This looked to be the ideal standalone sampler for non PC based setup but in reality has a very poor level of functionality and the normal inadequate manual.Have only had it a week so may be able to overcome initial disappointment.Gave it 3 starts as I recon I can use it. Wish I'd gone for the Akai MPC live instead though.

I had wanted an SP404 for quite some time before finally biting the bullet and picking this one up. The world of electronic music creation is fairly new to me, but I have a decent background in music production/engineering which has helped the learning process. So far I have loved this machine and would recommend it for anyone interested in challenging their production work flow for some great results. Cannot wait to master the SP404 and enjoy it for years to come!

Still testing it but im really happy with it. I knew what i was getting but between the sx and the A version there is no vhange at all. Shame on roland. They could at least make a new loader software
Perfect for my needs. Compact, can run on batteries, built in microphone. Not much time to learn how it works. Not the toughest build but will get a case and should be able to go anywhere. Haven't found anything better for portable sampling and pattern sequencing. Great range of effects and you can go a long way with mangling a sound to achieve something different.
Making beats in MPC One and then playing them live through the SP is awesome!! So much fun with this machine. The next day delivery was also satisfying! Thanks
This is a very widely used form factor out there in the hip-hop / lo-fi community therefor I had high expectations. Either this is a poorly made device or mine was defective, however the no matter how I connected the outputs using a variety of cables and interfaces, there was an inordinate amount of ambient noise coming out of my unit. While using it as it was, it was also VERY difficult to just turn on and use, which was surprising as it is touted as an excellent live device as well, so perhaps once the learning curve is overcome that is the case, but it is not the case out of the box. To be fair, I am a DAW engineer for everything so I am not used to using a device like this, but even so, it was not intuitive at all IMO.
Has driven my musical creativity forward. All the buttons were initially intimidating, but there's plenty on Youtube to get you over that. Start with Bad Snacks, she talks about it a bit.
Greal little playback sampler. Not much of a difference from the SX unit. But itll get all your basic sampling/looping needs done.
