Musical sketchpad, 4 Part multitambral(2 x digital, 1 x PCM drums, 1 x analog). Drums are good and plentiful, digital voices are Supernatural based and are mostly great; the Pianos are probably weakest, but that's not what this box is about anyway. Analog is a little limited but still sounds great when used for Bass and leads. Although the Sound Set leans toward EDM, dont be fooled into thinking this is a one truck pony. use the PC Editor to get the most out of them and you will be rewarded. A real pint sized Swiss army knife of a synth and when considering the price, a real no brainer

I have wanted a synthesizer for a long time. After bleeding google & YouTube dry, I stumbled across the JD-XI. I can honestly say it is one of the best products I have ever purchased.I have no experience using a synthesizer but this this is so easy to get the hang of. The in built effects sound great, from all kinds of drums to a wide variety of synth sounds. The pattern sequencer is a godsend. Once you get the hang of the timing you can start creating your own tracks right away.I have had this thing a couple of weeks now & spent a lot of hours on it. It has helped my mental health massively. I recommend to anyone considering buying this or any other piece of equipment for that matter, to just do it. If there are things in life we want & we can get them, then why ... MoreI have wanted a synthesizer for a long time. After bleeding google & YouTube dry, I stumbled across the JD-XI. Out here shopping for guitar pedals thought I'd leave reviews for products I've purchased. Got this machine 6 years ago. Still love the quickness of this machine to lay down a nice groove or project idea. The bass notes are fat and pure. True Roland sounds in patches. The lpf and hpf knobs give a lot of options for sound snapping with on board post effects giving tones nice after touch. Recommend this to anyone in a budget for a small workstation and limited space for equipment. Keys are too small for me personally on stage.

Great little digital-analog hybrid synth. For a long time, I thought it was a toy (since it has mini-keys that are toy-like) but after doing more and more research on it, I discovered it has an amazing sound engine with two digital and one analog synth as well as a drum machine built-in (with TR-808, TR-909, and other drum sounds!). I've had many Roland synths over the years, including a Juno 106 back in the day. Currently, I own a Roland Fantom G8, G6, Jupiter 8, FA-06, System-8, System 1, Juno Gi, BK-5, TR-8, TR-08, TB-3, MC-909, and yes, even an EG-101. (LOL!) This JD-Xi includes supernatural sounds found in my FA-06 and Roland's awesome Integra 7 rackmount as well as sounds from Juno and Jupiter synths from way back in the day. So, I've changed my perspective on the JD-Xi. It's NOT a toy, but rather... an awesome tone module that happens to have a little keyboard as a bonus. (And that cool mic for its internal vocoder reminiscent of my Quasimidi Sirius!) I use the JD-Xi as a quick scratchpad along with my Novation Circuit, before transferring everything over to Logic and Ableton. No, it's not an OP-1 but it sure looks a lot cooler than Teenage Engineering's offering.
I have a more in depth review up on my website, but:Bottom line: Sold my Miniak after getting this. For me, the improvements were more panel knobs to tweak things live, and more intuitive font facing sequencer. It may only be 4-tracks vs. the Miniak's 8, but you get a lot more polyphony with the 2 digital synths, and the drum samples are quite good. The analogue bass is pretty simple, but since I got this to add some color to my existing set, I don't mind the simplicity. I also did find that you can set the pulse-width to modulate in the menu, though the pulses don't get extremely narrow. Using the vocoder or auto-note disables the analog synth. It's unfortunate, but you can only use one or the other. There could be a limitation due to the memory or processing ... MoreI have a more in depth review up on my website, but:Bottom line: Sold my Miniak after getting this. It's unfortunate, but you can only use one or the other. There could be a limitation due to the memory or processing power of the internal CPUs.There is quite a bit of functionality built into the JD-Xi at a fairly low price point. The synth engines aren't quite as complex as other synths at similar price points, but those synths are also their own beast, and lack some things that the JD-Xi is capable of. (for example, the Ultra/MiniNovas lack multi-timbrality, but have a deeper synth engine) The MikroKorg lacks polyphony, whereas the Roland has 128 voice true polyphony on each of the two digital synths (benefits of a watered down SuprNatural engine?). I would view the JD-Xi as a great starter synth/pattern sequencer, or possibly great for integrating into an existing setup for a different palette of sounds. I've started working with a jam band, and I would not hesitate taking this on stage alongside the NL2X for additional sonic flavor. It my case, it offers a bit different sonic possibilities and integrates well into my setup (the Miniak was always a bit of a pain on integrating into stuff). For some slightly more complex synthesis, I still have my Nord Lead 2X, and I think the JD-Xi compliments it well. My master keyboard can split to 4 zones, which can overlap, so I can effectively layer all 4 jd-xi synths.
