Had my Pulsar Trails for two weeks now, so far have done 2 six mile runs on my local semi technical trails, and a nine mile effort on a nearby mixed trail (some roots, some grass, some loose gravel). So far so good. I’d mirror what other review say, the shoe fees great ticking off the miles, and can do a bit of everything without really specializing in any one thing. I previously ran in Sportiva Bushido 2s, and the extra cushion and rockered sole of the Pulsar really raises the bar for comfort. I have a narrow and low volume shoe, so finding ANY shoe that fits great is tough. The Pulsars are pretty close, though I had to swap the insole to take up a bit of volume inside. Really did the trick. Really did the trick. They don’t fit skin tight like my Sportivas did, so I’m a little less confident cornering or in more technical terrain. But that’s a trade off for more stack and better pop in the shoe. I prefer the Bushido sole as well in terms of overall grip, but the Sportivas were sluggish on the flats while the Pulsars just roll. One weird thing I noticed is the toe traction on the Pulsars is a bit lacking. Maybe I have a strong toe off in my stride…but I’ve noticed that when running on gravel, as I push off the toes really skate around a bit. Nothing offensive, but just lose a bit of steam. Maybe a bit more aggressive lugs at the front on the next version. This shoe would eat up for terrain with another half mil on the lugs…but I guess these are billed as Speed shoes…but that’s my two cents!

On the way up, I noticed I liked the fit, powered up a few moderate inclines, and liked the grip. Because of the significant climb angle, I would have to wait to see the engery (whatchamacalit) in action, but so far so good. There were a few hundred relatively flat yards ahead and bang .. I took off. Needless to say I was NOT disappointed. Wheeeeee!!!!!!!!! I have nothing to compare the spring to, I am not a cushiony, springy trail guy, but this was FUN!!!! I kept pushing because it was giving me back my extra - even if it was psychological, what do I care.Downhill time. I don't like to overdo downhills in new shoes until I build a relationship of trust. I trust this brand, but falls out here, particularly on Cave Creeks Black Mountain, for example (volcanic) can be terribly unforgiving, so I exercise a bit of caution.Anyway, since I was on a slighly softer jaunt, I dug in a litte and boy did they respond. The first descent was the most fun I have had on this trail in awhile. Good stuff. I am liking the energy insert thingamajig. Is it cheating? Maybe, but my legs are giving it its opportunity, so i don't feel too bad.Yes, more uphill, more downhills, no slips in the shake. Good control. A little more cushiony than my regular trail feel get ups, but definitely enough that I my foot positioning remained solid and predictable throughout. Loved the ride.Yes. I buy again. And yes, to me a solid 4.5-5 for a first edition.Suggestions: In Arizona, particularly the summer, color is everything. You guys need to always make a light hued, high voltage Southwest Version for any of your mixed and rocky trail runner releases. Light blues, bright yellows, that reflect the sun ... Those are appreciated. The red is certainly doable. But as a Steelers fan, the only other color being Baltimore Ravens-esque is a no-go. Looks great on the shoe, but football is religion. So brighten these up so we have some options up here (seriously, for AZ die hards, colors and breathability are major considerations for 3-4 months, the "cooler" we dress, bright, reflective colors, the cooler we feel. It makes a difference.Suggestion two ... because of how the lace system falls on the abbreviate (not too short) tongue, there was a scenario where the lacing system garage entry was obstructed by the tightened laces. I haven't had that happen on other models (ie. speedcross, etc.) Perhaps a top entry option for the lace garage would be helpful?Other than that. Keep making these, please. What a treat! Light colors, increased lace garage access ... we good.

Descending Green Mountain in Boulder recently, an afternoon thunderstorm made the Gregory Canyon rocks pretty wet. Normally in my Sense Rides, this wouldn't be a problem -- a little bit of caution, but nothing extreme. With the Pulsar Trail, though, the rocks felt like glass. I felt like I'd swapped bodies with my grandma -- scary. In dry conditions, these shoes are great... But they really fall down when the clouds move in. I just hope they use the same Contagrip compound from the Sense Rides on these shoes in the future.

