Specification wise, this is a nice 1440p 165hz fast refresh 27” HDR monitor. It is clearly designed for gaming with multiple settings that help you fine tune what you are looking for. Plus, it has 3 buttons specifically for presets. For instance, you have one game where the aim dot can be set dead center and green is better for that setting, while another may be lower off center and you want a red dot with a deeper contrast. Instead of changing the settings individually each time you change things up, just push the button you saved it to. Best setup is with a PC over DisplayPort to get the highest refresh, but HDMI is still pretty decent and can be changed between HDMI 1.4 or 2.0. For some odd reason though, if the Freesync is ‘On’ in the settings, you can’t get HDR to work over HMDI, so be sure to turn that to ‘Off’ if you want 1440p 120hz HDR on your Xbox Series X for example. HDR is better than not having it, but looks a little dull compared to a TV. Something else that threw me off is that there is a volume option while using the joystick for settings. There looks to be a place for speakers, but come to find out those are just ventilation. The volume is for the 3.5mm headphone out jack that works with either DP or HDMI. Out of the box, there is a little bit of assembly required, just snapping the base in and attaching two plastic parts. There is plenty of leeway for position with the base to include 90 degree rotation, but only in one direction. Backlighting is from the edge and can be seen in dark scenes or when no input is available, but lighter than some monitors I have seen. There is practically no reflection from the screen but off angle viewing degrades pretty quickly. Overall I like this monitor. The black depth/contrast is something that I got spoiled with on my older OLED screen, but it didn’t have 165hz refresh, so there are compromises. I also feel it is a little bulky for what I have seen capable on laptops these days. If you have devices to take advantage of the higher resolution and refresh rate, it is worth having.

Bottom line: I’ve been using this monitor for the past two weeks and once I got everything set up I have come to really like it. The display is super bright with rich color and respectable contrast. I have it connected via a DP cable to a RTX-3060 and all my games look great. I am using G-sync combined with some custom display settings that I saved in the 3 customizable buttons. This makes it very easy to change my display preferences from FPS to RTS to doing work by simply pressing one of the configurable buttons. The lack of USB-C video support and USB-A connectivity is a downside. The lack of USB-C video support and USB-A connectivity is a downside. I wasn’t impressed with the HDR image quality but using the pre-set gaming settings and tweaking the controls I was able to get the image quality I would expect from a really good monitor. The Samsung Odyssey G5 is an IPS display with QHD 2560x1440 resolution at a 165 hz refresh rate that supports Free Sync and G-Sync with a quick 1ms GtG response time. I found the display to be very bright on the default settings – almost too bright for non-gaming apps. The colors are vivid and bright without being over saturated. I was pleasantly surprised how dark the black areas were and how the display handled bright to dark differentiation. The only negative and it was a small one is that there was a very slight redish/yellowish cast to any white screens such as using Word. I found I could eliminate this by adjusting the color tone. The monitor supports HDR-10 but when you turn on HDR you have two options HDR Standard or HDR Dynamic and you lose the preset picture options for gaming. With HDR off you can choose FPS, RTS, RPG, AOS, sRGB, Cinema and Dynamic Contrast from the preset picture options. Personally I found that I liked the ability to select from presets vs the image quality provided by the HDR setting. There are three buttons that you can customize for Game/Picture settings and this definitely saves time when going between types of games or work apps. I ran the monitor through multiple tests to verify that there weren’t any bad pixels, to check for color and brightness uniformity and verify the 165 hz refresh rate. The monitor performed well and I didn’t have any noticeable backlight bleed or dead pixels. With G-Sync enabled at QHD resolution and 165 hz refresh rate everything looked clear and ran smoothly. I used my RTX-3060 GPU via the display port for the testing. Note that this monitor only supports a refresh rate of 144 hz when using the HDMI port. This monitor does not support USB-C video nor does it have USB-A ports for connecting USB devices. Setup: Most monitors these days attach to the stands in a toolless method so I was surprised that this one required a Phillips head screw driver. Once attached to the stand you can adjust the monitor for your desired height and angle. The stand legs are somewhat large and the monitor is a bit floppy but once you get it set it holds the position. On the bottom center of the monitor there is a joy stick control that you use to access the input source, the main menu, the power and the eye control. The joy stick control is easy to reach and use even when the monitor is in its lowest position. There are also 3 buttons next to the joy stick for custom game or picture settings. The power, HDMI, DP, USB Service port and headphone jack are on the back facing downward so connecting cables and accessing the ports can be difficult to reach. I updated the monitor’s firmware following the Samsung documentation using a USB drive. I downloaded the firmware onto a USB drive, plugged the drive in the monitor and then selected Update from the menu. The monitor then updated its firmware without issue.

