A life jacket that can keep up with my dog in the water

He also always had to wear his Front Range harness beneath that jacket so that I could walk him to/from the water on-leash. Given that previous less-than-ideal situation, I'm really glad that I decided to upgrade to the Ruffwear Float Coat before we took our most recent beach trip this month. There is no velcro on this life jacket--only webbed straps that are secured under the belly--so the jacket stayed in place on his body no matter how much he was running, paddling, and jumping into waves. The jacket kept him buoyant, and his head remained mostly above water even when he jumped into some pretty big waves that were taller than he is.The one feature that I wish was different (and why I'm only giving 4 stars instead of 5) is that the leash attachment d-ring under the handle should be metal and not plastic. I think Ruffwear could have easily used the same type of metal hardware that is used on the Front Range harness, and I'm really not sure why yall went with a plastic d-ring instead. It feels like it absolutely will break someday after enough use. To decrease the stress that I was putting on the d-ring whenever we had to use the leash with the life jacket, I looped the end of the leash around the handle once before clipping into the d-ring so that any pressure from my dog pulling forward against the leash was offloaded onto the handle instead of the plastic d-ring. I think this will add longevity to the plastic d-ring, but ultimately, this problem wouldn't exist if it was made of metal. Aside from that detail, I am happy with this life jacket and can't wait to use it more this summer!

Great life jacket. It immediately felt higher quality than any other life jacket we’ve tried. It doesn’t chafe my dog either!I got a medium for my 50-55 pound border collie (based on his measurement of 30”) and it keeps him few inches higher in the water than swimming without. I believe it makes him feel more confident too.My only suggestion if anyone is reading this is to find a better way to make the straps immobile after fixing them. The belly ones aren’t bad if you roll the excess webbing and velcro right up to the buckles but the neck has loosened on us every time we use the handle to retrieve our dog. I will likely fix the issue by running a few stitches through, however it could be dangerous if a dog were to slip though. The neck has never loosed while he ... MoreGreat life jacket. One year old 65 pound golden retriever, female. I got the orange color as I want them to be able to see her in the water. sizing: my golden retrievers chest size was exactly between medium and large. Go small. There is plenty of room. Large would’ve been ridiculously large. Resistance at first in the pool, but now my golden loves it and doesn’t flinch. it is a second skin to her. while my pup is an extremely strong swimmer with excellent stamina, it is very comforting for me to know that if she jumps out of my fishing boat, I have time to carefully turn around and grab her by the handle and hoist her back in. five stars

Follow Up Review

I posted a 3 star review two days ago about the float coat. The lack of a five star review was due to what I assumed was a sizing issue. My dog is a medium, however, the girth straps on the medium float coat were lying directly on my dogs abdomen when clipped, so the sides of the life jacket did not fully meet underneath my dog. The concern with this is that when my dog is swimming, the buoyancy of the jacket would naturally cause the jacket to float towards the surface of the water. In other words, the area of my dog that experiences the closest contact with the lifejacket while swimming, is the area of the life jacket with the least amount of padding (the exposed girth straps). In other words, the area of my dog that experiences the closest contact with the lifejacket while swimming, is the area of the life jacket with the least amount of padding (the exposed girth straps). If I have to haul my dog out of the water with the handle, those straps are digging into my dog's abdomen without any padding. Again, I assumed this was maybe a sizing mistake on my part. However, Ruffwear responded to my review and said that the exposed girth straps on my dog's stomach are not a sizing issue and that "the foam padding does not have to touch under their belly".Now that I know this is a design choice rather than a sizing issue, I'm changing my review to 1 star. If a sport-worthy/high activity human PFD's greatest point of contact with the body was two straps, we would never consider that PFD safe enough to put on the market. Ruffwear talks a big game about rigorous testing of all of their products, but I don't see how their product designers can think that this is an acceptable product. My dog's belly was red and chaffing after just one day of use because of the straps, so I am pretty sure that the foam padding does have to touch under their belly. I also want to mention that I'm not an internet-complainer and I don't just troll around all day writing bad reviews. However, I am a huge dog gear junkie and I am frequently buying and trying new dog gear. Ruffwear used to always set the standard for quality and thoughtfulness in their products, but they have been disappointing me a lot in their newer designs. This is just another nail in the coffin for me.

