Best 18V Battery Mower tried to date!

I have been using the 33cm model till now and found if I left the grass too long between mows, I'd have to make a second pass, and the cut width meant making many more passes to get the job done, this would almost drain a 5AH completely. With the new model, I used a 9AH and a 6AH together, spent almost less than half the time, and only dropped one bar on each battery! The wider cut means less passes to cut the same space, the more powerful and better designed deck mean not having to make a second pass, overall just a much better experience! This mower is therefor heavier than the 33cm, and is closer to a petrol mower in terms of size and performance, however is still much lighter and quieter than a petrol mower. I loved it so much I went round to my friends house ... MoreI have been using the 33cm model till now and found if I left the grass too long between mows, I'd have to make a second pass, and the cut width meant making many more passes to get the job done, this would almost drain a 5AH completely. I especially like how the mower runs at a normal power until you encounter thicker or taller grass, then you can hear it ramp up to a higher power level to do the cut, then it ramps back down to save power for the thinner/shorter sections. Then to top it all off, it stores better and more compact than the 33cm due to the vertical stands built in, the better handle design, and the velcro on the back of the grass catcher to attach to the mower handle once standing. Best mower I've ever owned!

There was no indication of any overloading while using or when finished mowing . Really disappointed in this offering as I have invested in the Ryobi 18 volt platform and saw this purchase as a natural extension of it given my exisitng petrol mower had died . Product needs to be recalled given other recent purchasers issue with what appears to be a common problem for this product .

Bought this mower over a year ago to replace an old petrol one. We live on a steep block with level terraced lawns. I actually have two mowers, one for the front yard and one for the back due to the steepness of the block. As I'm on the wrong side of 65, I decided to go with electric due to the weight factor and having a bank of batteries.I'm so impressed with this mower. It cuts well, even slightly thick or wet grass, catches well, is quiet and light and maneuverable. I can easily lift it between the split levels especially since the handles are well placed for balanced lifting. Two 5ah batteries easily does our lawns.

Until now I had a petrol mower for my verges and front lawn, with a Ryobi One 36cm mower for my small backyard. The little 36cm Ryobi would've done them all but to be honest it was a bit small and really did struggle with buffalo. Plus lets be honest, pushing a little wee battery mower around my verge was a bit embarrassing.- I got laughed at by some folks leaving the church across the road for gods sake. Pun intended.Cut to recently when my petrol mower dropped an axle during its front wheel alignment (me kicking the wheel back straight after colliding with a gate) and finding no parts are available, I did some researching and went and got me the Ryobi Mower we speak of here - and so far I haven't looked back. Bigger, better designed (the handles that slide down are far better than the old double folding arrangement), the ability to run two batteries and the smarts to pick up the revs when it hits the thicker stuff has impressed me.I haven't measured run time as that's related to the battery(s) but using 2 x 4AH batteries I did 3 full catchers on quite thick lawn before it flashed its red lights. Speaking of catchers, this one actually catches - the older model used to block up and I'd have to swing it into the air to force the clippings into the catcher.So. I'm now using this one proudly to power through my lawns - verges included. The old heavy petrol mower has gone to the tip and the original little 36cm Ryobi is relegated to leaf collecting duties (works better than a blower vac to be honest)

Power Hungry BUT Capable

Light, powerful and easy to use/push. My first use with this 40cm Mower had me going through 4x 5Ah batteries within 40minutes (highest cut setting and 2 batteries installed at a time) albeit with very long, wet grass with the mulching plug installed. Subsequent use will hopefully see longer cutting times on a lower cut setting now that the grass (not lawn) is under control (not cut for 3 months during wet winter). Extremely powerful and does not look like stalling through long thick grass. Light enough to handle on inclines and tight spaces. Does require to be turned on its side after use to clean wet grass below mower deck. Overall I am very happy with the product.

Reflecting on my lawn mower purchase.