Being an IPS-panel, the viewing angles and color accuracy are excellent with 99% of sRGB covered. At 165hz you are playing games faster than you can on any console or TV (provided your hardware can push that speed). I enjoyed playing several rounds of Fortnite at High settings on this monitor with a 12th gen Intel i7 and RTX 3060 spec’d laptop. I even got a Victory Royale on a few of those rounds! Easily was getting right at 150-165fps. 1440p is monitors are great for gaming because I think Full HD (1080p) is a bit too soft on anything larger than a laptop screen and 4K is just too demanding on your hardware for not much improvement over 1440p. The HDR characteristics are pretty good despite this monitor not being able to get that bright. You can tell the difference when you turn on the HDR features, certain reds are more saturated, and you can easily see more details in dark areas such as those with shadows. Games that support HDR like Forza Horizons 5 and Halo Infinite look better than ever! HDR on the Windows desktop seems to work fine unlike some other Samsung monitors I have used in the past where anything SDR looks washed out with HDR enabled. The stand is more than adequate and supports tilt, swivel, pivot, and height. I really like how high the monitor can go as I can get it right to my eye level for gaming. If I want to code I can pivot the monitor to a portrait view. No complaints at all on the stand. The monitor does have VESA mount support which I’m not using as the stand is fine but want to mention as I have owned some Samsung monitors in the past that were not mountable. There are not too many inputs, just a single HDMI and DisplayPort. It would be nice if it had a built-in USB hub like some of my other Samsung monitors have but I suppose that’s reserved for some of the higher end G7 models I suppose. Pros: IPS 165hz Panel with QHD 2560x1440 resolution VRR (Freesync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible) Low Input Lag (1ms grey to grey) Wide Viewing Angles Good HDR-10 Support Flexible Adjustments 99% sRGB coverage VESA Mount support Cons: Not the deepest of blacks No USB or USB-C Hub Not G-Sync Ultimate (1000 nit HDR) Overall – I really like this monitor and recommend it to anyone whose looking for fast high-resolution quality gaming monitor!

Features not tested:or only limitedly - SamsungDex and the web apps for Microsoft. I have O365 on my MacBook. However, in my opinion, you need to seriously know the limitations that I encountered that could affect your use and expectations. The biggest fault is poor/missing/inaccurate documentation and a support team equipped to answer straight forward questions. (See below for my customer support / sales support exchange in attempting to use this monitor for which I purchased it — video calls with zoom and Messenger. Ultimately, having to connect the camera to my MacBook and the MacBook to the monitor via hdmi. These are my findings. If there are ways around these short comings, I was unable to find Google articles or support documents - either missing or failed worked to make them work. ——1) I think the smart features are A) missing important apps that most customers would need: Facebook, Messenger, and Zoom (note you can access via the internet browser but the browser will not allow access to a webcam!) B) half-baked, poorly documented and customer sales support is woefully uninformed a) I tried to follow the instructions to setup a Google Meet, but every set of instructions I followed did not allow me to setup a new Google Meet account on my iPhone and/or iPad.. This would likely be a call to support, but it is not Google Meet I really want to use. Everyone I am meeting with uses Zoom or Messenger Video Calls. B) The mobility app refuses to allow me to fully connect from my iPhone and iPad. They are all on the same Wi-Fi network but they fail to display the screens. I had to purchase screen mirroring apps to display my iPhone and iPad screens on the monitor wirelessly or use a hdmi cable. C) No way to download apps via an App Store Video WebCam Experience: I knew from reading Amazon q&a that the camera wasn’t included, but I waited until I received and setup the monitor before selecting one. Also note that in all of the manuals there is nothing that mentions which cameras are supported and which are not. Nor does it mention that there are only 2 ways / apps that even use the camera. Upon receiving my webcam, I plugged it in and couldn’t get it to recognize that I plugged it in and selected the connect a device - web camera. It instead displayed a message “connect a supported web camera…and listed several Logitech 9xx & StreamCam models and 2 Samsung models. And referred to a document on the web that listed supported cameras. The instructions on the monitor are not current and point you to missing documentation on the web. I called support to see what I must be misunderstanding. The support agent that answered is the only person from whom I received any real support. She confirmed it was missing and said that this isn’t a support call but customer sales support, gave me the number to call. Ultimately, I ended up returning my camera because I could not get anyone to confirm whether it was supported or not…after 2 hours of being passed from one team to another 5 in all and the last one was to pass me to the correct team…15 minutes later my call was dropped. After ordering and receiving the Logitech StreamCam, I tried to connect and use the supported Webcam, but I got the same screen instructing me to plug it etc. But this time, I decided to try differently. I went further and discovered I could get it to activate if I wanted to see myself alongside a video ie exercise see&do. This established the webcam is recognized and works under this scenario. But not very helpful for video calling. Ultimately to use webcam for Zoom or Messenger I had to connect it to my MacBook Pro and the MacBook Pro to the monitor. It limits where and how I use this feature.

