Root - Base Game

$76.45

(277 reviews)

Root is a game of adventure and war where 2 to 4 players battle for control of a vast wilderness. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.

So glad I played root with someone who had played it before, although it is a relatively straight forward game there are nuances that make it a bit tricky to get your head around. I played the vagabond who I found suited my play style very well, keeping out of conflict long enough until you can go for the victory. It does play better at larger play counts but I also know the clockwork expansion gives you AI opponents to bolster your game. I recommend this to anyone looking for a area control game with asymmetric powers that can get 4 people together to play.

ROOT is a game that takes a while to set up and learn but when you do its a lot of fun. ROOT is made up of four factions which are played completely differently in the sense you play and work towards building your power in completely different ways meaning that when you eventually choose to switch from the faction that you start with, you're in a WHOLE NEW BOAT.In my mind, that gives ROOT some amazing replayability since you would have to play quite a few games even with one faction in order to get the hang of it.One piece of advice I would give people going into playing/buying this game is that this is a game that you will be frustrated with at first and that sometimes you might feel like its unfair how some other factions work to just dominate the board ... MoreROOT is a game that takes a while to set up and learn but when you do its a lot of fun. I hesitated on getting Root, but am really glad I did. This is a unique and very interesting game. Each faction has its own set of rules and movements, which means that you play an entirely different game as you try out the different factions. This is not a game with a single simple strategy and therefore really maintains interest.Biggest drawback is that it really does not work well as a two-player game. There are some additions (such as the Mechanical Marquise in the Riverfolk expansion as well as the Clockwork expansion) that turn the play into multiplayer - we haven't given those a go yet.I think this is going to be a real hit with our game playing group - it's hard to play just once as you'll come up with strategies based on how the game went previously. Root is a somewhat complicated game based on four factions of woodland critters all attempting to rule the forest. Root is fun with any amount of players but I recommend 2 and 4 players. In a 2 player game the best rivalry is the Marquise vs, Eyrie Dynasties. In a 4 player game there really aren't any different rivalries. I mostly play 2-3 player games and prefer 2 player.I truly love this game, but there are some downfalls to the game. My main problem with the game is that the directions are quite bad. They explain the main jist of the game but there are quite a few questions I've had that either of the three rulebooks have not answered so we just used house rules. The illustrations are cute and the flow is easy after a few games. I would recommend buying this game.I enjoy playing this game with my family and using the various moves given on your faction board. I thought the designer was very creative in the production of this game and I like that there are different rules and ways to use each character. This game is definitely in my top ten..!

Only a few games into Root and it is definitely a very rewarding game, both in terms of physical appearance and gameplay. The price point is higher than other games but this is a reflection of the quality of the workmanship of the game. Root is an asymmetrical wargame dressed-up as cute fluffy woodland critters. Outside of the art, there is nothing cute and fluffy about the game -- success depends upon being ruthless while balancing upon the need to not appear as the biggest threat and, therefore, becoming the target for all of the other players. Each player plays a different woodland society, with different rules of play and strategy, generally seeking area control but not always. Gameplay is relatively fast once one knows the rules and is a genuine joy to play.

Great from the start!

As a big fan of the Redwall series of books, Root was instantly appealing to me. While many will talk about how difficult Root is to play, that only applies if you're constantly bringing new players in. If you have a stable gaming group, few other games can provide the variety, strategy, and surprisingly cutthroat atmosphere that Root does. Be prepared to do some homework, but once the game gets going it's great!

Root knocks it out of the park on so many levels for me. The copy I got was from the 8th printing and at this point, they've figured out how to teach and explain it to newcomers. The art is gorgeous, and the pieces are dripping with personality as they scatter across the board. The gameplay isn't a slouch either. It's that sort of push/pull that's kept my group on the edge of our seats as our animal armies crash back and forth against each other. Giving different objectives with the dominance cards gives the game an unpredictability that keeps people focused on the battles that reshape the land. It's a forest I'll visit again and again.

Excellent game for those who love dissecting multiple strategies. Although the base gameplay and objective aren't very complicated, having four distinct factions gives players several options and play styles to explore. The four factions are surprisingly well balanced, so everyone has a shot of winning if they play their character right. However, the main thing that drew me in was the amazing artwork! So cute! If I had to list one negative, it would be that the four distinct factions essentially require you to teach a different set of rules to each person, so it can take a while to learn. The game provides a helpful walkthrough that helps each person learn their role, but it can still be difficult to keep track of what other players are capable of.

A bit of a steep learning curve, but this game is worth it! The art is great and the gameplay is really satisfying once you pick up how things work. I like that each faction works differently so it's not the same experience each time! (Note: I haven't played this particular copy--it will be a gift--but have played before!)

The asymmetrical gameplay means every time you play a new faction it feels like an entirely new game. But each faction has a pretty good chance of winning, as we’ve had three different factions win in the three games we’ve played. Add that to a lovely Redwall-esque aesthetic and this game has instantly become one of my new favorites
