in post for the f/8 and the f/22shots, along with some noise reduction. Depth of field is very shallow but thefocus point is there if you look for it.