Fast display with some trade offs
13 May 2022

The Samsung Odyssey G5 is a solid gaming and productivity monitor featuring HDR, up to 165Hz refresh rates and G-Sync and FreeSync compatibility all in a very solid 2560x1440p resolution which is not only a sweet spot for midrange gaming cards, but also excellent for work and productivity. At initial glance, the G5 is a bright and attractive display with thin bezels and a matte screen finish. Samsung’s Odyssey lineup of PC monitors is very popular among gamers for all the features they pack into the display. I was a little disappointed however in some of the implementation on this monitor. 1. The HDR on this monitor changes the bit depth from 8-bit to 8-bit with dithering, meaning some of the colors are extrapolated due to bandwidth and signaling limitations. This largely negates the benefits of HDR as you’re going to get more washed out, less accurate colors and less crisp text and graphical edges. 2. G-Sync is only supported on the Display Port input, the HDMI port does not enable G-Sync. Not a huge deal, use this port for your work laptop, but something to be aware of. 3. The HDMI port drops refresh rate to 144Hz instead of the 165Hz on the DP input. Again not a huge deal just something to be aware of. The monitor does not have any USB inputs or the ability to connect to your PC for USB, it has one input but that appears to be for system service. Also, there are no speakers however you can pass audio over HDMI and plug in a set of headphones using 3.5mm mini Jack. Again this is a bit of a trade off since you lose G-Sync and drop refresh rate down to 144Hz over HDMI. Overall this is a solid gaming monitor and also a pretty great work monitor as well. Are there better gaming displays out there? Certainly but you will end up paying more too, so this monitor when on sale is a nice balance of performance and features.

Great for Gamers, Not for Everyone

The primary benefits of this monitor are its excellent refresh rate and rapid response time. If you're a PC gamer and absolutely insist on stellar, smooth gameplay with no tearing, this is definitely an option to consider. The monitor is also FreeSync and G-SYNC compatible. Input delays or lag are imperceptible, or basically non-existent. For business or other users, however, you might get more value out of a different monitor choice that doesn't emphasize gaming-specifoc features as much. Build Quality: The monitor itself is well constructed, but the stand and plastic ring assembly is a little weak. This thing will wobble, so make sure you intend to keep it largely stationary if you're interested in buying it. The included stand does permit screen rotation, though, so if you like vertically scrolling shooters, you'll love the setup. Ports: Only one HDMI port and a DP port. The DP port is 1.2, which is fine for the price point. Still, I really wish two HDMI ports had been standard. Screen Quality: Excellent brightness and minimal black bleeding. Colors are uniform across the display and edges and viewing angles are decent. There's a anti-reflective layer attached that helps with reflections in bright environments, and it doesn't seem to impair text quality or legibility. Colors seem a bit cold, though, and require some tweaking from factory defaults. Users can adjust color accuracy in the monitor settings, which given the bluish tint to whites you may want to during initial setup. All in all, above average, but not best in class. Screen Responsiveness: This is where the monitor really shines. It can handle anything you throw at it, be it current gen consoles or really demanding PC games. Images remain consistently smooth and responsive regardless of source, so if you're a gamer, you should check this monitor out. Overall: Since the real selling point of this monitor is the refresh rate and responsiveness, this monitor is really aimed squarely at gamers. You can get better color accuracy and displays from similarly priced monitors that don't boast a max refresh rate of 144 Hz, so if what you looking for is something for business or video editing, look elsewhere. Gamers, however, especially those who prioritize responsiveness and refresh rate, won't be disappointed (except for perhaps there being only one HDMI port).