Great Quality and fit
14 August 2023

These life jackets are terrific. I struggled with sizing as my dogs don’t fit the standard measurements but chose X-Small for Princess, my 7kg Chiweenie, and Small for Rodney, a long-legged, long-bodied, 9kg Wiggyhuahua. The fit for both is excellent; snug and close to the body, straps to adjust for girth (neck and chest), seemingly comfortable as the dogs run around with them on, and the handle on the back is really useful for quick pick up! I introduced swimming to the dogs with these jackets; they kept the dogs afloat perfectly, and now Rodney can swim confidently without his. Next up, Kayaking! Are the life jackets expensive? Yes. Are they of high quality and functionality? Yes.

Great design and well made

I like this PFD a lot. The handle is perfect for pulling my doggo back in the kayak whenever she get's done with a quick swim. The straps are very easy to hook up which is especially important when you have a pupper who is shaking with excitement to jump in the water. Also, I really like how the excess strap length has a built in tie down.Lastly, my water doggo loves the PFD. It fits very well and doesn't get in her way when she is swimming. Plus she looks good wearing it and is proud as punch when she is shamefully strutting around saying "hi" to all of the other paddlers on shore.Definitely the best pupper PFD that I have every used.

Perfect Life Jacket for my Pooches
2 August 2022

I ended up buying two of these life jackets this summer for my dogs. My younger dog was right at the border between a medium and small, but upon reading other reviews I ended up getting the medium so his chest is completely covered by the floatation flaps. He has sensitive skin so I felt this was better than having the straps directly against his skin. It fits perfectly. My other dog was around the middle of the medium sizing and her jacket fits wonderfully as well. They're great jackets and feel very secure. We go paddle boarding and kayaking on a lake a lot and the dogs are both much easier to lift out of the water with their new jackets on. The handles are very sturdy and allow me to lift them with ease. I highly recommend these jackets.

Retriever's Best Friend

My dog, Ducky, is a swimming machine. And we are out on the water quite a bit between fetch sessions, whitewater rafting and SUP floats. He loves jumping in expectantly and when I ask him to. I know that I can't be too sure that he'll always swim to where I need him to go so having this Float Coat Jacket on him is a comfort that I would pay over and over again. His friend, Bryce, the border collie borrowed it while we were on the water the other day and it fit Bryce well, too. I enjoy having the handle of course to lift him back into the boat. I like the simplicity of the design, colors and integrity of the product. He isn't keen on it going around his face at first but we lots of treats and use, he has gotten used to it. I bought this item for my Lab to wear on moving water. I usually bring the dog along when I drift class 3/low 4 grade water for fishing purposes. The Ruffwear Float Coat is not a proper life Jacket. Its a nuisance having to frequently readjust the neck loop so the jacket fits proper. The neck loop doesn't even need much adjusting to begin with.If your dog requires a life jacket for moving water, I wouldn't recommend this one.

Sizing Issues
7 June 2021

This seems to not be an issue with many people, but I had sizing trouble with my Float Coat. My dog, measures a 30" girth (around the widest part of his abdomen), which according to Ruffwear would place him squarely in the medium size range for this life jacket. He has many other Ruffwear products including a few coats that fit him and also place him within this medium range, however, this life jacket does not fit him correctly like his other medium sized Ruffwear products. On the underside of the life jacket, there is a flap that acts as a barrier between two straps and the dog's belly. While the straps are long enough to clip in under my dog, the flaps are not. There is about a 3"-5" gap in which the straps are laying directly on my dog's abdomen. There is about a 3"-5" gap in which the straps are laying directly on my dog's abdomen. This means that if my dog falls in the water and I pull him out by the lifejacket handle, the only points of contact on him will be the two straps on his girth. You can see this gap if you look at the picture of my dog sitting with the life jacket on.I have noticed that in Ruffwear's website picture of the dog wearing the coat, that the connection point on the jacket seems to sit pretty far back on the dog's abdomen, almost behind its ribcage. I had my dog's life jacket sitting at the widest part of his abdomen, which is maybe where I went wrong. However, if this is the case, I'm surprised that Ruffwear doesn't have a tutorial for how to fit and adjust the lifejacket on your dog. On a somewhat related note, I also recently purchased one of their new design backpacks, and noticed a similar sizing issue where the pack seemed like it was a size too small despite the sizing chart telling me otherwise.I will say, that despite the sizing issue which creates a safety hazard, my dog was super comfortable in the jacket and had great range of motion. I also love how unbulky this life jacket is. I definitely want to rate this jacket higher than 3 stars because of how sleek and comfortable the design is, but I can't until the sizing issue is resolved for us. For now, I will be looking into getting a large despite what the sizing chart tells me and hopefully I can give the jacket 5 stars then