Overall:We needed a small-ish groovebox/synth set-up via hardware,so we can build basic beats without using a computer, and this little powerhouse fit the bill...and some. We added/synced an Arturia Drumbrute Impact to our JD-Xi -- our creativity and song output has gone to a whole 'nuther level ever since. Intuitive, easy to learn, and loaded with great sounds, but once you get familiar with it and do some menu diving, you'll realize what a bargain this synthy groovebox is. I started with a KORG O1/W fd waaay back in 1992,so I do know a great synth when I hear or use one,so believe me when I say this is a quality unit. One thing,we were very pleased that Roland included the white replacement lettering templates; that red made me SEE red after a whole minute. Main thing is that even in '22 this is still a solid option for beginners or a second synth for budget minded musicians. The 808 kit sounds are killah when synced w our Drumbrute Impact, but wow there are so many options!
I LOVE the sound of this little synth! I own 2 of them, both in the white version. The only con is the small keys, but it's compact size means that doesn't take up too much space in a small studio. These also will be easy to transport around for live performance and not take up much space on a stage, yet this has a very professional sound for live performance. It's a FUN synth and has a lot of GREAT sounds in it that provide plenty of instant songwriting inspiration. Easy to carry around and play it for fun anywhere in the house. Sure there are better sounding analog synths by Roland such as the Jupiter 8, but those are way too heavy to move around, take up a lot of room, and cost a small fortune. I got one because a friend has one and I was very impressed. It's really versatile. I am not a keyboard player or synth expert, but reading the manuals/watching the tutorials overcomes any initial apprehension. Having drum machines, analog and 2 digital synths gives a pretty full range of possibilities. The sound quality is excellent, and variations pretty limitless.Out of the box presets are very good - some are a bit 'out there'/annoying even, but it just illustrates the possibilities.Great product - even though its been around for years.
this was my first synthesizer and Ive had it for 11 months now. What you get for the cost, in terms of sound, is worth it but now I am wishing I went with different option due to all the issues arising from trying to integrate midi. I'll never be comfortable using the JDXI in a live performance because it crashes my software, doesn't recognize clock source at times, and has a fair amount of lag. I mostly use it for sampling and sound meditation, which it's great for on its own, and if you add your own effects, even better. The sound quality is great and its signal is fantastic when analyzed by sampling, though not perfect. But the midi issues are big and could be related to the software driver, the device itself, my computer(iMac 2012) and software, or all of them. ... Morethis was my first synthesizer and Ive had it for 11 months now. If the JDXI is shut off while synced with Maschine 2, the entire software crashes and the computer has to be forced to shut down in order to get the application to respond. After updating my computer software, I can shut off the JDXI, but linking it as an input can cause everything to crash. Bank and program change via midi just doesn't work, and it can screw up your saved programs, Ill switch to a clave I saved and it may load a bass instead if that synth is a midi output. And it recently has been crashing/ freezing on its own. Other issues are after a midi sequence a note may be stuck on and the keyboard may become unresponsive.Bottomline, great for sound, and still a good options for a first synthesizer, but don't expect reliable midi integration.