Good Quality, Wider than expected toebox
11 May 2023

Let me start by saying I haven't taken these for a run yet as I'm in road race mode at the moment. Build quality is what you would expect for Salomon trail runners - they're burlier than regular running shoes without being too bulky. Personally find the lace system hard to use, the "stash" pocket is covered by the top set of laces so it's a bit finnicky to get the leftover lace in there. I'm hoping that changes with time.I have another pair of Salomon hiking boots and these fit pretty much the same. I usually wear ASICS to run in (Novablast, Nimbus) and the toebox of these is much wider. Heel still feels locked in so it shouldn't be a problem when running but we'll see.Overall the support is quite firm and feels more like a hiking boot than a runner on foot. Great trail shoe
6 November 2022

I had a feeling these would be a great shoe, and this was bolstered by seeing several entities rate this among the best trail shoes of 2022, principally for long runs. Most recently, I've used Brooks Cascadia (standard width), but found them a little too wide for my feet. Having had a handful of Salomon hiking boots over the years (primarily Quest 4D), I gave these a try. Got them just before running an ultra (ca. 34 mi) in Colorado, and this race was their maiden voyage. It was a dry course over highly varied terrain with some steep climbs and descents on mostly rocky trails (some were bare dirt), but probably at least a third of the total distance was on blacktop and gravel roads. Overall the shoe performed extremely well. Feet felt great the whole time, whatever surface we were on, and sustained no blisters (there were no water crossings on the course fwiw). If there's one thing I could change about it, that would be the quick-lace system. While I like it's simplicity and ease of use, what the wearer must do with the excess lace is counterintuitive. The tongue has a pouch on its distal end (at the base of the ankle), and the excess lace is supposed to be stuffed into that pouch, but the opening to the pouch is covered by the laces themselves (see photo), so it's very difficult to get the shoes to fit as snugly as I'd like and still be able to push the excess lace up into the pouch. For those who like their shoes to fit a little looser this would probably not be an issue, but I did find myself having to retighten a couple times during the race.Notwithstanding my issue with the lacing, it's a fabulous shoe. Definitely the best trail shoes for me that I've found!

Awesome shoes!!!I’ve been really looking forward to trying out the Pulsar Trail for a long time and have loved wearing them over the past few weeks now that I have them. The cushioning is very plush but has good spring and energy return when combined with the energy blade. I was thinking that I would only just be using these for regular or long trail runs, but have enjoyed while using them at faster paces too.I also wasn’t expecting to use them much for technical trails because of the softness, but I did find that they were supportive and stable enough. The reinforced toe cap has already saved my toes from a couple of nasty rocks too.The fit of the upper I found supportive, and have had no hot spots or blisters from them even though I’ve done every run ... MoreAwesome shoes!!!I’ve been really looking forward to trying out the Pulsar Trail for a long time and have loved wearing them over the past few weeks now that I have them. The cushioning is very plush but has good spring and energy return when combined with the energy blade. 6 June 2022

I've used the Pulsar trails in 2 longish runs in technical trails. The fit of the shoe felt very familiar to me as I was using sense rides and ultra glides. The size felt true and comfortable with enough room for foot swelling. It felt like a glove. I immediately noticed the max cushion and before the run I knew that it was going to do job for a long run as far as cushion is concerned. On the technical uphill run or power hike, it took me a few minutes to get used to the feeling of the blade but then it clicked and I could feel it working to my advantage. On the downhill, the grip of the shoe was great, but what I noticed most was how helpful the shoe was in keeping me balanced through the more technical sections of the trail. The ankle felt strong and supported on the more loose rocks or roots in the trail and the shoe somehow kept getting rocking back into position during these sections.I highly recommend these shoes.

Quite pleased!

I bought these shoes to replace my worn out Ultra/Pros, since the Pulsar Trail appears to be the next evolution of that shoe. My assumption seems to be correct because the fit, comfort, and design are very similar, only the Pulsar Trail has a bit more stack underfoot. Even though the cushion is a few mm more, because of the spring blade in between the two foams you still get a nice poppy return with each step while also getting a nice cushiony landing. I've always been hesitant with maximal cushion shoes because I prefer a good ground feel on trail, especially technical trails. Somehow the Pulsar Trail achieves both a max cushioned shoe with excellent ground feel. I ran a trail ten miler right out of the box and it was like I had been running in these shoes for over 100 miles already. The fit is just that precise, feels like that trusty pair of shoes you've always loved. Sizing seems to be true to fit; I have a low volume narrow foot so I always order a half size down in Salomon than I do from other popular shoe manufacturers. I have yet to run them in rain or mud, but I suspect because of their similarity to the Ultra/Pro that these will be just perfect, perhaps even better because of the small drain holes underfoot. Nice design, Salomon! Now just more colorway options, please!!

