I would describe the detour as a backpack briefcase. It fully opens lengthwise (19"x12.5") allowing full access to the contents with minimal "digging". I am deducting a star because the website has an error. The tag on the pack states 19"x12.5"x5". The website lists the 5" depth as 8" making the back almost 40% smaller than advertised. This isn't a deal breaker for me since some international flights have lifejacket storage that limits the height of underseat bags, but think briefcase vs underseater. The item appears well made. The laptop compartment and lid copartments access from the 12.5" side like a backpack. The lid has three outer compartments suitable for flat items (phone, passport, papers) and one inner compartment (file folder/envelopes). I have hunted far and wide for a perfect international carry on bag. This one is almost perfect, but I would have made some minor adjustments. The fully opening center pocket is great for access and easy packing. It is shallow, but holds a lot of flatter things and there is an interior zipper pocket in the bottom of the main compartment (great for storing my extra masks for COVID). It would have been good to have some kind of strap or mesh in the middle section so when you open it at security for a full scan (my bad luck) the stuff stays strapped in. I had to be careful when I opened it to make sure nothing fell out of that side.I found the front pockets nice, but a little hard to use because of the narrow openings (they are deep, but tight when the center is ... MoreI have hunted far and wide for a perfect international carry on bag. Packing them before filling the center helps, but it still is hard to get things out once the bag is full. There isn't a dedicated key leash, so I used the loop inside the laptop compartment. There isn't a place to stow a pen, so had to just let it float in one of the front pockets. For my international trip, the bag held a change of clothes (including some flat sandals), dopkits and liquid baggie, clutch, 15" laptop with charger and flight essentials such as my earbuds, chargers for various devices, eye mask, hand lotion, kindle, passport and iphone 8. I also had my metal water bottle, it fit easily in the dedicated pocket with room to spare. The bag was comfortable to wear, but I mostly towed it on my roll aboard luggage - the strap fits a standard handle, but it was close fit so may not work for all bags. There is not a waist or chest strap on the bag if you are wearing it as a backpack so might get heavy if it is fully loaded.Overall a good bag, it holds the change of clothes and laptop as I wanted along with room for my normal in flight necessities. Just needs a few minor changes to make it perfect, but think its the best one I have found to date.

I make quite a few trips each year am required to carry my work laptop wherever I go. Hence I need my carry on bag to have a dedicated laptop compartment separate from the clothing section. Also , since a few of these trips are for business, I need my shirts to remain well pressed once I get down the flight. This bag fits the bill perfectly. Being an organized person myself, I really appreciate how well designed this bag is. 3 tiers of zippers on the front provide space for quick access to travel documents / phones/chargers that need to be available without having to disturb the clothing section. The clothing section opens up completely like a suitcase and has multiple different zippered area for storing the innerwear and such stuff. There is also a separation where you can just throw in just about anything which does not need to stay pressed. A separate shirt sized area is available where you can store 3-4 dress shirts without the risk of them getting crumpled. The laptop area is well padded and easily accomodates my 15' laptop with room to spare. This pocket is also separated from the base of the bag so you arent hitting your laptop each time you are placing the bag on the floor. The shoulder straps are well padded but can get a bit uncomfortable if there is a lot stashed into the backpack. And it is easy to overfill the backpack - it has so much room. There is also a belt at the back to be able to be mounted on the handle of your check in luggage. It fits easily below the seat and is very durable. Did I mentioned the handles? There are so many handles on it. One on top, like regular backpack, one on the side so it can be held like a briefcase and 2 in the front for when it gets too heavy to be lifted with one handle. Excellent, well designed and durable backpack perfect for travel.

Love this backpack! Great Backpack. Versatile. Well made. Durable. I use this backpack daily as a fitness instructor. I am not gentle with it. It takes a beating daily but stays in great condition. It is well designed with a padded slot for my laptop. Multiple small pockets for pens, adapters, etc. it’s also very comfortable to wear.
Loved the functionality of the backpack overall. You can fit a ton of stuff inside! I have one issue with the outside front pockets- a bit disappointing considering their use is limited and a pretty tight fit when the backpack itself is packed full, you can barely fit your hand in the pockets to pull stuff out. Side pocket is great- fit water bottle and umbrella! Comfortable to wear. Bag itself is pretty huge but it did fit under the seat in front of me on the plane snuggly. I'm keeping it. All I need for a weekend trip.