I love the concept of this mower. It is light easy to store and been compatible with the 18V ONE+ product range, the purchased means I can share the batteries with my other Ryobi tools .When switching to an electric mower from a petrol one you do have to change your mowing habits. It’s important to do your homework to work out what kind of battery capacity you need so that you’re able to complete your entire lawnmowing task in one hit. I got 2x 6AH HP batteries when I purchased this mower. I am able to get a 50-minute runtime with this mower. That only applies on nice sunny days where the lawn is not to damp or too high. My battery performance drops down to 30 minutes if the lawns are wet or two long. That means having to do your lawns more regularly to maximise ... MoreI love the concept of this mower. I got 2x 6AH HP batteries when I purchased this mower. I am able to get a 50-minute runtime with this mower. That only applies on nice sunny days where the lawn is not to damp or too high. My battery performance drops down to 30 minutes if the lawns are wet or two long. That means having to do your lawns more regularly to maximise the mower’s power consumption. When I first got this mower, I didn’t notice the mulching attachment was installed. I mowed the lawns and discovered the catcher was empty. I couldn’t believe how well the lawns looked without the grass been caught in the catcher. On the negative side there has been some issues. I find the opening to the catcher can become blocked and the lawnmower is not powerful enough to throw the grass into the catcher. The angle in which the grass is thrown into the catcher is quite high compared to other mowers. It doesn’t seem to be an efficient way of getting the grass into the catcher. I suspect that’s why the entranceway keeps getting blocked when the grass is even slightly damp. This mower has an annoying habit of switching off without any warning even with fully charged batteries. The mower does sense the loading on the engine and will adjust its performance accordingly. However, if you try to do your lawns to quickly or if the catcher entranceway is blocked I find the mower cuts out for no apparent reason. When you let it sit for five to 10 minutes it works normally. Initially I thought this was a fault and the mower was replaced under warranty. Now I understand that the mower will protect itself against overloading and overheating. Knowing that means adjusting your habits accordingly. I do wish this mower had a lower grass setting. The lowest setting is more than twice the height of my previous mower so contributing to having to mow your lawns more often. Again this changes your mowing habits so that you are doing them more often. The negatives haven’t deterred me from this product but I am now mowing three times as much as before, and if I could recommend one thing to any potential buyers it would be to buy the biggest battery capacity that you can afford. I would seriously recommend 2x9AH HP batteries for an average sized New Zealand lawn. It simply gives you more flexibility to cut the lawns when you want rather than having to wait for better weather in which you can maximise your battery consumption.

I haven't owned a mover for more than 5 years, having had various "mower men" do my lawns. After the third contractor in 7 months become unreliable, I decided that I had to bite the bullet and look after my own lawns again if I didn't want the place to regularly look like a jungle. My big issue was storage room and the fuss of fuel - the smell of it in the shed as well as realising I was low on fuel and having to run down the servo. My local Bunnings had a big Ryobi display with a whole range of mowers which was a huge help in being able to compare models. I was stopping every 2 min to empty the catcher and 3/4 filled my 240ltr green bin in about 25 minutes. And the best part - when I'd finished cutting and brushed off the grass, I lifted the mower up and hung it on the garage wall on a couple of hooks I'd mounted - storage challenges averted! Stoked with this purchase

Worth the compromises

This was my first lawn mower purchase, so the options were a little overwhelming. The convenience and simplicity of battery power was appealing though, so I figured I would give it a crack. I have just under 200m2 of combined lawn, and though the grass wasn't thick, it was fairly tall for my first run over it, and the battery was drained about halfway through with the 6amp on the 4th height setting. The advertised run time itself is still fairly accurate, and I was able to go over the entire lawn a week or so later with the grass not overgrown. The secondary battery slot may still be useful for longer intervals between mows, but since the mower is easy to use, putting aside a half hour on the weekend is small issue.Assembly itself is fairly simple if a little ... MoreThis was my first lawn mower purchase, so the options were a little overwhelming. The handle does flex a little if trying to maneuver it close to fence lines or leaning ground, but generally a non-issue. Frame is light, and unlike my brother's Makita mower, the "on" levers don't require a lot of force to activate, saving a bit of forearm strain. So far, for the sake of not having to worry about petrol, oil, or pull starting, the tradeoffs of the runtime and charging the battery (or waiting for it to cool down) aren't a big deal.

Very happy I finally brought this. Living on property with excess water, every year the grass around the house gets too long and its to wet to use the ride on. Finally brought this last night with more rain on the way and very pleased. Despite the grass being log, full of weed and wet it performed really well.I've used a 5a/h for a first high cut and then dropped 2 levels just as a check. I then got 2x5a/h and did the rest. High cut and then a lower cut. So in affect double the distance, maybe 2 tennis courts.I loved that it is light and I could flip and clean underneath, disclaimer as the grass was wet it did clog because I went too fast, but that was my fault. Two things could be improved.1. The height adjustment is awkward and a bit tough. Might just be as it's new, but I think it's also about keeping everything inside the wheel line so you can cut along a fence etc.2. Holding a trigger while you mow is something to get used to and possibly difficult for people with severe arthritis or hand challenges. I understand this is effectively a new safety feature for a mower, but it could be a lighter trigger.