Rock Solid - Technical Downhill Beast
17 January 2023

Picked these shoes up about a month ago, and I have 100 miles on them now. All of my miles have been seeking vert on technical trails around Smith Rocks State Park in Oregon. Runs have been from 8-23 miles in everything from mud, to snow, to ice, to rocky scree and dry trails. I've set several PRs on some of the bigger downhills. I find the foam a little on the firm side, so on the fence if I want to use these for a longer ultra. However, I have never felt so secure in my footing on downhills. Whether I am landing in mud, ice or rocky scree the shoe stays where I put it. Excellent protection from pokey rocks. I feel like I am cheating since I almost don't care where my foot lands when running in these shoes. The traction is awesome. I feel like I am cheating since I almost don't care where my foot lands when running in these shoes. The traction is awesome. These are narrower than the Ultra Glides so I went up a half size, but the UGs are built on the road last so are wider then Salomon's usual trail fit. The Pulsars are on par with other Salomon trail shoes. Still determining durability, having some mild delam on one shoe. Not giving 5 stars since the shoe still feels a little on the firm side and foot fatigue could add up on longer (ultra) runs. Otherwise I am already starting to shop for another pair...To those who struggle with the laces covering the lace garage... once laced hook finger through loop on tongue and pull tongue up to allow access to lace garage. Maybe it's my foot/ankle shape but I've never had an issue with the laces. And I am glad I never have to retie the shoes on a run or during a race.

Very different shoe after the first 100km.
30 August 2022

I bought this thinking it would be a good all-round training shoe for the relatively smooth trails that I do most of my training on but that the blade/foam combination might give it a nice extra snap for occasional fast runs and races too. I have the Sense Ride 4 for more technical, bad weather runs, but I had been using those for regular training too.First impressions were excellent - good grip, good fit, true to size (though I got a half size up since my feet swell a bit on long runs) and on my first few runs it was a great combination of comfort on easy runs and responsiveness on fast efforts. I even used it for a 5km park race and was really happy with how it felt in such a fast race. After about 80-100km, I noticed that the responsiveness started to dwindle. ... MoreI bought this thinking it would be a good all-round training shoe for the relatively smooth trails that I do most of my training on but that the blade/foam combination might give it a nice extra snap for occasional fast runs and races too. I even used it for a 5km park race and was really happy with how it felt in such a fast race. After about 80-100km, I noticed that the responsiveness started to dwindle. The foam was not as springy and the plate was much less stiff (I could also bend the shoe much more with my hands than at the start - had not expected the stiffness of the plate to decay so much so fast). On vacation, I did some runs in the Scottish highlands with them on much more technical terrain and my feelings were mixed there. Very good protection and grip, but the outward splay of the bottom layer of harder foam led to me getting caught and tripping on larger rocks multiple times. The outward lip here could be improved to reduce this risk, since for me it means I won't wear these on technical, rocky terrain anymore. In fairness, this is not what Salomon say the shoe is for.Currently at about 300km with them. The upper is holding up perfectly - no damage or wear. The outsole however is a different story. The lugs around the heel and the ball of the foot are almost worn out. The Sense Ride 4s seem to have a much more durable outsole since I have done about 600km in those on similar terrain and those are barely worn at all. The rubber on the Pulsar Trails is noticeably softer and tackier (probably initially good for grip) and I think that's why it has worn so quickly. I was disappointed in this since it will reduce the time I can use them as my all-round training shoes. Currently there is basically no "snappyness" left that was so exciting for the first 80km but they are still very comfortable and protective. To sum up, for me they were a really exciting shoe for the first 100km and I would use them for all kinds of runs but as time has gone on they have become my shoes for non-technical, longer, slower runs. If the outsole holds up to 500-600km, I would buy them again. If it doesn't then I would probably go for Sense Rides again which for me have been more durable and capable of more varied terrain (though not as fast or as fun as the Pulsars in that first 100km).