I purchased one of these bags last year and use it every week for travel. The way it opens like a suitcase makes packing super easy. I used this bag on a three day work trip and had plenty of room for 2 pairs of slacks, 3 dress shirts, sleeping cloths, couple of t shirts and socks and underwear and had plenty of room left over. Also carried a 13” laptop. Bag fit under the seat and made getting on and off the plane easy. The only thing I wish mine had would be a sternum strap, but this current one does. Although I hate buying another bag that is so similar to the one I have I might have to pass mine done to one of the kids and buy this one just for the air tag and sternum strap.
#sweepstakes I bought the Detour travel backpack on sale directly from the manufacturer. I've always felt that Samsonite list prices didn't always match the quality of the bags, so this was the safer bet. I was looking for a professional-looking travel backpack that would accommodate a few days of clothes and toiletries as well as a laptop and the accompanying electronics. Samsonite is a quality brand in my experience, and this backpack is no exception. It doesn't make the "ultimate travel backpack" status for me (and to be fair, nothing else has so far), but it's a good bag. At 19" in length and a decent weight, it isn't too bulky or heavy. I was able to comfortably fit two shirts, two pairs of shorts, (leisure trip in the middle of summer) and two pairs of socks ... More#sweepstakes I bought the Detour travel backpack on sale directly from the manufacturer. It doesn't make the "ultimate travel backpack" status for me (and to be fair, nothing else has so far), but it's a good bag. At 19" in length and a decent weight, it isn't too bulky or heavy. I was able to comfortably fit two shirts, two pairs of shorts, (leisure trip in the middle of summer) and two pairs of socks and underwear in compression bags, along with a 3-1-1 bag and Dopp kit and a small bag with chargers and headphones. I packed a Microsoft Surface Pro and an iPad Pro 9.7 inch tablet. Pros: Good combination of size and weight. Opens like a suitcase making for easier packing of clothes and toiletries. Side handle in addition to backpack straps. Comfortable backpack straps. Good sized side water bottle holder. (In other words, it will accommodate a decent sized water bottle, not just the smaller ones) Trolley strap for attaching to a rolling bag. Spacious rear laptop compartment (up to about a 15" laptop, but, really, who carries a 17-inch laptop anymore, anyway?) Cons: No expandable gusset. No shoulder strap. Laptop compartment is SO padded that it reduces overall packable space. The front pockets aren't deep enough for real organization, but if not overpacking the interior, with strategic packing, smaller items can be packed in these pockets. No waist strap, which could be a factor for persons of smaller stature. This bag holds a lot, and the temptation to overpack is large. Summary, I expect this bag to hold up, and it's a great "one bag" pack for short trips. And Samsonite quality is always a plus.
Purchased 2 months ago, have roadtripped and flown 6 flights so far with it. Great bag. Love the over suitcase strap, great to use as personal item without needing to put on my back. Fits clothing, electronics, laptop + charger and toiletry/makeup bag for a 4 day trip. The front pockets ARE useful, as pictured, Ive placed my mouse, ipad mini, covid tests, keys, portable charger hair clips and mask in those pockets. Love love love! Ive pictured measurements as well, it fits in the metallic bag sizing at the airport for united, Southwest and American.
Purchased 3 days ago, stitching failed on first fill…as in was just packing, hadn’t even travelled yet, and they don’t accept returns or exchanges.Faulty product and now I’m out of pocket $100In terms of thoughts, size is ok, front pockets are pretty useless cause they only have a slit, not flap so you can’t actually see the organization in the middle front pocket.Suspension for laptop isn’t high enough so be careful setting the bag down.Looks nice.Disregarding quality issues, it give it a 6/10Quality issues considered, getting a firm 1/10
Laptop has no padding on the bottom of bag. Laptop padding otherwise takes up 1/2 the bag and cannot be removed. This bag holds less than bags half it's size because of it. Holds 3 amazon slim cubes. By its dimensions it should be able to easily hold 7, but it's that GIANT padding that was failed to be described in the listing.Really wish companies actually showed and gave details about their luggage, instead of being as vauge as possible. Ebags used to till Samsonite destroyed them. Despite unused, Samsonite will keep $15 for me returning the bag. Wouldn't even be neeed with better descriptions.
