I’ve used Ruffwear products for almost 20 years. From leashed to collars to harnesses, coats and more. They always make quality gear and stand behind their products. I got the Switchback for my new Chihuahua Pitbull Jack Russell mix after a long history of using their Front Range Harness. Currently still have all 10-12 that are still usable even though some are quite worn. Only had 1 that the threads opened after a few years and was replaced with a new one. Something I really didn’t expect. I really love the thought and research that Ruffwear puts into their gear.

The durability is 100% there and expect it to last at least as long as my previous Approach pack (6 hard years) did. It is small, but carries the 0.6L bottles really well. If I didn’t use those I would say it could comfortably carry a snack and some booties, a small bowl & a single water bottle. It lets my senior guy still take some load off me while not bogging down those arthritic joints. I’d say it’s perfect for small day adventures on trails or just around town. The straps also didn’t loosen even a little bit after a serious 2 hour run-around in the woods! I’ve used plenty of packs with other dogs before that come loose in the first 30minutes of use. So happy I got two of these, one for each of my girls. They are best for longer hikes since it's a little cumbersome to put on. I will say that they are incredibly hard to adjust. There are a lot of areas that can be adjusted but trying to actually adjust the straps is incredibly difficult. Each girl carries snacks in one pocket and leads in the other. I utilize the pocket to store theor leashes in for a quick grab if needed. My girls love to lay in creeks and lakes and the harness does just fine. The harness doesn't seem to bother them and it stays in place. They run and play like they aren't even wearing it. I'm looking into the running harness as it looks to have more breathability.

We've had other Ruffwear harnesses and have always loved their durability and quality! They're great for plucking one of the boys out of a difficult spot if need be! Two of our boys are escape artists so we wanted a harness with the second row of clips at the back so they can't wriggle out of them.We also have GPS modules for our three dogs that we wanted to secure since we have now lost two of them when the collar failed. We decided we also wanted harnesses with pockets so we could zip the modules in and be sure they're safe!Since we got rid of the collars I riveted name plates to the nice little handle.Excellent quality especially at the price! my boys love em!
This is a great, durable, and comfortable harness! We've tried so many over the years for our 85 lbs pitty but never found one like this Ruffwear! We love it so much, it's actually our 2nd one! The straps are padded, which protects our guy's furless armpits and the large padded chest section distributes the strength of our bully breed well. Other harness irritated his sensitive skin where they rubbed, but that's not a concern with this Ruffwear! The original lasted for years (and we definitely put it through some tough adventures). It washes well, too, which is a huge plus! Definitely recommend this product and Ruffwear every time!
I bought this on Amazon so this review will not show me as a verified buyer. But I wanted to review nevertheless.I was very excited to have found a backpack that had a narrow profile. However, when i received the medium size, I immediately noticed that the back belly strap rubbed up against my dog’s *****. Loosening the strap made no difference as the strap itself sits too far back and in fact, would hang beneath his *****—maybe no irritation but he’d probably pee on it.Maybe my dog’s back is too short for a medium? His girth is 27” so he’s right on the cusp of small and medium. Rather than ordering a small and having issues with the girth size, I’ll just be returning it to Amazon and looking elsewhere. Very disappointed. I wish the manufacturer included overall ... MoreI bought this on Amazon so this review will not show me as a verified buyer. Very disappointed. I wish the manufacturer included overall measurements. That might at least give owners an idea where the back strap would fall.On the plus side—it looks to be extremely well made. I chose the red, which has a slight orange cast to it, exactly the color I wanted.Back to my search.
First off, I bought 2 harnesses for my dogs and they arrived after only 3 days. Plus all the packaging was plastic free! I couldn't have asked for better service. The Switchbacks are amazingly sturdy, the material is as tough as my horse's blankets, and anything that has gotten on them has been easy to clean. My dogs have never worn harnesses and after a day of acclimating, and treats, they start spinning with excitement when I get them out. The Switchbacks are true to size and had minimal slippage on our test walk. Which could be fixed immediately by adjusting the straps. The pockets aren't substantial yet fit all I needed in them (bowls, 0.6L water bladder, poop bags, gentle leaders, and boots). My younger dog is a bit wild & also only 2, so I don’t think she’s fully ready for a larger pack with a lot of weight. She’s still more concerned with squirrel hunting on the trail than pacing herself for a long hike, so I wanted something more than just a harness, but less than a bulky pack. For our first hike, she only carried some treats & paw wax & absolutely crushed it! The trail was super steep in parts so the handle was super helpful. We live in the Northeast where trails are packed with granite boulders, roots, & pine branches- the pack handled it all so well, no scuffs or tears! It also didn’t slip around on her back, which is impressive because she’s a *very* busy pup, & I hike with them on a split lead/joring setup. I also just found some 500ml ... MoreMy younger dog is a bit wild & also only 2, so I don’t think she’s fully ready for a larger pack with a lot of weight. This is a great little pack so far. I got it so pup could carry some water when we’re out running and hiking this summer and with water bottles on both sides it should hold about a liter plus a little bowl. My guy measures 27” girth, exactly between S and M, and wears both sizes in Ruffwear just depending on how each thing fits. In the front range harness and day pack he wears a M, but the M in this was too big. I expected them to fit the same but the belly strap was too far back and the neck was super loose even with the straps as short as they go. I was worried the size S would be too close behind his front legs but it seems to fit really well. Other than having to exchange the size (which was super easy to do) I really like this little pack and am looking forward ... MoreThis is a great little pack so far. We had bought the orange daypack a few years ago and loved it, but realized for the typical hikes we generally take (usually 6-10 miles)--it was a bit too bulky. Ended up purchasing this instead and it works great for our needs! My cattle dog is able to carry her water and I have my pack for the other essential gear for a short hike (: I also love that we can use it as an everyday harness as well. My only complaint is sizing. My dog is just at 24 inches, but her neck is 12 inches-- and I cannot tighten the collar part any further, so it tends to sag from one sides to the other. Aside from that, it really is great. Plan to get an additional one for the shiba so he also has something more lightweight.