I do not notice any tearing or ghosting in the games i play (Fortnite, Apex, Valorant, Cyberpunk 2077, Borderlands, etc.). Viewing angles are pretty good as this is an IPS panel, and the colors are quite good as well for a gaming monitor (though not as color accurate as my Asus ProArt). The monitor itself has A LOT of settings for gaming and does not disappoint. I primarily play FPS games, so I usually have the crosshair on, and it's a pretty sweet addition! To get the most out of this panel, make sure you use a DisplayPort cable, so you can get all that buttery goodness. The stand that comes with the monitor is decently stable and allows for tilt and portrait rotation (only in the clockwise direction, unfortunately). I personally mounted my G5 on a 100x100 VESA monitor arm though as I like to have my desk space clear & tidy! If there are things I could've wished for, it would have been for: - USB Type C connectivity, so I could easily pair outside my desktop with my laptops - brighter display panel for better HDR (though this is rated as HDR10, it is only decent at best compared to my other HDR10 panels) Overall for the money, you are getting quite a feature packed gaming monitor. I would highly recommend this monitor for any gamer, especially if it is on sale!

Outstanding Monitor

Right out of the box, this monitor looks fantastic. I have been using computer monitors since the early '80s spanning many brands, form factors, panel types, resolutions, intended use cases, etc. The Samsung Odyssey G5 (S27AG500PN) stands out as one of the best display options that I have experienced, especially if you have an interest in gaming. The Odyssey G5 sports a laundry list of premium features including HDR support, 2560x1440 resolution, Nvidia G-SYNC, AMD FreeSync, 1-millisecond response time, DisplayPort 1.2 support, as well as 165/144hz refresh rate (DisplayPort/HDMI). This is an excellent monitor for those searching for premium performance from an accessible price point. This is an excellent monitor for those searching for premium performance from an accessible price point. Regarding the performance of the monitor, I have tested it in three circumstances: gaming, media-viewing, and productivity. On the gaming front, I was impressed. The monitor provides a crisp display and vibrant colors while maintaining a lightning-fast response time and framerate, provided you have the hardware required to drive games at this resolution and framerate. From first person shooters to strategy games to rhythm games, the speedy performance of this monitor is outstanding. I experienced no input lag at any point, including gaming with a controller. However, one minor issue presented itself: the contrast and light-balance of the panel. Given the fact that this is an IPS panel, it is understandable that it would not be capable of producing the insane contrast provided by the likes of OLED/QLED panels, but I found that the black-balance and viewing angles of the monitor left a little to be desired. On this point, I would recommend against using this monitor if you consistently have sunlight shining directly on your setup, as it does succumb to some glare in the presence of exceedingly bright light. However, for myself, and I’m assuming many others, this does not pose much of a downside. Regarding media-viewing, the minor image-quality issues outlined above persist, however, I feel that it is worth noting that this criticism only holds up when comparing the monitor to OLED/QLED panels. Speaking strictly in terms of IPS panel performance, this monitor offers a very pleasing image; and if all this talk of OLEDs, QLEDs, light balancing, and panels sounds confusing, you likely won’t take any issue with the monitor whatsoever. Getting back to the performance, I was impressed with the vibrance and clarity of the image, especially when viewing HDR supported content. On the topic of productivity, I found that the Eye-Saver mode made for a much more comfortable user experience in the realm of bright, white, high-contrast user interfaces often found in business applications such as the Office 365 Suite. Regarding the physical attributes of the monitor, the stand provides a sturdy stature and a small footprint while allowing for a range of ergonomic adjustments in height, tilt, and rotation. Additionally, the stand includes a small strap near the base which helps quite a bit with cable management. Visually speaking, the monitor gently straddles the line between ‘professional monitor’ and ‘premium gaming apparatus.’ There are no RGB accent lighting features, but the small Nvidia G-SYNC insignia as well as the finishing pattern on the rear of the monitor subtly indicate the horsepower hiding under the hood. Overall, I believe that this is an outstanding monitor and provides excellent performance in gaming, media-viewing, and productivity. I would recommend the Odyssey G5 to anyone looking for a premium performance package.

