Samson C01 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone

$44.73

(489 reviews)

Samson's C01 has all the performance features that you demand from a large diaphragm condenser microphone. It's the perfect solution for recording vocals, acoustic instruments and for use as and overhead drum mic. Featuring a large, dual-layer 19mm diaphragm with a cardioid pickup pattern, the C01 produces a smooth flat frequency response. Its two ultra-thin sensor membranes pick up far more detailed sounds than any dynamic coil. The result is a mic that captures accurate, detailed and smooth audio with warm bass tones and extended top end. You'll hear the strings and wood of your guitar, the breath and resonance of a singer, or the brassy shimmer of a ride cymbal with crystal clear clarity. The C01's design includes a heavy gauge mesh grill, gold-plated XLR connecter and an LED for monitoring its 48V of phantom power. It also comes with a swivel mount that can be attached to any standard mic stand. In addition, an optional SP01 Spider Shockmount is available for increased mic and sound stability. Samson's C01 is one of the best values available from a professional recording microphone.

I've got two of these and first I want to clear something up. They are NOT "large diaphargm" condenser mics. They are Medium size diaphragm mics. The diaphragm diameter is only about 3/4". But what they seem to be is capsules similar to the Marshall 600 series etc. mics that are widely used and praised for drum overheads. The C01 case is larger, but on the plus side the case is very light but still looks good. You might think that the smaller capsule migh not sound as good as true large diaphragm mics. Not so. These are killer sounding mics! They don't quite have that large diaphragm sound, but they don't have the characterless sound of tiny electrets either. I am an armature sound guy for my church and for a community choir. I bought four of these to mike the community choir of 40 people. They worked great for the price that they were offered for. I did purchase the Spider Shock mounts for them separately. The recording quality was very good for the price. I also purchased two cases to store them in from Harbor Freight and Tools. I would recommend them.

Good sound for the money
24 October 2016

I love the rich sound this mic gives on male voices and most musical instruments - especially piano. I'd give 5 stars, but its self noise makes it unusable for recording anything that is quiet. Hiss intrudes into recordings of acoustic guitars and all but the loudest vocalists. I find the C-01 useful for amplified instruments and some horns, as long as the bell of the trumpet is kept a reasonable distance from the mic so as not to distort. For the price, why not keep a pair in your kit?

Bought this for home recording vocals and instruments during lockdown as we cannot go to studios. Great product. I use this with the focusrite solo gen3. Great sound, clear sound. Works great with vocals and guitars! Give it a go! It’s a must have for anyone recording at home

Perfect condenser microphone on a budget.
13 June 2020

I needed to find an affordable condenser microphone to pair with a new audio interface I purchased for recording vocals and guitar. There's only been a few times in my life where a product met and exceeded my expectations and this was one of them. It's my first condenser microphone so I don't have much to compare it to, but this microphone does everything I imagined I'd want it to.

This isn't the greatest microphone in the world. So if you're looking for a truly professional recording microphone, then feel free to spend £150 on a Rode NT1-A Microphone*.However, I would say this is probably 85-90% as good as the Rode. For a 25% of the price. This microphone is perfect for almost everyone, whether you're recording demos, podcasting or voice acting. It sports a sturdy aluminium body, looks professional and sound good; and you can't go wrong with it.The only negative I have is the microphone clip is plastic. Its a very durable plastic, but I would have liked to have seen a metal clip with a butterfly head screw to tighten it up. Its a bit difficult to angle it at anything than near vertical or up side down, and I didn't have a flat head ... MoreThis isn't the greatest microphone in the world. Samson C01 Great mic worth lots more!
13 April 2021

This is a great recording mic, especially given the affordability. In addition, the Samson C01 is a great live mic. It is the best kept secret of the acoustic performance community outperforming mics that cost many hundreds more. I have 4 of them because they've been discontinued by Samson for some unfathomable reason. It was probably reissued at a much higher price. Great mic. ridiculously good value.

Solid microphone, average sound, bit noisy, good starter on rock vocals

Overall:This was the first microphone I ever owned and have since moved on. Used soley as a vocal mic(male) in a studio with decent sound control, I have been able to compare it to other mics plugged into the same gear. I sing different genres of music ranging from rock, to soft acoustic ballads and anywhere in between.First let me say this mic has some strengths and some weaknesses. I found the "smooth top end" that they speak of to be more of a complete roll-off. For intimate songs where you want softer vocals with detail, the only way to achieve this is with some serious gain on the high frequencies. Unfortunately, the circuitry has a rather nasty "hiss" that really becomes apparent when trying to compensate for lack of frequency response. Unfortunately, the circuitry has a rather nasty "hiss" that really becomes apparent when trying to compensate for lack of frequency response. Doesnt matter which pre was used, or if no pre at all was used, the hiss is there. I found that this mic was not suited at all for a decent acoustic project.BUT, there is a place for this mic still in my studio. On my tracks where I put a little more "grit" into the vocal(i.e. rock, grunge) this mic, for the price, actually doesn't sound half bad. Bump up the low EQ and bring the mids down a tad and you can get a pretty decent recording out of it. If you are on a budget and looking for a studio mic, it's not bad for the price, so long as versatility is not a requirement. If I had it to do over again(and had it been available at the time), I would have opted for the USB version, as I have heard its a bit quiter, with the same frequency response.

Talked Into the Perfect Mic
14 July 2020

Two things: I came in looking for a more expensive microphone. The Sam Ash man spent a long time with me talking about exactly what I was doing. Then, encouraged me to go for this one which was about $40 less expensive. Second, it is great. The sound is amazing, and it is very versatile. I can do vocals obviously easily, but it works great placed with drums as well. And, it looks so cool. Nice case comes with it.
