Rotring Mechanical Pencil - 600 Black 0.7mm

Poor Packaging. The item is only placed in a thin white envelope with bubble wrap which can easily cause a dent or crease to the box inside. No extra effort with the packaging however the item inside the box is undamaged and is in excellent condition.I suggest that they put a little effort with the packaging as their parcels will undergo customs clearance and travels from 3rd party logistic partners/companies including the driver who delivers the item/items.Nice Pearl white color for this Rotring 600 variant. satisfying click. don't know much about the longevity of the paint retention. This is a very solid, well built drafting pencil; a long lasting product if treated well (no pen spinning, dropping the pencil on its tip will almost certainly destroy it due the the pencil's heft). The weight is well distrubuted, but possibly a bit top-heavy given that the length of the body is made of brass. The main features that I was looking for when purchasing a new main mechanical pencil was 1) a full metal body 2) absolutely no play in the mechanism when writing 3) a knurled grip section that is very close to the tip and 4) a lead hardness indicator. I feel that the Rotring 800 is inferior as it does not meet conditions 2 and 4, however it's retracting mechanism is deceptively alluring. After changing mains so many times, I've finally settled on the 600 for good. This is a purchase you will not regret.

I can't think of any other drafting pencils that use this design, and older versions of the Rotring 600 were not like this. It's an unfortunate and frankly ridiculous change in my opinion.

This is not an a first generation Rotring, regardless of what the seller indicates. It is simply a newer Rotring with a spring inserted. The fact that the seller always has another example for sale with no box, is just a case of the buyer being a sucker (my fault). An original first generation Rotring has a different width red band near the knock among other things. At least this is a genuine Rotring pencil.

A very high quality pencil with an all metal exterior that I adore. I like drafting pencils because they give you a sense of precision that you don't really feel when you use normal pencils. The grip is not like a rubber grip, to me it feels a little abrasive on my skin, but it's something I expect to get used to. The mechanism and exterior of the pencil feel very sturdy and reliable, but I also get a sensation that it can be damaged easy because the metal construction increases the mass of the pencil, which could make drops from a school desk a little more detrimental. The weight is a little higher than a Dr. Grip pencil, for instance, but it's not a big enough difference to cause problems with hand fatigue. The pencil is a little shorter than you'd expect, which is fine with me.I would 100% recommend this product, ONLY if you are gentle enough with your supplies that you don't drop them often. It definitely does seem like a long-lasting pencil, which you might need (like me).

I got this pencil on a whim as I had no exposure to the world of stationary equipment prior to this. Long story short this pencil is fantastic, it is very well-balanced, but it is a little bit heavy but not overly cumbersome. It feels very sturdy and it is a joy to write with. I find that many pencils cramp my hands or are just not fun to write with but I never have this problem with this pencil. I have accidentally dropped it a couple of times but it never has broken in any way, I'm not saying it will survive a gun but it will definitely survive any drops from a desk. The knurling on the tip of the pencil is fantastic and is not too aggressive but still enough to provide a nice writing feel. The difference isn't cosmetic: the black coating is grippier than the polished metal, making the black one much more comfortable. I made the mistake of trying to get a second one in silver, and ended up returning it because it felt very slippery compared to the black one. It feels like a solid stick of metal with no moving parts until you go to press the lead advance, and then it clicks in the most precise feeling way. There is a feeling of exactness to the click, as if the spring was designed to provide a perfectly uniform tension throughout it's whole travel, and the mechanism is fitted to the barrel just tightly enough to never wiggle or rattle, but with just enough room so it never binds if the pressure from your thumb is off center. The pencil's balance point is exactly in the middle of it's length.Ergonomically the combo of round knurled grip and hexagonal barrel makes it rest easily in the hand. You can tell it was designed specifically with rotating in the hand to keep the sharp edge of the lead exposed in mind.I find the pencil is actually somewhat unsuited for sketching. The weight of the pencil makes the pressure required to get light lines vs heavy lines follow a bell curve rather than a more linear curve or slope: to make finer/lighter lines, you have to actively counter the weight of the pencil with your hand, as opposed to just pressing lighter. It kinda messes with your muscle memory a lot, and feels like it would be more tiring even if you retrained yourself to be used to it.It also feels oddly TOO precise: the weight and balance make it easier to make clean precise lines at the cost of rapid gestural strokes. Sort of like the difference between a brush and a technical pen (albeit less extreme), except it's all in the ergonomics rather than the tip. Or if you're a computer artist, it's like having a bit of brush smoothing/lazy mouse on at all times.This makes it less desirable for sketching IMO, but an EXCELLENT liner. I load it with 4B, and use it to "ink" blue or red pencil sketches for scanning. Not as smudge-proof as a technical pen, but the lines are nicer and you can get more line weight variety.All of this makes sense when you consider it was originally designed as a high-end tool for for drawing blueprints in the pre-CAD days, not merely as a "nicer" school or office pencil.I imagine it would be a good pencil for writing. The things that make it less suited to sketching (and well suited to outlining) would make it deliver clean and consistent lettering with less effort. The weight would still take a little getting used to.

One of the best mechanical pencils and an all time classic!

I have been using the Rotring brand since the 80's and the Rotring 600 was one of my first writing instruments. The balance of this pencil is excellent, as is the weight. There is a knurled grip point that gives perfect handling of the pencil without having to adjust you grip during the use. Combined with either a hard lead for sketching or a softer one for writing, the Rotring 600 will never disappoint the user!