Solid gaming and general use display
10 May 2022

I’ll begin with the pros. I like the styling, build quality and gaming performance of this Samsung G5 monitor. The pros include solid constructed and ease of use features that include a wide screen that slides vertically on the stand, swivels right to left and rotates 90-degrees. It also has built-in cable management, intuitive controls, and a small desktop footprint for the base. Gaming performance is good with snappy fast response and no noticeable ghosting or lag. Fast paced racing games like Forza Horizon 5 have smooth, clean, fluid motion when played through my G-SYNC enabled Nvidia RTX card. Even when driving past scenery at over 300 mph in Forza H5, textures and graphics render quick and cleanly. Desktop performance is equally well with no lag whatsoever when ... MoreI’ll begin with the pros. I like the styling, build quality and gaming performance of this Samsung G5 monitor. Even when driving past scenery at over 300 mph in Forza H5, textures and graphics render quick and cleanly. Desktop performance is equally well with no lag whatsoever when opening, minimizing or maximizing files and windows. Spreadsheets and documents have good sharpness with no jaggies on the edges. Gaming and desktop performance are nicely balanced for mixed use systems. The matte screen is excellent for avoiding harsh reflections and glare from nearby users, windows, and bright light sources. Color and brightness seemed a little lacking out of the box but I was able to quickly adjust the display to a satisfying level without using a screen calibration tool. A panel that started out somewhat dim with washed out colors now has good brightness, popping colors and rich saturation. HDR looks good when enabled and although it does improve graphical quality of most games, it is not quite as stunning a difference as my primary gaming monitor. The G5’s viewing angles are also somewhat shallow which results in a shimmering effect with even slight shifts off center. The effect is more noticeable in darker gaming environments. There is also noticeable light bleed along the lower left side of the screen. Like the shimmering effect, the light bleed is most noticeable on dark backgrounds and in darker environments. This display utilizes a proprietary power cord and brick that is far less convenient than the universally swappable standard three prong monitor power cord. If a pet chews this cord or some other mishap strikes, get ready to shell out bucks for another cord and power brick versus grabbing a spare 3-prong off an old monitor or desktop PC or for a few bucks online. Overall, the G5 is a decent gaming and desktop monitor. It has good brightness and saturation, albeit after some fine tuning. Gaming and desktop performance are also both quite good. The screen orientation and position can be adjusted in just about any manner desired and the controls are actually asy to use, which isn’t typically the case with monitors. On the downside, he G5 does have some noticeable light bleed, narrow viewing angles, and a proprietary power cord. It’s not perfect but still pretty good. Solid four out of five.

Super Smooth and Bright 2k Gamin’

The Samsung - Odyssey G5 27" IPS 1ms QHD is a great mid-level Gaming Monitor with AMD FreeSync & NVidia G-Sync Compatibility and HDR10. It has a higher 2K resolution than your typical 1080p FHD monitors, so the images are that much crisper with twice the pixels covering the same area. This makes it an excellent choice for both gaming and productivity as the text looks really sharp on the G5. The only drawback running at higher resolutions is that everything will be smaller, so if you are vision challenged, you may have to run it at a lower resolution or use a higher than 100% zoom in your applications. I have gotten so used to my dual Samsung 27” 1080p curved monitors setup that when I tested this Odyssey G5 2K monitor it’s almost as if I just put on a new pair of squeaky clean reading glasses. As for its intended gaming purpose, this G50A shines. With its 1ms Gray-to-gray response time, and super fast 165Hz refresh rate, it’s great for my driving games. The G-Sync compatibility with my gaming laptop’s RTX3050Ti makes a huge difference as well. Sometimes if there is any screen refresh delay, ghosting or out of sync frames, it could cause people the equivalent of “motion sickness”. That hasn’t happened with this Odyssey G5. Additionally, much like other Samsung displays, the colors are vibrant, contrast and brightness are high and there are plenty of preset and custom adjustments you can pick from. Moreover there are 3 buttons on the front bottom for game modes 1, 2, 3 that provide quick access to different color, contrast and brightness setups. Last but not least, the Odyssey G5 has Height Adjustment in addition to standard Swivel, Tilt and Pivot options and if you need to mount it on a wall or multi monitor arm, it also has the standard 100mm VESA mounting capability. All in all, I would recommend this to the casual part-time gamer, especially if you buy when it’s on-sale.
